  1. Sid i hope this will be to your liking

marine combat sniper out of iraq

That's the closest thing I've seen yet.

Is that actually 2 colours or is it just faded?

It also looks suspiciously like the "pattern" was caused by wrapping a bit of scrim rag around it while the paint was still wet and then removing it.

If that is two distinct colours then it's the first gun I've ever seen which is painted that way.

    Nice one. :)

  2. I'm not entirely sure you picked the best rifle to demonstrate the Artsy fartsy side of airsoft gun painting. the owner of that rifle just took some od and striped the gun, what's so weird about that.

    This

    That's a bit better example, I'd say.

    Haha! LMAO. I concur.

In fact, if it'll allow me, I'm gonna add that into my first post. :D

  3. Hold on Sid...the real-steel guys do it...check the link to my friends below, just remember, the secret to this is El-Cheepo spray paint, like Krylon, and when it gets banged/dragged/smacked around good, the paint chips and flakes off, and does an even better job of breaking up shape and shadow, although some can shine through...keep the spray can handy for touchups

Painting a showcase rifle in cammo isn't really what I'm talking about.

I'm talking about pic's os soldiers doing soldier-stuff using lovingly painted guns. ;)

  4. Nice and simple.

Somebody, one of you guys who haunts militaryphotos.net maybe, show me pics of real steel guns with fancy, artistic cammo patterns sprayed on them.

A lot of people seem to be fanatical about accurate detailing of their kit and then go and paint some fancy desert camo pattern on their gun which, in my experience is totally unrealistic.

See the attached pics for examples.

The first two pics show typical "arty-farty" airsoft guns yesterday.

The two other pictures show hard-as-nails real-steel guns. The latter gun was probably done with what was left in a can of tan emulsion which had been used to paint a tank in desert colours.

Not a big deal I guess. Paint your gun pink for all I care but I just wonder where the idea of cammo-painted guns comes from. I've never seen one.

  5. I was just looking at this. I put my "pin" in ages ago but it seems to have vanished. I tried to redo it but it doesn't show up.

I click MEMBER MAP, then MANAGE MY PIN, then just click the UK map on my location.

No pin appears then OR afterwards, when I click DONE. Am I doing summat wrong?

    [edit]

Using Win XP Pro and IE6, as installed with SP2.

  6. To digress slightly, I've noticed that whenever I give a -ve rep, a bunch of the persons mates will rally round and give the person +ve ones to make up for what big bad Sid said.

If we're gonna have a rep system then it needs to be policed. Abuse of it is againt the forum rules. Giving +ve reps for no reason is abuse of the system.

Frankly, I'd start walloping people with reductions of post count or summat as a penalty.

It occurs to me that the ability to post in certain forums, the for-sale forums for example could be suspended for a set period as a punishment as well.

This forum is filling up with idiots who have no concept of responsibility and, while it's good to promote a friendly community, it's getting to the point where morons think they can post rubbish, insult other users and generally treat these forums with no respect with impunity.

You guys need to start laying the smackdown on idiots in some way that they'll actually take notice of.

Use of warning points, post count reductions and suspension of ability to post are the best methods that come to mind right now.

  7. Is there any way to condense the discussion about UTG guns?

Maybe give them a sub-forum or a few stickies such as "My new gun" and "Problems with"?

Aside from that, it might be worth pointing out to the people who sign up to talk about them that this is a British web-site and UTG guns aren't sold over here which kinda limits the possibility of any brit being able to lend any assistance.

  8. But you can't print out Arnie's news page and half the forums to read on the bog, can you?

Beaten to the punch by Havoc again!

Alas, this IS probably the single biggest attraction of AI. The only other thing it's good for is that some of the ad's provide you with new websites to nose around.

All that happens with the editorial is that you read it and use it for form a basis of opinion about the writers. Once you've done that all you do is either agree with or dismiss what they write.

For example, I got the impression that the guy doing the gun reviews was pretty switched-on and very methodical. I read through the gun reviews just to see if the guy was gonna say anything to make me think he was a wally. There was nothing in any of the reviews that actually suprised or informed me. Well, except why they seemed to like G&G guns so much even when they don't work.

On the other hand, I got the impression that the guy doing the site reviews was a bit pretentious and a poser. Consequentially, I kinda took most of what was written with a pinch of salt.

I guess I'm an idiot if it was the same guy but I call em as I see em.

I can see the point of using a magazine to attempt to attract new players but, BTH, I think the whole genre has missed the boat. In 10 years the only magazines left will be newspapers and jazz-mags.

I'll buy a copy of AI whenever I get the chance but I'll ALWAYS log on to Arnies to find out what's going on.

  9. Quick Question: Can the L85 use afetrmarket Pistons, like say a Deep Fire Titanium?

I own 2 FAMAS already and am about to get an L85 for the sake of Modding it up.

I have an Xtra FAMAS laying about to use for the Hopup & barell.

Why is it said, that L85 Piston is so rare and not to damage it?

What you've got there is, quite simply, duff information given to me at the time when I bought the gun.

I was told that the Academy L85 used a piston with a single guide-slot in it.

I dunno if this was true of the early, none hop-up versions of the L85 but I can say that mine definately DOES have a normal marui-compatible piston in it.

When I first got the gun I did baby it, running it on 7.2v and not even thinking about fitting a stronger spring. All this was because I figured that if the piston got damaged the gun would be junk. As soon as I realised that the piston was replaceable using a Marui one (as are all the other parts) I got the spanners out.

TBH, there's not that much you can make use of out of a FAMAS.

The Academy gearbox is good enough for it not to be worth swapping for the marui one. It's also fitted with metal bushes AND the electrical connections are in different places which is gonna make using the FAMAS gearbox a PITA.

I never tried using a FAMAS hop-up seeing as how I didn't have a FAMAS around to use.

The Academy mags have a slightly longer feed nozzle on the top of them. Also, the feed tube on the Academy hop-up is slightly longer than most marui ones.

If you adapt the L85 to use Marui M16 mags you'll be OK (just about) so long as you keep using the Academy hop-up.

If you swap the Academy Hop-up for a Marui one you'll be OK (again, just about) so long as you keep using the awful plastic Academy mags.

If, however, you adapt the gun to use Marui mags AND replace the hop-up you'll find that there's a tiny gap between the top of the mag and the bottom of the feed tube.

    Oh dear.

It's not the end of the world though. If you're brave you can lop a bit off the bottom of the Academy hop-up and glue it to the bottom of the Marui one to extend it.

This, of course, is a "######-or-bust" activity. If it doesn't work then you've also ruined the Academy hop-up.

I fitted a Systema hop-up and then glued a lump of tube to the bottom of it to extend it. It feeds fine but I think it has problems with the air-nozzle not sealing so I've currently got the standard Academy hop-up back in place. I yanked out the rather dodgy Academy barrel and replaced it with a 6.04mm Marui compatible one. (Fitted back to front. The Academy hop-up requires this).

Finally, Marui barrels are actually slightly smaller diameter than the Academy one. This mean that you'll need to wrap tape around the Marui barrel to make it a snug fit in the various Academy barrel supports and clamps.

All in all, mine is now easily as good as a stock Marui AEG. All in all it's cost me less than £100 on top of the purchase price of £100 so it's actually been very cost effective too.

If you were on a budget you just need to fit the EG560 motor, 1J spring, spring guide and re-shim the gearbox to get somewhere near done.

I've spent a bit more, though, fitting a metal G36 outer barrel and buying an RDS and using the guts out of it to make the SUSAT work reasonably well.

  10. Just to add my appreciation for that M11. It's one of the only guns I've seen that is truly worthy of being called "custom".

Totally different league to people who consider adding a PEQ2 box and a desert cammo paint job as "custom".

  11. One of the guys I know of on the prop forums takes the replica motion trackers and puts real motion tracking circuits inside them.

    Quite cool.

    You wanting one??

Erm, by "real MT circuitry" I assume you mean he's fitting GameBoy Advance screens with software that makes it go "beep", right?

I mean, it doesn't use micro changes in air density to detect movement on the other side of walls, right?

  12. Here's a few pictures of my SA80.

It's an Academy L85A1 which has had one or two modifications throughout its life.

Internally, it's still using an Academy gearbox. It's had CA gears and piston fitted along with the spring out of my Marui SG1 and a Systema bearing spring guide. The motor has been swapped for a genuine Marui EG560.

    There's a Systema Hop-up and a 6.04mm TN barrel too.

It shoots at about 300fps and it's accurate as hell. It's better than most Marui guns.

Externally, well, I'll leave you guys to see if you can spot the changes for yourselves. ;)
