Girls only? No wai!
Time to blow the dust off the old blog...
It's been brought to my attention that ASCUK has a girls only forum called 'The Bird's Nest', and that it might be an idea to bring it over here. Personally, I don't think this is a good idea.
There have been plenty of previous threads posted in general and newbie discussion asking such questions as "I'm female, wil camo/ tactical gear fit me?" or "I'm a girl, what gun should I get?" They've been answered time and again along the lines of:
- They make BDUs for children, of course you'll get some to fit.
- Try different tactical gear on and see what fits, it's not difficult.
- Go to an airsoft shop and buy whichever gun you like that you can comfortably use.
I don't know what the female population of ASCUK was like in terms of size, but on here we only have about five or six female members who regularly post. We've never really been anything of a cohesive unit, either; I doubt having our own forum would change that. If I wanted to ask them a female airsoft related question, I have a few of them on msn, so personally I wouldn't find having a forum useful.
While I can see a reason to offer seperate forums for discussion of CQB, woodland, sniping etc., I don't see how gender is a good reason for seperating us from the rest of the forum population. My vagina does not dictate my tactics.
R22master raised a very valid point about the password, so I shall copy it wholesale:
Firstly, passwords would have to be given to all the female members - How on earth would we figure out who was who? Any blokes masquerading as girls just to get the password would likely end up ruining the concept, detroying trust, and have most of the females label them as some kind of sex-pest.
And if it wasn't passworded, there would be many adolescent blokes who would think it was some kind of "target rich environment" and just end up pestering the girls.
Call me overly brash, but if I felt like starting a thread to ask the opinion of the other female members of the forum then I'd have no problem posting it in General discussion or whatever forum is most appropriate. If it was really necessary I'd put a stipulation in the first post along the lines of "please keep everything relevant, and if you're a guy only post if it's really, really necessary".
If there's a sudden influx of 20 or so new female members who all want to have their girls only forum back, fair enough. But I still see no valid reason for having one, and can't really think of anything worthwhile that could get posted there that can't be posted elsewhere. As far as I've been told, it was a girl that asked for it, so it's not quite sexist but I would really have issues if I had basically been told "you go and play in the girly forum now..."
Thoughts, anyone?
