Catman
Day 7 - Monday 26th, March Today...We have some Videos for you to watch on YouTube!!! :D We cleaned up the heatshield and welded it onto the front of the gun. You can see the piston as it'll be housed when it's built in a bit more. We were then able to put the two bushings in at either ends of the outer-barrel in in the heatshield. Ok now WATCH THIS VIDEO FIRST - this is showing how smooth the barrel will move (sorry had to fake the movie links up, can't embed youTube in Arnies (boo ) click the pic to watch): Now you've watch the above video... We took the piston out and did a bit of jiggery to do a recoil test so we'd have an idea of how hard it'll shake the gun at 5bar of pressure. In the video you can see the piston being held on the end of the barrel by MadDog. I held the camera with one hand and the other hand was holding onto the back of the body. RPK
Wow, thats a lot of kick for an airsoft gun. Good thing it will be mounted.
DyNo!
Looks like it's turning out nicely. You should sell these things if it works out. Have you all considered making the recoil system electric? It seems like the recoil design would use/waste a lot of good gas. I'm thinking that if the battery was built into the gun or mount, it would maximize efficiency and $$$.
lordofwar
Cracking job guys keep it up.
Alpha2
Its just aswell you have decided to mount this on your landy, the original idea after Distant Thunder was to carry this between 3 guys, if you have any intention of carrying this amongst our entire squad we better have a weight lifting skirmish! Good work guys

MadDog
I would have loved to just get a real steel one, the amount of messing around to make the shell is unbelivealbe. Unfortunatly making a real steel gun shoot BB's is seen as re-activating it in the UK and is therefore iligal, wich is a major bummer! As you acn see we are getting close to getting it to cycle, a few more nights and we should be there. Will a while beofre its finished though, still loads left to do to make it look like a real 50. mililanishooter
Wenegade: is that a AUG mag im seeing lol.... cool though.... cant convert a real steel in hawaii either.....bummers..... have to make it from scratch like MadDog and Catman.... MadDog: i feel for you man lol just make sure the guns shoots correctly and straight then u guys can fiddle with the externals more.... aloha for now...
Catman
Wow, thats a lot of kick for an airsoft gun. Good thing it will be mounted. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Barrett M82 will be the next project - using the same(ish) system but more about that another time (like when we actually finish this and start on it) just make sure the guns shoots correctly , loud, hard and straight fixed It's already weighing a ton, the real thing weighs 38 kilograms - I wonder how close we'll get to that? Of course after we finish the gun we're going to have fun trying to make a turret and cutting a big hole in the roof of MadDog's Land Rover
lordofwar
catman i still want 2 mate on a cross chest harness, anyway got to say guys cant wait for this to be finished you know how i like big guns.
Catman
Day 8 - Wednesday 28th, March We began work on the tappet plate and also the rear of the gun where we'd sit the piston. We'd already agreed that we'd have to "warp" the design of the M2 a little in order for it to all work the way we wanted with the bits we had. We drilled out the back and welded the pipe from the inside to the body. Then welded a plate on the end of the pipe. The "pipe" out the back should be about half the length but now accomodates a lot of the piston. Still needs cleaning up with the angle grinder to make it look pretty. The cosmetic work can wait After some planning and fun with the angle grinder the 3 parts of the tappet plate get welded together: After all that welding, it was a little hot. I refuse MadDog's offer of a cup of tea. Piston goes in with the tappet plate in front of it (it's all sitting loose): We need to do some more work on the tappet plate so we can fix it to the outer barrel. We're waiting on the nuts for the piston to arrive - typically they're of awkard not-easy-to-get-in-small-numbers type size box of 1000 no problem... you want 1 or 10? bleh. By the time we get the nut that'll hold the tappet plate to the piston we'll be ready to do a proper recoil test. Say hello to ma little friend it's already getting a bit heavy to hold. With the ammo box that'll go on the side housing the gas cans and ammo; it'll definately need to be mounted
Chris North
After all the blow back demonstrations and excitement I forgot that you guys were making it fire bbs.
BigAl
If it's gonna be mounted on a landy why don't you make it so the gas in the mag can be replaced by a scuba tank in the landy. Edit:Forgot to say, great work so far guys.
Catman
cheers The BBs and Air/Gas line will come in through .50cal dummy shells we're going to get so we'll be able to have different set ups. CO2 and an auto-winder will go in one of the .50 ammo boxes - for use on the tripod. Then we're looking at a compressor or HPA set up for the landrover
