  1. The general concensus is that the Ares/Umarex G36 has great externals, with more realistic construction and takedown than all other makes of G36 AEGs, but the internals are below average. Personally I've been interested in getting a G36 for a long time now, and I'd certainly get the Umarex because quick and easy takedown is important to me. I'd just give the internals a good seeing-to out of the box (which I do with all AEGs anyway, even the internally excellent VFC XCR didn't meet my demands and had parts adjusted or replaced before being used). In my eyes, using a completely stock, unop
  2. What they told you is rubbish. An M120 spring is not a heavy spring, and if the setup was otherwise done correctly, with regards to shimming, motor height and so on, the gears should last forever. If anything should break with too high speed plus too strong a spring, it's the piston, maybe the motor would burn out first. Combining a speed motor with torque gears is fine for reaching a decent ROF with a mid-level spring, which is what an M120 is. The G&P gears were just weak.
  3. I've filed the hop arm a bit, and after twisting the barrel back and forth a bit, the hop bump now appears straight. Could be a VFC issue, but I've seen it in other hop-ups before, caused by uneven casting of the hop arm, creating a step down the middle of the nub tray, so one side is higher than the other. The VFC seemed completely flat and straight, though, so I'm not really sure what caused the problem exactly. I guess the arm itself doesn't sit straight in the hop unit.
  4. I recently bought an Echo1 XCR, here are my thoughts. Note: this is not intended as a full review, as there are plenty of excellent reviews already available, with plenty of detailed descriptions and pictures. What I want to provide is a supplement with info not found in the other reviews. Externals: The fit and finish is just amazing, with tolerances I have not seen in an airsoft gun before. The folding stock is 100% solid, not the slightest trace of movement when extended. The only unwanted movement to be found externally is a slight wobble in the charging handle assembly, a
  5. Of course not. As I like to do a lot of mechbox maintenance on my AEGs, I strongly prefer models with quick & easy mechbox access, such as the CA SA58, VFC-type AKs, and the JLS RX4. The G&G 552 seemed like just my kind of gun, but the fiddly grip removal and selector bits really turn me off. The thought of having to suffer through that stuff every time I need to make an adjustment makes me want to hang myself. Also not too happy about the entire rear of the mechbox being exposed when folding the stock. Otherwise, the gun looks absolutely smashing, which is why I've be
  6. Good review, very thorough. I was very interested in this particular model, but now I'll definitely give it a pass. I never suspected it wouldn't have a motor cage, being a V3 mechbox and all.
  7. Andyjp posted a useful link in the news thread, not a guide per se, but it tells you all you need to know nonetheless.
  8. What's the takedown procedure to get to the bolt and inner barrel? What type of inner barrel and hop rubber are we dealing with?
  9. Why would you need to replace the barrel in order to use lipos? Or the gears and motor, for that matter? The gun is equipped with a microswitch trigger, so, no.
  10. The hop-up unit is designed for a flat-faced (nozzle-less) hop rubber. Why? I have no bloody idea. Pics would be meaningless, as it looks like a standard 1-piece M4 hop unit on the outside. Inner barrel length before flash hider is ~290mm.
  11. I put a Prometheus non-BU cylinder in mine, fits fine. I still use the stock cylinder head, but it was a very tight fit in the Prommy cylinder. I have no idea why you "upgraded" all those other parts. The stock spring guide is solid steel with bearings, fer chrissakes.

    Ares PPSH

How many BBs can the drum mag feed before needing a rewind? In the videos I've seen, the large button for releasing the upper receiver from the lower seems very light. Would you say it'd be easy to accidentally release the upper receiver during frantic skirmishing or such? Can the blowback be deactivated without modification?
  13. Good review, covers most important areas. Mechbox is nice, a V2 with some of the benefits of a V3: motor cage, external wiring. If the gun is yours to keep, remember to radius the cylinder window corners. Obvious downsides, perhaps, are unique nozzle and hop-up unit.
  14. Watch out for broken barrel lock (that spring loaded flappy part at the base of the outer barrel).
  15. You DID radius those cylinder window corners, right? Also it says on EBB you must only use this in metal receivers.
  16. I'm sorry, but XKCD sucks, lol. But seriously , I think we should listen to Qulevra, he's pretty 1337 and "in the know". Holy christ, serious business. The review is fine. Yeah, you voided the warrenty, but so does any other proper review by going into the internals. You didn't break the gun, you broke a small, flimsy plastic hook. That's not "breaking the gun". What you did what dispel some hype and mysticism. Earlier I compared it to the JLS RX4, but I guess another good comparison would be with a RealSword Type 97. Now there's an extremely solid, well-made plastic bullpup A
  17. Okay I'm convinced, the gun is awesome. *orders* Jesus christ, lol. Qulevra's actually starting to do TSI a disservice by being so fiercely defensive about an overtly substandard product. I find that suspicious.
  18. I did, he seems excited. Utter lack of knowledge/understanding: because this gun is only for experts, I guess? Only get this gun if you designed it yourself, folks. Lack of clear statements: it's a documentation of an excited customer's initial impressions, so of course it's not all scripted and planned. First negative review of a TSI product: yes, shocking, and I'm sure the OP was as shocked as you and everybody else. I'm sure that's why he thought it was important to get it out there quickly. Yes, maybe it's a lemon. Contender for the worst lemon in the history of airsof
  19. What? The OP just seems excited at first, he obviously wanted to be the first one out with a video review of what he expected to be an amazing gun. Yes, he should have checked the CD for instructions, but it's not like it would have prevented the problems. He just used the knife to undo a philips screw, no harm done in that.
  20. Exactly. (below is from the News forum)
  21. Never lube your barrel. It must be bone dry. It reminds me of people at the local skirmish site who try to fix malfunctioning hop-ups or magazines by spraying silicone directly into them. Every time I'm all like er wait what're youNO WAIT DONT *PSSSHHHH* never mind. ~_____~
  22. Yeah it's pretty great eh? Well if you don't like the size, then the Detonics is not for you. Personally I like compact guns a lot, they don't get in the way when crawling around in the muck.
  23. I'm not sure. I've never taken my Detonics down further than basic field stripping, for fear of somehow breaking the magic spell the gun seems to be blessed with. But seriously, they should be the same, I'm not sure what's up with the MEU.
  24. I bought a Marui MEU some time ago. To my disappointment, I find the blowback (regardless of ambient temperature) of the MEU to be rather sluggish, and it also has a tendency to blast a bit of liquid gas on the first couple of shots on a full magazine. Hrmm! I examined the blowback engine parts, nothing seems to be defective. I also tried swapping out the piston head, didn't help. So I ended up just sticking the Detonics upper on the MEU lower. Works great in cool temps that way, but I must say I had expected more from the blowback engine of the MEU.
