  1. I am still here, from the old Airsoftzone days....

I think the issue is that today, airsoft was far more fragmented/differentiated as a community.

In the yesteryear, we had meatgrinder/arena games and then milsim.  Today we have a wide spectrum, and even milsim has different strokes and takes, and even meatgrinders have differentiated between urban arena, and speedsoft/speedqb.

I remember I used to get excited over new models of guns, and arnies used to provide the first news of such developments.  Nowadays we have popularairsoft, and a host of youtube driven reviews, but new products are the same old M4/AK but with just slightly different rails, a mosfet, another PCC etc.  Its not really worth covering.

Gone are the days we get a new BAR, a M240B, an AK5C, Beretta RX4, a Galil etc.  Now, its another PCC, a rifle'rised PP2K, another speedM4 (AEG or MWS variety) with custom rail and a dildo... (Though that moaning WE AKS74UN waifu was so darn cool) .  Buying an expensive gun with lots of useless accessories, or owning a set of NVG is now a badge of honor.

Games aren't getting better, in fact games are getting worse.  Players have trouble listening and taking instructions, or be able to play for more than an hour or two.  Milsim has become more LARP and tactical fashion cosplay that favours those who have money for kit, while conventional gaming has become counterstrike with paintball guns.  Gone are the days where we would raid a base, conduct a fighting patrol at night, and do a dawn attack.

Its all a bit boring now.

  2. I got bored yesterday, watching "White house down", and I thought "Wouldn't it be nice to have an APC9..."

    I present, the "FN APC556 K"

    Features:

    - WE SCAR L  base gun.

    - non-reciprocating charging handle

    - B&T side folder

    - 6.5" barrel, with a FPS of 380 on 0.2g

After drifting oover to Facebook like many others, I've started coming back as the groups there get worse and worse

I find that the BBS structure of forums allow for better navigation of themes and discussions than Social Media based Group UI.

As for airsofting, some of us have been in this hobby for 20-25 years.  I remember my first skirmish in 1994.

The thing is, learning and growth in airsoft gets to a particularly point and then the challenge curve reaches a plateau.  You can get proficient at weapon-tech, individual fieldcraft, and then build a good section/squad.  But to build beyond that size of organisation for anything more epic, requires doctrine, training, military mindset and discipline, and lots of money and hardware.  Most civilian players are not willing to commit to this for a 3-24 hour affair.  Only people who will function beyond the plateau are ex-military personnel, who have had the conditioning to begin with.

Hence airsoft is a bit of a lost cause to most, and life has other priorities that will push it aside.

It is a shame, a well planned airsoft event with combined arms and a good battlespace infrastructure can be far better experience than the average company sized infantry exercise.  Even a well planned section level airsoft event, is far more dynamic and team dependent than footie, rugby or basketball IMHO.

Airsoft is the sport of kings (or king makers).

While its a solid engineering feat,  I can see that without a firing pin delayer the gun will have seriously weaker recoil compared with other models, particularly on auto.

I would suggest looking at fitting a GHK firing pin assembly onto the hammer (GHK hammers are attached to their firing pins), as they work on a cam system and works as a built in delayer.

Otherwise, good effort!   With all the weebs liking all the HSLD AR setups, it is great to finally meet a man of culture :P

  5. The Original .50 Desert Eagle scope mounts are not 20mm weavers.

    https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/thedeserteagle/scope-mounting-woes-t4592.html

Marui sells specific Desert Eagle scope mounts back in the day...

But yeah I got mine.  Chrome plated hammer+trigger w/silver ceramic finish on the slide.

    - Its heavy, clunky, but still a little bit lighter than the .44 Desert Eagle I fired, but overall its fun.  Feels on par with Guarder DE kit.

    - Accuracy is good stock, with modified hop rubber it is even better.

    - FPS is pretty standard for a 6" barrel on propane @ 360fps on 0.2g or 330fps on 0.25g .

    - Kick is nice, "slow" but heavy.  Its not really a double-tapping type of deal, more a long range huntin' pistol.

     - Gas efficiency isn't great, but will finish a mag and a half or so.  Chopping recoil springs by 20% will increase that to 2 and a half mags per charge, increase kick and decrease impact on the outer barrel.

Fun gun, if I do go tactical with it then it would be Vest mounted w/SAPI plate, possibly in a Cmdr or TL loadout so I don't have to carry an MP7/MP9/Mini UZI or P90.

  6. Nevermind, figured it out now.  Slide rails are two piece of metal thats screwed and pinned onto the pot metal BBU.  Normally these slide rails are casted onto a slide but in the case of the FN 5-7 it is a part of the BBU.

One of the slide rails had already snapped the pin thats on the BBU.  So I proceeded to glue the rails onto the BBU with Liquid Nails construction adhesive.

My 5.7 was fine, did not like Propane on a hot day though so switched to Abbey Ultra which worked better.

Same issue as above the rails came away from the BBU causing cycling issues. I would suggest reinforcing the rail mounts ASAP.

Personally never had the issue of a cracked slide, 70% of the time was run off Propane, rest was Abbey Ultra. Probably 6k - 7k through when I owned it. I did however have the outer barrel detach from the hop unit and a friend of mine damaged to hop unit from use with a steel outer barrel.

Our answer to this was to epoxy the outer barrel to one half of the hop unit to prevent this.

Apart from those issues it has been the second best performing pistol I've ever owned, and I have owned 100s or all different makes.

Necropost, but can someone elaborate what is a "slide rail" coming away from the BBU?

I bought an old broken 5-7,  and I had already taken apart the blowback unit out of the slide, and aside from the blowback nozzle not moving in the BBU smoothly which I fixed, everything seems to be working ok.

I am looking to do preventative mods to it to keep it going for the foreseeable future as it is a fantastic gun out of so many pistols I have already owned.

I have even lathed down the hop unit, and added a rubber buffer there to prevent the inner slide from fractures.

  8. Thats the thing, the experience feels like a video game if the realistic weight isn't there.

I am not advocating guns which are heavier than real steel, but at least close to the real steel, so part of the experience is figuring out its trade-offs and quirks.

I might go steel barrel and wood kit, after buckets of 20 round mags, for the jungle warfare feel.

  9. Isn't it usually the other way round no? :P

I converted a WE upper to a 9mm Pak once, with a modified inokatsu bolt head and bolt carrier, along with a modified VFC lower, it had some issues ejecting consistently but otherwise it cycled ok

Good work though.  There is a lack of forged lower receivers for the WE M16/XM systems.  You COULD modify a vipertech lower instead.

Though to be honest, isn't most modern receivers are now cast anyways?

  10. It started life as a 7" rail.  I needed it to be around 4", so I cut it.

As the the top of the rail at 4" would've been inbetween one of the side cuts, it would've been freely suspended and would snag on things, so I pruned it back, to create a more streamlined look.

That is a WE HK416 lower and a M4 AWSS upper, with a custom cut and threaded 6" barrel, SVODA sliding stock, a MK43 flash hider, and a cut down MOE grip.  Clocks in at 330fps, and has a metal on metal "buffer" inside the stock which basically means the user gets hearing damage using the gun.  It is used mainly around vehicles and administrative roles.  Weighs in at 2.5kg.

The 7.5" PDW is a VFC M4 GBB with a Troy TRX rail, custom cut 7.5" barrel, MOE grip, and an HK PDW stock.  it clocks in at a stupid 430fps.  Weighs in at 2.3kg.

The last one is a replica of the Olympic arms K23B, based on an ICS M4, a cut down madbull patriot kit, a G&P Stock tube with a custom M4A1 sliding stock converted to CAR15 profile.  Weighs in at 2.3kg.

Note to others:  ICS receivers are NOT RS compatible barrel nut thread (i.e. on the madbull kit).  OD of normal AR15 barrel thread is around 31mm, OD of an ICS receiver is closer to 32mm.  It was a mission to get the threads/pitch to fit.

I pop in now and then, but things seem pretty quiet.

I still have most of my collection, but being a 'Chairsofter', none of it's been out of a box in 5 years+ - Chances are all the seals are buggered and they're just a load of paperweights now.

I was inspired in my early days by DumboRAT, with his fantastic reviews and amazing knowledge. but I'm not sure he was an Arnie's regular.

I recall he was a surgeon in training, so I guess that's what he does these days.

Nice to see Garry still around (one of the few people I met in person in the airsoft world, along with some of the AI Mag team and Mike and John from Elite, who shipped me boxes of shiny Western Arms goodies to review on a regular basis - Ah, heady days!) and most of the names he mentioned are familiar.

Other names I remember are Wege, BigAl, Renegade Cow, Hitman No2 and Utty (I'll admit I've done a bit of trawling and see a few of those old names still active).

I'm sure few here will remember me and even my reviews have disappeared from the web now, so it all seems a long time ago...

Facebook has killed a lot of Web Content - I've hosted a non-Airsoft related website for 20+ years and someone was looking for a document on a FB group recently - A number of people commented it used to be on my website, but it seemed no-one actually bothered using a search engine to find it still is! :)

I think it's the same mentality that makes binge watching box sets rather than waiting a week to see what Jack Bauer was going to blow up next the modern fad! Is it any wonder people can spread 'alternative facts' so easily if FB is the only place people look? :(

These days I spend most of my gun related time watching Forgotten Weapon's videos on YouTube - Very good content if you've not seen it!

I have been in airsoft since 1994,  and was there during the airsoftzone days.

My old login was "Commander Keen". I remember ol' DumboRat as I followed up on a number of his reviews, and I am still friends with Wege who is now in Australia  - the land of no-airsoft.

I still go out and airsoft, and I have a collection of 50 airsoft guns all upgraded and tuned.

But my definition of airsoft is no longer just running about shooting, it has become a way to building community; strategy formation, teambuilding, leadership coaching, and promoting self awareness.  Designing processes and frameworks, tactics and equipment doctrine, helping others plan and evaluate games and improving team performance.  For me this is much more purposeful and enjoyable, far better than having to play games where things descend into chaos every hour.

  12. The rationale behind that is to decrease gas consumption in the blowback cycle.

There are two springs which control the amount of gas which result in net rearward movement of the bolt carrier;  the main recoil spring, and the nozzle return spring.

A quicker rearward movement is a result of lightening of the mail recoils spring and the nozzle return spring.  That will result in less effort and gas used to push the bolt carrier rearwards, shutting the gas release valve sooner, using less gas without changing the rate of gas flow in the system.

But of course, as an open bolt system, the main recoil spring determines the striker force on the gas release valve, which will affect initial gas release impulse and will affect FPS if trimmed too much.  Over lightening of main recoil spring may also result in cycling and reliability issue.

Recoil will definitely be harder, and will affect the structure and buffering at the back of the receiver.

So it is all a balance.

Did cutting the recoil spring bring rof down? Been bugging me a bit realizing it's shooting as fast as an M1921 and was thinking of making a weaker spring with thinner gauge wire.

Yes I did, ROF is lower.

When you do it however, you gotta remember that on an open bolt, the impact force releases gas. So if you lighten that too much FPS will be affected.

Which is why I didn't buy this thing despite the Thompson being super cool, the fixes seem so simple to engineer (from a commercial point of view) that I can't give WE my money because they can be such half-a$$es. Add 15% to the price and just do it right.

Funny you say that, pretty much Most WEs I would have to do the same sort of fixes to them anyways.

It actually makes the WEs more flexible.  For example because I need to do that tuning, I can max out  gas efficiency, recoil, reliability, and power output where I would have trouble with say a GHK or a Marui.  For cheaper, a WE get better performance overall.

  14. Great review!

I bought mine recently, and its a fun gun.  Shoots at 320-330fps at 27*C, which is bit low for my liking.  However gas efficiency is very poor, I get 60 round/cycles out of a full charge.

I proceeded to trim the main spring by 30% and stretched + trimmed the nozzle return spring by 40%,  got around 80 rounds/cycles per charge, with a noticeable increase in kick.

I found that the flute valve was being slammed forward during the cycle and hence resulting in low FPS, using an older and stronger WE flute valve spring to keep the flute valve in place , which increased the FPS.  Its now shooting at 430-440fps.

Due to the same issues around the hop rubber constriction it is causing a dispersion.  The wobbly and misaligned barrel is also causing a number of accuracy issues.  So I proceeded to shim the barrel, which brought the rifle back to the correct point of aim.  I will be working on the hop rubber later today to get better accuracy.

All in all, it does need a heavier barrel and a wood kit, which I will purchase at a later date.
