Shao14
Ok, just recently (like last week), I noticed that the webpage here automatically refreshes itself every 30 seconds. Has anyone else notice this or do I get some kind of worm on my computer? It's normally fine, but sometimes it gets in the way of my scrolling and clicking. Is Arnie working hard behind the scenes to add more and more bells and whisles to the site?
MooCow
im refreshed by the juices of the forums every 30secs or so too... unless im wormified, it refreshes...
5thElement
I've noticed this aswell...never timed to see how often it's doing it though but it seems quite regular....any ideas anyone?
MooCow
i say arnies is trying to look at our faces whilst on his site... how does he do it? his programming allowed him to reverse the function of the monitor... now (average screen size) he'll look at you from a 15inch webcam look arnie... im blowing you a kiss
R22Master
Hmmmm, mine never auto-refreshes.
joeking27
Did you sit there staring at the screen? What? I didn't. Honest. It could be an IE thang...
gazchap
I've noticed that the tabs I have open in Firefox seem to auto-refresh every so often as well, although I haven't timed it. Personally it gets right on my nerves as it slows Firefox right down to a crawl whilst it tries to refresh about 20 tabs simultaneously (I like to open threads from the "get new posts" page in separate tabs and then read through them all afterwards) I daresay it probably isn't doing much good for the bandwidth usage of the site either
MooCow
im not on IE, im on firefox, but it refreshes... quite often actually... more often than 30sec intervals
R22Master
And I am on IE6 and it has never refreshed on any of my computers (I have 5 different machines that all access Arnie's on a regular basis).
Shao14
Hmm, interesting, I guess it's not exactly refreshing. If you watch the status bar at the button of IE browser, you see "Done" normally, but every 30 seconds, you'll see it briefly says, "Opening page ... blah blah blah". It's just more obvious on firefox.
gazchap
It's definitely the entire page that is refreshing. When I'm downloading something large that is saturating my Internet connection, I can watch Firefox slowly redraw the page as it downloads it in chunks on the refresh. 5thElement
Im using firefox aswell...i'll need to see if it does it on IE for me...

Siciro
Im using Opera and I get auto refreshes on arnies only. Unless I set it to auto refresh a page. dosnt bother me tho. Infact I just noticed it yesterday. And thougt little of it.
elrey
I timed it (on Firefox 1), exactly 30 seconds. I've only noticed it on Arnies. Says on mine, "transferring data from akmeter.akmos.ru"? But since the page is cached, it doesn't seem to actually affect the page, only the tab icon and the status bar. Aha, solved it! It's updating the currency converter! Look at akmos.ru, it has an exchange rate thing called Forex, which is the name of the thing on the bottom left of the page here. It blinks every thirty seconds to update the exchange rate. Edited April 26, 2005 by elrey
HaVoC
And I thought I was going mad...
Shao14
Aha! Excellent observation. What role do you play? I bet sniper.
5thElement
So thats what it is lol does currency really change that often?! lol
gazchap
I don't know why the entire page refreshes then, unless there is a bug of some sort in Firefox which makes it redraw the entire page when the contents of an iframe changes. I don't think it downloads the whole lot again, but I'm pretty sure it does actually redraw the whole lot.
DrewLawson
My computer doesnt refresh at all. should I be worried

R22Master
My computer doesnt refresh at all. should I be worried <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Nope. Mine doesn't either
Shao14
Nope. Mine doesn't either <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Maybe yours does it so fast that you don't notice. Does the currency converter on the left side update itself on your computer? It updates on mine automatically every 30 seconds, and the time changes every minute (though the rate doesn't change much ).
R22Master
Yeah, the currency converter regularly refreshes itself, but that only affects it's own little window. The rest of the page remains as it was the last time I manually refreshed it. The Server Time at the bottom right of each page doesn't automatically refresh either. I like it this way
staticzero
Mine auto-refreshes, I'm using Safari. At first it was a bit annoying seeing the status bar flash out of the corner of my eye, but now it doesn't bother me, really. Might be nice if it was less frequent.
