Requesting ability to actually be able to edit my posts

Recommended Posts

As seen in title, there has been many many times i've wanted to edit my posts (to maybe add more info, perhaps?) but haven't been able to because of.... I don't know, the forum settnings are redicilous.

Fix, now, thanks. <_<

"If you don't like it you can leave" is one of the more ignorant responses you can give someone Ed.

I've used it more than once and I don't like it but it's pretty much to be reserved only for someone who has already threatened leaving(why waste time dragging it out?) or someone who obviously has no intention of changing their attitude to fit the minimium requirement, for everyone else you should try to fix the issue or try to explain it so that even if they still don't like it they at least know why it's there.

I've been to another forum where members can add to previous posts with updates(cannot remove/edit original post), that's always worked fairly well except sometimes you get people adding snide remarks to their previous posts that are less likely to be seen and then there was that one guy who added porn to all his old posts before he jumped ship...

One of the bigger issues with allowing anyone to edit or remove their own posts at anytime is someone will always abuse it. Adding/removing misleading information, inappropriate material, insults, or members editing out their own stupidity(shoulda thought alittle harder about it when you posted). Sales section for example a bad seller can post a fake item along with several real items, sell the fake then remove the evidence or list a damaged item as perfect condition then after it's been sold edit in the correct information on it's condition so if those buyers make a fuss they can deny it, excusing the edit stamps for legitimate edits(adding items as sold, ect.) All of which happened alot on one of the local forums I used to visit until they removed the old classifieds system and replaced it with a bulletin board style section where no edits, posts or comments could be made.

If you feel there is a real issue(don't waste their time) with something you've posted you can use the report button to bring attention to the post, explain what's wrong and what you'd like edited then a mod will review the post to decide if it really needs editing/removing or.... you could always make another post apologizing for the previous, which no one ever does.

and now since everyone knows their reports arn't anonymous..

You could avoid this issue all together by putting more thought and common sense behind each of your posts before listing them rather than treating the forum like a big spastic instant messenger ^_^

I'm afraid this isn't really viable, and I can't really see a point to it, either.

You have two hours to edit your post; that should suffice for most purposes, and it's quite simple to add another comment if you wish to leave an update (for instance on a project you have underway).

Allowing all users to edit their posts would open up the forum to all sorts of abuse by individuals intentionally mis-selling items in the knowledge that they could quickly amend descriptions should they have a complaint reached. Out of closing the whole sales section, or pleasing the first individual I have encountered with a gripe about the edit cut-off, I'm afraid I'll have to adopt the more utilitarian approach. :)

Apologies, in too late for the lockage on the previous thread

if there was a way to do it selectively (ie to particular sub forums) there would be some merit in it

I'm thinking of project and readers review subforums specifically - it woud be beneficial if the original reviewer could update their initial posts in those topics rather than have to sprinkle ammendums etc over the course of a 10 or 20 page thread.

eg Could be issues that werent apparent initially, changes manufac has made to a gun since, mistakes in their original approach to a project or better ways they've found since to carry out same task.

Makes life a lot easier for someone coming in new to one of those threads 6 months or so later, and who has to gather up the original information plus any ammendums that might add/or contradict that, by ploughing thru 10 or 20 pages of posts. In couple of cases even 80 and 90 pages...

I'd be reluctant to see it used for other sections - as was said in previous thread could be open to abuse in sales section Though ultimately while sales section allows externally hosted images theres still potential for an element of that

'gun isnt like it looked in the photo'

'yes it is'

'no it isnt you've replaced the externaly linked photo you originally had with one that has same name so its showing up in place of the original one you linked to'

What if i want to add something? Like a picture? What if a person in the Project Suggestions part want to edit his original post so it will easier for new pepole to browse the topic?(Yes it has happened) and so on.

This is the only forum i've been on that has this rule, and if it works on the other forums then it will work here, because it's frickin' annoying to read trough a topic (example: a Project one) where everything is scattered all over several pages.

Aaand now i know someone will post something like "Well read the whole topic then smartass/lazyass" and my answer to that is: Do i have the time? Nope.

How about for project threads and reviews having the original topic posted that only the original author(s) update and then a separate topic for comment. That way updates appear in chronological order, close together in the project/review topic and all the chatter is kept in another thread. Would require a bit of moderation to get it working smoothly, mostly deleting/moving chatter from the review/project threads. As a side bonus it wouldn't require extra plugins or the like to be installed.

Topics could then be setup by the original author of the review/project thread as.

"My uber l33t project/review."

"Comment: My uber l33t project/review."

With cross links between the two in the first post of each.

Noart: while I appreciate your frustration, your original post came across as somewhat obnoxious and certainly quite rude, so I must confess I am unsurprised Ed-Skar was abrupt in response. In future if you could words a request with a degree more diplomacy you might not garner such a vitriolic response. :)

Anyway, onto the main subject:

As Pablo said we were discussing the possibility of making some sections editable by the thread opener, but sadly this doesn't seem viable (that's what I meant in the first thread, should probably have been clearer), so sadly I'm afraid there's not a lot more to say to the matter for now, until I discover another approach or the software is updated to allow it. It's case of all or nothing, and opening up the whole forums to eternal edit certainly wouldn't be advisable given the popularity of our sales section, as it would give any potential fraudster carte blanche to walk all every regional variation of the Trade Description Act:

X: Here's my brand new still sealed WE M16. Perfect condition. £250 posted.

Y: WOW I'll take it! Here's the money!

X: Great. Here's your heavily skirmished TM M4A1, which is in need of some TLC. Oh, postage will be £30, please.

Y: What?!? But you said it was... (blah blah blah)

X: Huh? Well my sales thread says nothing of the sort!

Awesome premise, huh? :(

Anyway, the long and the short of it is that it's not possible at present. Should it become possible in the future we'll review the situation, decide if we think it's something that would benefit or ruin the forum, and decide appropriately how to implement it in some sections. Until then it's realy not a possibility, sorry.

If you want to discuss this further I'd advise contacting Arnie directly. Even though I'm an admin here, I still defer to Arnie on serious changes like this - I'm just the caretaker admin for the forum, if you like.

As this is more popular than I first anticipated I'll merge this with the somewhat rude original poster's comments on the subject, to keep things concise. :)

Chimpy: that idea's reasonable and a lot more viable. We'd have to sort out some suitable regualrs of that section to handle it, however. :)

I'd very much like the ability to edit my initial and subsequent posts in review and technical threads in which I am the original author. I say initial as well as subsequent posts as I almost never am able to get the entire review into one post due to the number of pictures usually involved. So perhaps either remove the limit of pictures per initial post in a review/technical thread or allow the initial author of a review/technical thread to be able to edit subsequent posts they make in that same review/technical thread?

Editing initial posts in review and or technical threads would be very helpful in keeping the most up to date info in one initial location rather than having to scour through several pages for the most current information.
