AnotherJesus
If you want feedback on why it washed out, this might explain it. It would appear the whole gun is fairly dark, and the flag itself, is rather bright in contrast. So when you told the camera you wanted to take a photo of the gun, by pointing the focal point at the gun/shady part of the ground, it decided it was going to have to make the whole picture brighter, to get a better contrast of the focal point. Hopefully that makes sense. Anyway. If you want to recreate the same shot, try focusing on the flag, and moving the camera to the same place without refocusing. If your camera auto-focuses on a half click, then half click the shutter button, then hold it down and move the camera to to the point where you want to shot to be composed. If you have a fancy camera, you can often turn off the auto focus. Or even play around with the exposure time to get it looking right. Less harsh lighting may be something to consider. Try taking the picture is a softer light environment. Maby only with the 1 light source, like a 40watt bulb. These are only some techniques, they may or may not work. Ultimately, it's going to take patience. As for feedback on the gun. I like what I can see. Good thing the flag and the AK both are beaten up. Makes them seem like they should be together. : )

Carter
Question, I want natural wear, but I want to speed it up a little. Could I thoroughly paint the metal parts of my M14 silver, and then paint one or two light coats of black over that? That way, the black paint will wear away resonably quickly because it is a light coat revealing the silver underneath. Theorectically, this method should quickly produce years of wear, but really only in places that would wear normally.

NO that would not turn out well... not only will the "wear" LOOK like paint, but it will be a thick coat, and obscure detail, and make your rifle look fake. i do not recommend that. -Joe

Romulus
I had time to photograph the next stag of the work on my AKSU today. This isn't the final version (I need to wear the stock, paint wash the grips/get worn RS grips, polish the outside, and fine tuned the look of everything else) but it is a huge change so I thought that it would be worth posting up some photos and getting suggestions and comments from people. If you have an idea of how I can do something better please pass it along. Before: After:

uscmCorps
Some fantastic weathering jobs done in this thread!!! I generally don't like weathering my guns as I tend to spend so much on them I can't bare to see them get scratched. I normally just prefer to let them wear naturally. Once in a while I get a gun that screams to be weathered. My new AK104 was one of those guns: This is actually the second time I've weathered it as the first time I felt I went too far, so I resprayed some parts of it flat black and re-weathered it. Pretty satisfied with it now. A big thanks to Guinness for the weathering guide he posted!

uscmCorps
Very nice 104 uscmCorps, although the ejection port looks a bit funky at the bottom... Hmmm... good point. It's actually part of the weathering but it is a little distracting. I should probably fix it. love that heatshield, USCMCORPS why so many AKs? any M249s? M203s? M14s? -Joe Oh don't worry Joe...
