I'm pretty sure "lightsaber" is exclusively spelled in the American style.  Lucasarts never used the British spelling, and since it's their property, their way of spelling it is the only correct way.

 

Lightsabre is not a made up word, it is a sabre... of light.

 

Therefore either spelling can be used..

well, after a bit of googling, it turns out that the original Star Wars novelisation by ADF and GL listed it as "lightsabre", thus rendering this entire argument void, if GL can change his mind, I think we're allowed a little international spelling discrepancies.

 

Really? I did not know that. Ignore my argument, then. :)
