Slow Methodicals Airsoft Team (SMAT)

Remeo Incolumis Universi

"Everyone goes home safely"

We ain't SWAT, but we're just as hot - just slower and more reliable!

Left to right:
Roger, Dan, and Lou,
immediately after a camouflage lesson!

The Slow Methodicals Airsoft Team was an Airsoft team based in the south east area of London and the surrounding areas.

The inagural gathering was held at Ambush Wargames at Chobham, on the 16th November 2003. Since then, we tried to game at least one every month (this didn't always happen - the real wold tended to get in the way at times, lol). The team finally dissolved for work and personal reasons two years after its' inception, in 2006.

Rationalé

There's far too much stress in the world today, and it's driving us to early graves. So, the rationale of the team was that the more we could do to relieve the stress, the better our health might get (no promises, ok? I'm not a bleedin' Doctor!). So, why not do something we can enjoy, while loosing a few pounds (in both meanings of the word!) at the same time?

The original intention was for it to comprise as a team of us more 'mature' people (like, unfit folks with beer guts, who want a bit of fun!), so that we can not only poke fun at ourselves, but have a little fun at the same time (at other peoples' expense, this time). This has changed a little after the first year, with interest generated from a few younger people (in their late teens and early twenties, would you believe?!), but the idea was still pretty much that it's a team for the 'older and wiser' in the Airsoft game! Over time, the older of us may even have lost a lttle of the flab we gathered in the years, and become a bit fitter as well, while having fun (OK, anything was possible)!

Our primarly 'mission', if you can call it that, was to train ourselves to be a credible recconnaissance team for the SWAT Big Game in 2004. As such, there was a training plan in effect, and we all agreed to do our best to learn the art of 'Recce', whilst, of course, still having fun!

Yup. FUN. Capital "F", capital "U", capital "N".

Airsoft is about safely enjoying yourself, safely, having a great day out, enjoying your third childhood, and having a beer or three (OK, ten!) in the pub afterwards (so much for loosing that weight!) with your mates, and the folks you shot in the games during the day (OK, the guys who shot you. Don't get all sassy, you young pup)!

Oh, yeah - getting into a game that your kids might enjoy is all the better - it may even let you talk to them as equals (we ALL know that most of 'em think we're lower life forms, only good for pocket money!) in confusion!

Membership

Membership was open to, well, anyone of the thirty-plus bracket, who may (or may not) have needed a belly wheel to get around! Some of you younger types that might have wanted to join, would have been informed that while we older fogies might not have been ageist, the younger members of the team may well have been required to fetch our walking sticks every so often!

The badge...

By the way, the badge (the image at the top of this page) design philosophy, for those that are interested, was as follows: The cap badge is a blend of ideas; it uses a modified 'Hunters Star', surmounted with the team name, and a pair of crossed SA-80 bayonets, signifying our comitment to keeping as close as possible to proper military tactics in the Airsoft game as possible. Much more professional... and a damn sight easier to reproduce as a cap badge than the previous UN-insired version was!
