The page file for want of a better explanation is like an extension of the computers RAM residing on your computers hard-drive. The OS will chop stuff in and out between it and the actual physical RAM depending on whats being used at the time. Windows XP generally allocates one that is 1.5 times bigger than the amount of RAM you have installed.

This page tells you how you can change the size from the default:

Wild stab: Something to do with virtual memory and HDD free space.

You might have 13gb free on your HDD but some of that will be reserved by Windows as virtual memory and the game won't be able to use that space.

The page-file is the size of the virtual memory, AFAIK. You'll need to twiddle your virtual memory settings to ensure it's big enough AND that you still have enough additional free space on the HDD to run the game.

Most of the games I've installed recently tell you how much space the game will take up (10gb for example) and then warn you that you should have at least double that amount of free space on your HDD to allow for temporary writing to the drive etc.

PROTIP: Try to keep your page file's max an min = to each other. If you set your min to say 512 and max to 4096, you will have a hell of a fragmented drive because of the fluctutation up and down. Keeping the PF = will keep reduce fragmentation in your drive. 2048 is a good number. Its 2GB.
