cafemondo
Just come across these unusual boxes today. Theyre the same size and style of the standard 5.56mm ammunition cases however theyve been painted and have very different trades on them. The most unusual trade is the 'SAS' one on the top, is it to do with the regiment or does it stand for something else? Has anyone got any info on them and their use? This one is date stamped 1972 with a checknote inside dated 83.
tom lawson
Well they're British at least.. I doubt that they're for 'them', I imagine that it has something to do with the type of grenade that the box holds. On the top for easy identification when they're placed side by side? -Angel-
Wouldn't it be: 5 Grenades? Discharge? Anti? Riot? Irritant? LRL11A1 *Brit designation for the particular cannisters?* Then 'CS' in big letters. My guess based on that would be a case for 5, anti riot, CS gas grenades.
blackopssniper92
I don't want to look like a noob or just plain stupid. but why does any one type the name of a certian spec ops group and only refer to them and "them"? and I have to agree with Angel. I also don't think that the color of the can has any thing to do with what is in it. I have seen ammo can in all colors of the rainbow. most of the time they are painted with what ever is on had at the time.
cafemondo
Thanks for the clarification Angel. What about the SAS trade though, is it an acronym for something else? Its been done at the same time as all the other trades by the condition and look of the paint and wear. Another box has the same trademark but it is missing off the third. -Angel-
My post was all guess work. But it would kinda make sense from the stenciling on the side.
Thorbard
Thanks for the clarification Angel. What about the SAS trade though, is it an acronym for something else? Grid reference, warehouse code, batch number... could be anything... As this page ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAS ) shows, SAS has many more meanings than just that handful of regiments. The army tend to refer to the Special Air Service as 'sass' (pronouced like '*albatross*') rather than 'S.A.S.' which is a civvie thing. The sas refer to themselves as 'the regiment'. Almost Life of Brianesque, "I'm them and so's my wife!" Now on the subject of the ammo can, I'm off to the DIY to fetch stencils and spray paint!

Also, random unrelated factoid here!
