The gearbox is plastic but the internals are metal. They're the usual Marui metal however and are far from indestructible. And everything but the cylinder, barrel, and hop rubber are proprietary so replacements are hard to come by.

True, DJ did have the Detonics, in fact that is were half of its fame came from. As for modern and high-tech that should be something like a PX4 or at least something in .45 seeing as all the other guns were (yes the Bren Ten used .45ACP blanks in Miami Vice) .

I'll accept the detonics if you did indeed use it....from an ankle holster. (I was referring as a primary gun).
