Hi guys!

I am a member of the Irish reserve defence forces, and I was just wondering today if i did try to sell my uniform on ebay or whatever, would anyone buy it. (I'm not selling it- sorry!)

I stumbled across this thread and read it with much amusement (The notion of us attacking canada.....! :D ). Anyway I thought I would register as a user and fill you in as best I can as regards...um..."aquiring" paddyflage (as you all call it).

This is the story:

The chances of you being able to buy official Irish DPM gear is ZERO, and it's even lower if you live in the UK or US or whatever! The reason for this is, as someone already pointed out, we have a low turnover of uniforms. Also, people tend to hang onto their uniforms after they leave the reserves. You simply cannot but the uniform anywhere. The irish regular army get issued gore-tex DPM wet gear, and even we in the reserves cant get this. I actually asked a lieutenant (whose father is in command of the irish cavalry) could he get me some of it. The answer is no. What we do in the reserves as regards wet gear is either use the issued stuff (which is ######) or buy american or french stuff which is readily available on the web or in specialist shops.

This brings me onto my next point. The closest DPM to the irish (from my own research) is actually called "Western european cammo" and can be bought online. The closest country to ours is american (not the desert stuff, obviously, but the woodland or whatever its called!) or mabye dutch or french. The size and shape of the patches of colour is quite similar. The american has more shades of brown in it though, and ours is by far the greenest and the darkest. (Its a lovely deep dark lush green!) The brit stuff it NOT like ours. The shape of the patches is different and they have yellow and more brown, where as we have several shades of green, brown and black.

Knowing someone in the Isish army will not help folks. They simply will not part with their gear. If you are lucky, an ex reserve or a friendly CQ (quartermaster) will sort you out, but it is unlikely. I havent even been sorted out yet!

Please remeber though, wearing the Irish army uniform under false pretences in this country is a serious offence (we have a history of terrorism and stuff like that- you cant be too careful) and you will get in trouble if you get caught.

Aside from that, I wish all of you the best of luck in your search for irish DPM! Keep your eyes peeled on the web and Ebay, or mabye you could get in touch with the manufacturer of the material. If y'all have any other questions, post them here and I'll be happy to help you.

This is an interesting pic. You can compare the different cammo the company makes. The Irish is on the top. The stuff in the bottom right is British (I think, I am open to correction of course) and I am fairly sure the stuff in the bottom left is German pea pattern. The desert stuff can be seen in the middle.

* Woodland DPM

* Saudi Variant 6-color desert (aka, "chocolate chip camo")
