Rhodesian/SADF Loadout Discussion

Recommended Posts

I know that Cyber Soldier, TheMerchantOfVenice and others are assembling or have assembled Rhodesian Light Infantry loadouts, and I'm looking into a 32 Battalion or other SADF Recce setup. As the kit necessary for these kind of setups is rather difficult to find, I thought that his thread would be a good place for people to share info about kit or where they bought it.

Rhodesian Forces:

The RLI (Rhodesian Light Infantry: http://www.therli.com/

The Selous Scouts: http://members.tripod.com/selousscouts/

Rhodesian kit is difficult to find, as the country ceased to exist in 1979. Tridentmilitary.com used to carry reproduction uniforms, but is currently out of stock. Your best bet is Ebay, but expect to pay a lot.

The South African Defense Force:

From the late 1960's up until the early 1990's, the SADF was involved in conflicts in Mozambique, Angola, and present-day Namibia. There were several specialized units devoted to tracking enemy fighters, who were mostly rebels from groups like SWAPO and the MPLA. Two of them were 32 battalion and Koevoet.

32 Battalion:

First saw action in Angola, later withdrawn into South-West Africa (now Namibia). Initially they wore a mix of uniforms, such as Angolan Lizard Patter or East German Strichtarn. Later developed their own camouflage pattern.

Again, tridentmilitary.com has Strichtarn, Lizard pattern, and some Transeki uniforms (similar to Lizard). However, it is very difficult to obtain original 32 battalion uniforms.

Do not forget Trident Military!

I am hoping to finish up the bare bones of my loadout soon! Also waiting for the new FN FALs to come out.

Don't worry, he's in there.

I can't wait to see your loadout. Who's making a new FAL?

Whoops! Seems I was wrong - this company only does wholesale.

I take that back - I've been in contact with them, and just finalized an order for SADF a pair of nutria brown trousers, a shirt, and a M83 chest rig. They have great prices; shirts and trousers are about $5 US, and the chest rig was about $9. They've also got M83 vests for about $20. The only problem is the shipping - on my $20 order, shipping was $30 and the order will get here in 6 weeks!

I've ordered a Transkei camouflage blouse, which looks pretty close to the 32 Battalion camouflage pattern. Combining that with nutria trousers, M83 chestrig, and USGI Jungles should approximate a 32bn setup. I'll post pics when I get it.

I spoke to Trident Militaria today on the phone and he claims that he will be stocking the new replica Rhodesian camo "sometime this year". Now knowing trident as I do (I'm a WW2 reenactor) that might mean anything.

Is there any other source out there aside from original items (which you should NOT be wearing to play airsoft in) for Rhodie camo?

Of course the real question in doing a Rhodesian Troopie impression is are you going to go all the way and wear short shorts and tennis shoes?

Hehe

I'm not sure if I have the legs for it - since I've stopped playing rugby my leg tan has disappeared.
