You still have to have good grip on the front wheels for steering though. Not much point in being able to apply good power to go forwards or backwards if you can't steer...

Unless you live in the wilds of snowy Scotland or somewhere, there's no need to have snow chains. They are more trouble than they're worth for the light snows most of the UK gets, causing damage to road surfaces, tyres and the chains themselves if you don't remove them as soon as you get off the snow.

 

Snow socks are much better, easier and faster to fit and remove, small, light and easy to carry in the back of the car with the spare wheel all year round, won't damage the road or anything else if you are driving over patchy snow - although the socks themselves won't stand up to any prolonged use off the snow and ice.

 

Every car should have at least one pair of these in the back. There'd be much less traffic problems if everyone had these.
