What happens with the media these days is generally they all buy stories from companies like BBC or AP. They can buy raw unedited data, prime data that they can clip or complete ready-to run stories. Its a lot cheaper than actually having proper reporters doing proper reporting.

Whats worse, as a side note, is that many newspapers now have their marketing staff in on meetings where they decide what to publish to ensure that their advertisers dont receive any negative publicity in their prints.

Edit:

Montana officer resigns over Facebook comments

(AP) – 4 days ago

BOZEMAN, Mont. — A Montana police officer who wrote on his Facebook page that there should be a law allowing police to take people to jail for being "stupid" has resigned.

Bozeman City Manager Chris Kukulski says Cody Anderson submitted his resignation Wednesday.

He says Anderson related that his resignation was in the best interest of the police department. Anderson apologized for his online comment last month, saying it didn't "reflect an attitude or atmosphere within the Bozeman police department."

His posting came to light last month when a Bozeman man filed a lawsuit against the city, Anderson and other officers, saying his civil and constitutional rights were violated when he was wrongly arrested.

The lawsuit alleges entries from Anderson's Facebook profile indicate he has a lack of respect for citizens' rights and a willingness to abuse his position of authority.

I read the comments that he posted. To me they merely indicate that he's human (he had vented his frustration with people asking him things like "Don't you have anything better to do?" and related on-the-job amusement by giving people stopped at red lights the "I know what you did" scowl).

And the City had some fun last month with Facebook in a completely different way, too: It came to light that certain city agencies were requiring social networking site and blog log-ins (including passwords) from potential hires.

Everyone that works anywhere in a customer facing capacity insults the people that they have to serve. It's part of dealing with the pressure of the job! The key is to keep it private though.

The problem here is that most people see social networking sites as a continuation of their private life but don't realise they are really discussing things in a very public medium. It's not the equivalent of going to the pub and mouthing off, it's the equivalent of printing up some billboards and posting them around the country. Like it or not things you would say to your buddies are not necessarily things you should say on Facebook or anywhere else online.

Even if you think you are anonymous like we are on here. You aren't. Don't act like people can't find out information about you. The more you post the easier it is.

My UOTC uses facebook for everything, I don't think I've ever received an email from them and you need to be in a few groups to know what is going on anyway. To be fair I think they tried to replace that system with MODnet or whatever but I think nobody bothered cause you need to have your blood type to sign up on the site...

I don't have anybody important from there on my facebook so my shenanigans are safe for the time being anyway.

Problem seems to have been so far (not sure which one it was last, somewhere south of me anyway) students from the student papers finding the pictures, putting them in their papers and then the national press getting hold of the stories.

Which OTC are you at Skarclaw, if you don't mind me asking.

I've cocked up on Facebook before. I had a half day booked a few Friday's ago for an interview and decided to go out for a few drinks after work on the Thursday. The few drinks turned into a good night out as I hit a the clubs with my mates (it was students night, therefore lots of cheap drinks ;)). I didn't get home unil 3am and really couldn't be arsed to go to work the next day with a hangover so I figured that as I had the afternoon booked I'd just call in sick. So I took the morning off and went to my interview in the afternoon (still a little tipsy).

Come Monday morning I walk through the office door and my boss is sat at her desk with her laptop staring me daggers. I go over and without a word she just points to the screen where theres a nice big picture of me with a bottle in one hand, a pint in the other and half a dozen shot's on the table in front, which a time stamp of 2:30am!

You can guess what happened next. Let's just say that I'm glad that I nailed the interview and got the job because I doubt I would have been at that place much longer.

Times on images prove nothing. I know people who purposely set their camera's date and times settings a number of days/weeks out.

I was also with the building manager in the photo and she knew he was out all night. Don't matter now though, I have a better paid job which I love.
