I love this Type 56-2

Dont fret about the paijt job tho...to get the authentic finish ive found it to be a process of many seperate layers and materiels. Those patches are a great start-once ive got my orange sprayed, then its a black wash, wiping off the raised parts for depth and shadow. Im a sucker for red "russian" myself-ive had good results with basecoat, black wash, then a wash of crimson ink, putting a bit of fairy liquid in the mix; it makets it very oily and it paijts itself rlly-you caj do this with black. Once ive got rhe tone its just a nice thick shell of wood varnish-the toffee apple look.

Only just discovered them myself, and so what if theyre not derived from a combat rifle rather than an export for sporting? Imo its the first real evolution in the platforms ergonomics-that is for ris-and im not putting a kg of metal on a 3+kg rifle. The ak12 stock id include, also the akmsu set, the other aks (russian) follow a strictly defined design.
Oh, ah ha! I did find a carbine '74-the bulgarian aks74s - it sez they werent a big success among troops. I guess in cqb in the hands of an operator its different though.
Another eastern bloc client i read about in this book (croatia? Estonia?) Make all of theirs ij nato 7.62. Pretty interesting choice- it said using this round, the platform would be operating at its max possible performance - any more is damaging - in an ak of all things.

Yeah right the ergonomics; theyve been building this platform for decades, but seeing this handguard prob was the first time idseen an ak and thought: I bet that has excellent handling. I wonder what couodexplain that- i mean russia are at the cutting edge of mili tech-some concepts are just beyond. I mean the silent pistol without an sd? The cartridge just sucks in the gas...the the an 94-shoots two bullets within the samerecoil cycle- Doubling the trauma and piercingof the bullet used..but the AK just hasnt seen a lotof this tech; Its modernized, for sure, but in pretty limited ways. Before i knew anything about them I honestly thought they were the same rifle, besides colours and slight externals. Maybe this is why when an ak variant-even a distant relative - makes the news, its always just the "AK47" rare as those weird tied up rat knots now, and I believe production didnt even exceed one million.( cd b wrong tho) which is a tiny number, at least in the land of AK's- sold by the tonne, and even the poorest pattern copy is soldier proof, bomb proof.
Say there is a ww3, its depressing to think weve created a rifle thatll survive us..worse still to know you can use them or look at them.
Oh i was gonna ask some o' the AK brains about soviet presentation ak's as im coming up with a project. I know the soviets were fond of ornate firearms as gifts; IE stechkins in hand carved boxes to friendly diplomats, engraved pistols - big status symbols, pistols- as yet the only cerremonial ak ive seen is a gorgeaus green akm presented by kalash himself to the best guards. Atm im thinking like a kgb aks74u, blacked out and embelished as an award for KGB or Gru Operations; black rifles for black ops...and the aks74u fairly screams Spec ops. Parts have been chromed- bolt, flashider, and a tanker make has been smoothed completely,polished and chromed, ornate kgb enamael added, the rest is battle worn though: a trophy thats actually been out there kind of thing. Handguard is ebony and waxed, and the grip is crimson fakelite, with many black washes. Im thinking of a finishing touch; a copper trigger maybe...there has to be alfa spesnats insignia in there somewhere too.
Rant over if you havnt lost interest. Its espresso.

Ribbed handguards (plum) on the 74SU was only a prototype but never went into production as the 74SU was halted from further production in favor for longer AKs. It eventually became a unicorn and everyone wanted one so K-Var started making them in plum and black. Mine are stock WE.On railed gas tubes, there's only Ultimak which replaces the gas tube and is further anchored on the barrel. There are also railed upper handguards and rails that go over the upper handguard, attached to the lower handguard.
Cool. This allsounds a bit like the akmsu to me andi love a mythical engine of destruction. Hmmm...kyhber pass or prototype carbine for spec ops, so secret only one image and 2 parts remain?... - one thing ive noticed is the sudden jump from the 74su to the full length rifle-seemingly the russians seen no need for multiple lengths eg ar15 which starts at the pistol barrel lengthpretty much going up to big game hunters territory...just 2 solutions- baby ak and mother ak - to two problem, cqb combat for sf and rear echelon; and the universal assault rifle- they chose the cheapest and easist option. do like the ribbed handguard though, i cdnt seein thepics but does it actually retain the classic ak shape beneath allthat rubber? Also ive seen these ribbed polymer mags by lct v similar; are these part of a set?

Thats actually quite a nice, authentic touch you dont see too often-definately a kalash thing. They had this late war mosin nagant, zeta, which was identical in every way to the rs except one: its built to a far higher quality finish; no crappy tool marks or poor machining. Well,its a nice touch until you scrape yourself and bleed like a stuck piggy. Id just put a bit of that silicon that sets and goes watertight (its uk-waterproofing is pretty important)
This ribbed handguard, Ive seen it on 74u's a lot and Im really tempted to "modernize" a bit and get one with the polymer stock. I think this would look decent with a cyma bulgaria mag, and maybe a very subtle shade of 74m plum, which ill assume is a dark burgundy untill i can c some decent hi-res pics. Either that, or a dark marine blue-nice colour and goes with white, greys, khakis, mettalics.
Anyways is this handguard derived from a real aks74u variant? Im assuming it would be a 74m carbine but im really not up onthe newer variants- there a two many for one.ive seen a really nice LCT one, but forthe same price i could get the full dboy kit, with money for the akmsu fpashider i like.
The quality will be inferior no doubt, but god created krylon ultra flat for that.
Another thing ive seen is a rail mounts to the ak gas tube; is that the part where the upper handguard goes, or the part of gas tube that juts out from it? Or maybe it attaches to the handguard (pics werent good at all)

Its a beast. Props for using carbon fibre as well, if thats what it is. Acogs rule, mos def- specially on top of a carry handle, maybe with a masterkey in good old wood and steel for the 90s operator thing.
Not sure if you can get them, but the early nv scopes "starlight" i think theyre called - used on falklands by brittish SF - those woukd look awesome on a rifle length AR or M14. Strictly a dummy tho; those things weiged a ton and probably are collectors items by now.
Edit: just occured to me: does anyone use night vision optics? Theres a place I play at, cqb, based in the tunnels of an old fort in pompey...fantastic buzz cept for the complete lack of light; a large part is pitch black, and crying out for nvgs or scope.....course mil spec stuff like that wd require a mortgage or two I think.

Just checked out a great little tutorial, and its a great base for a camo scheme also looks great on guns that dont wear paint well like the g36c (this is in fact my test gun). For my svd i think ill go for that jungle look-the dusty basecoat and a simple scheme. Im using a dove grey, feldgrau (greenish gray, khaki - but cant decide a green, and the furniture, and mag is getting the full scheme - the dust c9ver is gonna get an "SF" job-a couple lines or panels of colour strait to distressed steel. I find olive drab dark - can anybody suggest a paint brand or colour looks like krylon nato green only not quite so bright- a tiny bit paler?
I guess basex on my modeling hobby way back, any scheme would appear less contrasting, more blended-by adding a common colour to every colour in the scheme-possibly the feldgrau for this one.

I like; i like it a lot. Im soon to be dipping my toes into diy camo paint, after heing inspired by a paint job on moh warfighter: it doesnt look like a paint job at all, but rather as if the gun is dusted with sand. The basecoats a brown, and all everything but the crevices is a v light sand colour....very simple, but cool, and pretty unique.
I plan to achieve this by using a brown base, and doing the majority in sand. To get thw dusty look ill try drybrushing the sand, huilding up the layers, blending it into the base; if its done r8ght, the effect is very organic, quite like some aks on this page. I mean ive seen those pro camo jobs that are too perfect you know? Great looking, but just not how id imagine a camo job irl - take the above ak- i can see some grimey operator in a foxhole hastily appplying paint for the next skirmish....ive seen pics of sf guys with guns like this- never the pristine, commercial prints with sharply defined edges.
Btw: Weapon Paint...anybody use it,? Its uk mil spec apparantly, and can be removed-painting your gun is a leap of faith, after all-theres always the knowledge you could ruin your gun.
Personally i love painted aks that incorporate a camo scheme into the guns "natural" colours-especially with wood furniture, which imo wd be a shame to paint if its good wood.
Just seen the type 56 btw-those things are incomparable to many replicas out there - the sheen of the wood, the sheer dead weight when you hold one; imho the most perfect replicas of Chinese weapons, and their range is really eclectic too - Id love to see a company do some south korean weapons, they have some seriously nice hardware.

ICS can use any TM compatiable rail system, as long as you change the barrel nut to a G&P one. Below is my old ICS m4 (top in picture). Same goes for suppressors or flash hiders as long as they are the correct threading (CCW/CW). There is a lot of myths surrounding ICS M4's and most of them just arent true. The only thing you cant change on them is the receiver due to the split gearbox design.
Hey thanks; youve opened up loads of possibilities ive dreamed of for my m4 but thought wd he imp9ssible, all thanks to various "experts" telling me nothing will fit.
I want to to make a car 15, early type with the shortened triangle handguard and short mags; Im keeping the barrel the same length but want to get an m16a2 handguard, cut it down to m4 length. Ive done this with the jg m4 so will use their handguard and its tm compatible, so apart from the lug you mentioned and the d ring is there anything else i need?

Ive fallen in love with that AK....and i normally hate the tactified ones; youve made it work and respect for that; its a rare gift. I thin its cause it still recognisable as an old beaten up ak, just with modern parts added to it over the years, as the old owners die the new ones pick it up, add parts to it, but its steal got the heart of an old and abused ak.
That grip is a work of art; if you did the paint yourself would you care to share a few tips? Im modernizing mine a bit by adding a 74m stock, a micro scope, Ive got some short sections of rail and may fit them to the stock. I would love a grip like that though, the colour is perfect and screams: "im old, been around man, and killed in tripled digits."

Real nice; last you a lifetime that will, you can tell its very hi grade kit just by looking at it. Imo i love the sopmod kit though as its based around the humble m4-so you can just pick up a piece at a time untill you have the entire "block". They use daniel defence rails i think? Or that could be KAC - i can only use ICS brand stuff as its designed to only accept that. Crafty move, cause they can charge a fortune for parts-I mean a qd suppresor was almost fifty quid, and their S.I.R is approaching £200.
I use mine in m4a1 config but i am building the sopmod kit. Eventually its gonna be an entire modular weapon system, with drop in components to make a pistol, pdw, sopmod carbine, rifle, DMR, all in a suitcase.

Whats the base rifle? Ive got an ics m4a1 myself, like others its got the 90's look-or the KISS look as they call it now. Its gonna be Sarah Conners assasination AR15-the silenced, bipod stabilized one she shoots very badly with, but shows serious sex appeal - proving a rule ive found - you can only be truly "tacticool" if its unconsciously done.

And heres a bog standard vanilla flavoured m4. Its the ics m4 ris with long qd suppresor; but all that makes it too heavy so now its just an A1 with stubby stock.The acu camo wraps 1 quid a roll, but im getting some proper goretex stuff in flecktarn. All im doing is getting a semi decent acog-thats going on the carry handle.
Pparantly the barrel is adgustable according to ics but I dont know how to do it, does anybody know?

Its nice, and i normally cant stand big handcannons. This is actually the model i like most, with the longer barrel. If i had one id get that barrel threaded and fit a great big dont-*fruitcage*-wit-me muzzle break- like you see on the "big boy" .50 BMG rifles. Its the same length as mias deagle carbine in metal gear 4, except I dont know if you can get the stock.

How bout the 60 round coffin mag? Thats probably the most distinctive feature- just curious if youre going to do that as well.

Related note: could I use a real A74 or (preferabaly) ak47 pistol grip on my aeg relatively easily?
(Im not sure if the rs ones were hollow 4 cleaning kits or something; if so it shd b easy)

Posted this in the "in the field" thread but it's also a pretty good look at my rifle.
Well done mate-I saw your idea from the beginning and tbh thoght it would take months ne years but its vsry good work and one of a kind.
I've recently brought some 74m furniture in plum but the colour just doesnt look like the RS service rifles colour....can anyone reccomend a decent "plum" spray paint? The closest match ive found has been a burgundy fabric dye but no way will that stick to tge textured polymer.

A quick question on top covers, I've recently purchased a CM 040c (AK74m) which I'm running as an AK 103. My only issue is that CYMA insist on using the ribbed style top covers which is wrong for either the AK74m and AK 103 (though you so see the former with ribbed covers on occasion). It's not a massive bother but it would be nice to get a more correct smooth top cover, CYMA seem to use their usual AK47 covers on their AK105/CM 040d and I might just pick one of these up and paint it black unless there are better options. Cheers.
Im pretty sure ive seen smooth dustcovers by dboys, i personally am building a blinged out aks74u and used a belt grinder to really polish it, and noticed it will take those ridges totally flat with very little effort at all, as the dboy cover i used is some type of alloy not pure steel, but it should work on any as those grinders are srsly aggrssive-be careful.

Its a nice piece - props for modifiying it conservatively (you see soke utter monstrosoties) id like to add some RS parts to my ak as there are some you just cant get as airsoft parts; also the RS can be so much cheaper ironically. (Svd optics eg) I have seen that bright orange bakelite colour in a film...cd have been black hawk down maybe- the guy in the doorag with that "krinkov"
I hate my 74u stock and im swapping out for a polymer '74m stock- but I want the classic look, so would fakeliting it work?

Im at bare metal now and I was thinking maybe a black wash would give the shadow and matte finish im after? This is mine btw; you see how "young" it looks? Only really done the handguard and tgat needs varnishing.

Some like a bit of wear on an ak; some like theres tolook like its been utterly beaten to hell-then kicked to afghanistan and back....you dont see the latter somuch, cause i think we like a careworn but pretty AK, not an actual battlefield survivor.
Really nice distressing work though;Ive no idea how youdid the rust, its not my taste, but it standsout from a crowd (and the aks74u is a crowd now, a wood and steel m4 imho)
Did you actually take it to bare metal btw? Ive done this with my dustcover, but it lookstoo damn shiny; any pointers how toget that great matte finish?

I know its a *badgeress* of a cliche: the ak was made for ignorant peasants who couldnt be trusted with tying the8r laces much less use a rifle, and its ; by the time it entered mass production (after theyd perfected mass production using stamped pieces of metal, )the red army were a modern, proffesiojal force-and they had the concept of the universal weapon figured out-one army one weapon.
We had the sterling at this time, the bren, smle, lee sniping variants, webley revolvers....they had the ak 47 and rpk.
Its not light, but imagine the effects on logistics. Id love a pistol too, psm or tt33, but for ease of use having one single system trades weight for simplicity-just the rifle, bullets, and mags-no pistol mags, speedloaders, ammo for the mg etc
And with the nukes they had, youd imagine infantry to be pretty pointless.
Worldguns good. I got this new book complete encyclopedia of guns for 4 kwid from a discount bookshop. Its 100% exhaustive up to around 2010, with almost every millitary and police weapon inc every ak producer- even north korea - eastern variants etc. Inferesting to note that arguabally it wasnt the g3, ak or ar that spawned as many indiginous derivatives-its stoners ar18-its ancesters arm the UK, any user of g36, the sar21 (singapores current issue-no3 on the wish list, after M1c garand)
