motherland
Thanks. I stripped all the paint off, polished, used chemical cold bluing and aluminum blacking compounds to give it a worn finish, polished again to wear off the edges and such, then dunked all the metal parts into a lot of saltwater for the night. Pulled it out next morning, let it sit and corrode/rust. Then a quick wash and another polish. And there we are. And yes I am aware that the tape would have melted off from the heat coming off the barrel and gas pipe Anyways, it looks like this now, not fully complete yet, but getting there (still needs some stuff refinished and such): http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a119/ancorp/DSC05417.jpg Still more or less externally TM compatible. Can provide a parts list. Is that a MAG midcap? What did you do to it? Looks great! Edited January 18, 2009 by motherland
ancorp
Yep a MAG AKM 100 rounder. Put some wood stain on it. Eventually it starts to wear on the edges making it look less realistic, but still better then the original finish. I should try colored varnish instead...
my_plague_666
red-ish varnish looks good but looks a bit too dark to to spot on (same for that wood stain too), i'm waiting for some varnish to dry at the moment on a mag i've just done, might work better. i used red ink to create some colour variation and have gone over it with a clear/amber varnish to make it a bit more orange. looks good while it's wet but we'll have to see once it's dried i'll try to get hold of some orange ink too to mess about with colours a bit more. anyhoo i'll chuck some pics of my refinished mags and my worn AKS74 up at some point when i have suitable lighting. aznconverter
This came about by 1. dulling down the factory paint with steel wool, brillo pad, etc 2. leaving the paint dust on the reciever 3. light spray of brown krylon paint 4. smearing around the dust and paint combo Any thing else on the gun i should give attention to? Apache137
so..... ancorp's gun and many other "weathered" AKs in this thread look like they were well taken care of weapons that gained "natural" ware over the years, as far as teh "reality" aspect goes. aznconverter's guns looks like it was not well taken care of at all... all the nasty scratches and especailly that gash on the top make it looks .... hideous, for lack of a better word. and before anyone flames for "dissing," which is not my intent, shouldnt there be both sides of the coin when offering your opinion on a picture in the picture thread? negative and positive? otherwise whats the point? aznconverter
Yes yes. I like to think that mine changed hands with several middle eastern users(aside from the torch..i like all my guns to have night game capabilities) , ended up buried under the dirt in a weapons cache, and then was dug up by US personnel. At least I hope that's the impression it gives. Ancorp's on the other hand i imagine was well taken care of and modified by a wise russian soldier Edited January 21, 2009 by aznconverter
Renagade
All wear is from years of use, no fake wear here.
