Just missing the crane battery stock and away she goes gaming. G&G front kit with M4 body using a 1J spring to be powered by a 9.6v 2,500mah battery.

Any comments whether it looks better without the handle or not? Thinking of just mounting a red dot scope on the rail and be done with it.

Thanks

Hi

I think it looks a lot more slick without the handle. As you can see there are no front or rear sights on the gun so my first thought was just stick the spare reddot that I have. The wires were wired for a readymag but have since been rewired for the crane stock. Body is still plastic and the wobble isnt that bad, only change if n when it breaks.

I found a nice Apex version with batteries but asking too much. Will just go and buy a cheaper crane stock and make my own batteries using Sanyo 1.2v 2,500mah, biggest I could find.

I like the actual COLT receiver, no more of this M15 ######.

It's unique enough, especially with the SD front end, good job.

Leave the handle, and add a nice Aimpoint (or replica) on the receiver rail. It'd look really lush then. :D

Technically speaking, though, it ain't a CQB-R... ;)

They all have short outer barrels that end almost straight after the front sight, and then a standard flash-hider. A QD supressor can then be clamed to the flash-hider.

They must also have a RIS or RAS rail set, and a removable carry handle. Other than that, it's not really set in stone, but usually you'll see Crane stocks or VLTOR Modstocks, Aimpoint and EOTech sights/scopes, AN/PEQ-II boxes, lasers, flashlights, vertical grips...

I'll quote a post about M4 SOPMODs from the Wannabe.uk.com forums. I DID NOT WRITE THIS! It was written by 'Karlos' on the forums, and a lot of time and effort went into it, I'm sure. Don't think this is mine - once again, I didn't write it, but it may be useful in some way.

Deep breath..... :)

As Wannabe has said, building the SOPMODM-4 can prove to be expensive, depending on what level of accuracy you want to aim for. I started putting Airsoft SOPMODM-4 together a while ago now, when only real steel parts were available for the accessory kit. Now however, it seems the HK and TW Airsoft manufacturers have cottened on to the popularity of SOPMODM-4, and you can now pick up copies of most of the accessory kit; M203 QD leaf sight, KAC BUI, ACOG, etc.

The thing you need to remember too is that different units/forces both in the states and now worldwide (Australia, Canada, Israel, Kuwait, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia and the UK have bought SOPMODM-4) have modified or changed SOPMODM-4 to suit their own needs. The Canadians and Australians for example have replaced the Trijicon TA01NSN ACOG with the Ernst Leitz Elcan sight. The US Marines Force Recon add the KAC 600m BUI to their kit, plus they modify the receiver with the DPMS ambidextrous selector switch and Badger Ordnance charge handle latch, where as standard US Marines use standard SOPMODM-4 with the standard KAC BUI removed(!) from the kit. More specialist units (TF20, ST6, Delta, etc) go one step further with more major accessory changes. Although an accessory has been chosen by NAVSPECWAR to be part SOPMODM-4, it doesn't necessarily mean it's the best part for the job and members of these elite units are known to buy their own accessories for their SOPMODM-4, at their own expense!

The standard SOPMODM-4 configuration, going back to '99 hasn't changed THAT much. Infact it's exactly the same apart from the fact the DoD have approved more alternatives to be used within the accessory kit, IE, the Aimpoint M68 instead of the Trijicon Reflex and Surefire M3 combat lights instead of the Insight VLI. Most recently the Eotech 552 has received DoD approval so expect to see this appearing on more USSF carbines.

OK, so the basic SOPMODM-4 is pretty much this (i've included whether there is an Airsoft replica alternative to real steel where I know of one!) Also, when I've specified an Airsoft-made alternative, I've specified the airsoft way "done properly", IE, as close to the real thing as possible/best quality, all in my opinion of course...... smile.gif

Colt M4A1 Carbine with KAC Rail Interface System

TM Marui M4A1 RIS, with Guarder or GB-Tech outer barrel and Systema, G&P or Gurader metal receiver. There are many many more manufacturer's of M4's now, with G&G, G&P, ICS and of course Classic Army all offering a "Tatical" M4 carbine. It's highly likely that one of these would offer you better value for money by coming already upgraded, or fitted with a metal receiver. This is great, but what were aiming for here at wannabe is authenticity. Many of the newer HK custom house-made M4's tend to use not only cheaper quality receivers, but receivers with inaccurate trades etc. At the end of the day it's down to how much of a wannabe you are and of course your budget. "You pays your money.." as the saying goes.

KAC Vertical Grip

The standard TM grip is good, but I've found the best airsoft vertical grip available is probably the G&P. Doesn't creak like the Marui version.

Colt Carry Handle/Sight

Classic Army, ICS or Guarder metal M4 Carry handle

Trijicon Reflex + RX14 mount

No airsoft replica. Purchase real steel circa $300 for the sight, another $140 for the mount

Trijicon TA01NSN 4xACOG

G&P ACOG Replica, or if your feeling flush, go for a real TA01NSN, circa $750

AN/PEQ5 Insight Technologies Visible Laser Module

There is no airsoft replica of this module. You could bodge something up but it wouldn't look right to a real Geardo. I'm still trying to find one of these myself, infact it's the only part of the SOPMOD kit I haven't got and up until earlier this week I didn't even know who made it! (thanks Wannabe!)

AN/PAQ4C IR Light

The AN/PAQ4C, although included with the kit, has to all intent been replaced by the PEQ2 which is both an laser pointer AND illuminator in one, but, for completeness it maybe worth getting something for your SOPMOD kit. G&P make a very good replica of the PAQ4C, although obviously with visible laser only. There are however a few talented people about who can install IR illuminators in the unit, so it maybe worth considering this.

AN/PEQ2 IR Pointer/illuminator

ANGS or G&P PEQ2 battery box. ANGS looks the most authentic, whilst the G&P one looks pretty good AND can take a 3300mah 9.6v battery. G&P one then is probably the best compromise between battery size and realism. Go for the ANGS if your a milsim'er though

KAC QD Supressor

The G&P KAC QD Suppressor is easily the most accurate copy of the SOPMOD suppressor. GBTech used to do a version (which was twice the price) which was slightly better but they stopped production. Available in both clockwise and anti-clockwise (standard)

Insight Technologies Visible Light Illuminator (VLI)

King Arms, who have been very busy knocking out USSF-used replica kit have recently started selling a VERY good replica of the VLI. Infact I would say it's so good it's almost better than the real thing!! You can pick this up at most HK-based Airsoft retailers now. That said however, most real operators have ditched their issued VLI's in favour of Surefire lighting solutions, so a 6P with a GBTech KAC mount should be sufficient and give good performance.

KAC QD M203 Leaf Sight

Both G&P and GB-Tech now do a copy of this item and they are very good. Unfortunately at the time there was only the real steel available which cost me $180!

M203 Grenade Launcher

The best, most accurate airsoft M203 grenade launcher for SOPMOD has to have been the limited edition model manufactured by GB-Tech. Not only was it black, featured the correct QD mounts and short barrel, it also is the only Airsoft M203 ever to be made with the mounting holes for the KAC Quadrant sight system. Unfortunately this unit was very expensive when released putting it out of reach of many airsofters and with it's discontinuance shortly after manufacture the resell price on these has rocketted. A much more affordable alternative would be one of the G&P or Sun Projects M203 models, now available with the shorter barrel AND the QD kit is available for these seperately.

OK, so this is the core kit. As mentioned before, the kit has been changed to fit the need of different units around the world but it has also matured and where necessary parts of the kit have been replaced with superior items. The Colt M4A1 (and most recently HK M4A2) for example now has a Fiberite LE seven position stock instead of the standard colt item (not to mention different SF units employ their own "Mod Stock" items). The trijicon reflex, although still used, has been usurped by the Aimpoint M68 and the Insight Technologies VLI ditched in favour of a surefire lighting solution. Even mounting options have been changed, with the A.R.M.S M69 6015 NV mount being dropped by some units in favour of the GG&G mount system

More and more HK retailers and custom gunshops are realising the money that can be made from SOPMOD/USSF kit loadouts etc, and you will find that GB-Tech, STAR and most prevelantly at the moment King Arms are releasing replicas of accessories used on SOPMOD by specialist units (Elcan replicas, DBAL/OTAL SPP kit, various BUI's and mounts, etc)

All I can suggest you do is try and tailor your SOPMODM-4 configuration to that of your specific unit, as you would your LBV, BDU's etc.

If you have any further questions, or have some information you think might be valuable to other wannabe's concerning SOPMOD please post them on this thread

I Hope this helps in your SOPMODM-4 project. If you need some more pics watch this space as I'll be posting a link to an updated gallery shortly

Good luck,

Karlos
