Custom M249 boxmag written by 'The Gear Guys'- Wednesday, February 6, 2002

The Gear Guys, wanted to let everyone know that they are onto version 6 of their SAW box mags: - Arnie

I just made 2 for friends of mine and they seem to be very good during skirmishes.

An important NOTE - there are two types of SAW boxes I have seen recently. The version with the fins on the front has a much smaller internal width and will NOT fit hicap magazines as far as I have been able to ascertain. If you are using a custom loading system these still may be useful but if you are building a box mag similar to mine then I would recommend inquiring carefully before purchasing a "SAW box for your project.

I have attached a picture of my SAW box mag version 6 and the following comments:

1. You can see how much better the gun and box mag look with the dummy .223 round in place. Make certain you change the screw on the feeding tray cover to the long one supplied by TOP. The short one that comes stock allows the .223s to fall out.

2. Its important to have the feeding tube see through - a solid tube would not allow the gunner to differentiate between a barrel jam (BBs in the tube but not feeding into the gun) and a BB loading failure or empty magazine etc. (Notice I have removed the door that is used to hold in the M16 magazines.

3. The Dummy .223s also serve to keep the 2500 plus BBs from coming out of the box.

4. Note the box mag trigger - I experimented with having the box mag drive the BBs only when the gunner is shooting but this system was unsatisfactory. There were many occasions when I wanted to have the hicap at max tension - I therefore opted for an eternal trigger. You can still get of 15 to 20 seconds of BBs before you have to use the box mag loading trigger but the SAW shoots very quickly - I can empty the whole box in under 3 min. While holding the fore grip you just activate the trigger with you pinky or other finger.

5. Top view looking down into the mag - very difficult to get the hicap to seal, as it needs to float in the box to avoid twisting and jamming its internal system.

6. As you can see form this shot - I have installed rechargeable 1500mah batteries and have a charging plug tucked inside the box so you only have to open the door to charge. I get at least 3 times as much charge out of the box mag vs the SAW guns battery. The foam seals the BBs from falling once the box mag door is reattached.

If people are interested I may start to build these box mag but I have the following information that people should know:

These are had made devices that are made by an unprofessional. They may break at any time - mine has not - but since it is a homemade device I can offer no guarantee. I can offer no refunds. If you want one that badly that you are willing to agree to the above warning I may be able to build you one.
