Daytonagun AKS-74

I’m not going to mention anything about the real steel history or about the box. If you really care, I’m sure it’s available in any of the other AK reviews here ;) .

I ordered the AK through Sparrow at OpForce Tactical Training solutions. (www.airsoftgasblowbacks.com). Sparrow and Justin (Daytonagun) teamed up to aid in distribution of these works of art to the US. You can order direct from the site or email Ian for specific information.

I ordered back in April when these were first announced at a discounted pre-order price. The “MSRP” is $800 + S&H from Hong Kong, and the pre-order price was $699 + S&H. Not too bad. Dealing with Sparrow through email was great. Although he couldn’t respond right away, he answered all of my questions.

When the package was sent—August 18th—I received email notification from Sparrow with a tracking number. It arrived safely, with a minor incident to test my sanity (too silly to go into detail here  ).

I noticed right away that there was some damage to the package from shipping:

Yep, that’s the charging handle.

Fortunately everything on this beauty is steel!

In the box

This is my first AK, so I am no expert the in externals of other models, but since it is based on the Kalash AKS-74, it is nearly identical to the AEG from which it was born. Some minor differences include shiny steel pins used to keep the internals in place…

P8060025.jpg

ooooo…shiny!

From the outside you can see the feed port, showing off some of the stainless internals.

P8060026.jpg

This thing is pretty weighty. It is approximately 5 kilos without bbs (not that they add THAT much weight).

Now on to the good stuff!!

Internals

When you open up the top cover, you discover lots of bling underneath. Full stainless steel internals replace that silly gearbox B)

P8060028.jpg

The spring guide and retainer-thingy (I know, it’s all very technical)

Spring guide removed

P8060030.jpg

This is the air-switch, connected to a 6mm tube coming out the bottom of the pistol grip.

P8060031.jpg

The bolt retracted.

P8060034.jpg

The bolt all the way forward. Notice the gas port of the bolt extends into the gas tube. There is a lot of steel moving back and forth on this thing…

A couple differences from happy.al’s Type 56:

-full steel internals

-Newly designed hopup for better consistency/longevity

-a little cheaper , sorry Al :money:

I will update this performance info after I give it a good thrashing on Thursday.

Absolutely beautiful, good to see that Justin has continued to improve the design, and yes, it’s more than a little cheaper than my version. My one is full steal internals too :) It was one of the 20 limited edition full steel versions that Justin did (it’s number 1 of 20)

Looking forward to seeing how the new hopup works, I also see he has improved on the collar again, makes it even less likely to slip.

Go to say that I love my version. It just works so well, it’s been the most reliable airsoft gun I’ve ever had. It’s also great fun to fire too, with a loud bark and a rhythm that could only be a AK.

Thanks for the correction, happy.al. I thought that run of AKs had some brass internals.

Ok, Field report:

Unfortunately, the chrono at my local shop (Weaponblender) was buried under mounds of gear after the large 2-day event they hosted last weekend, so no chrono results. But...

I am in love! The pure satisfaction of the recoil, sound and performance is amazing. I put about 1500 round through it today. I modded the mag catch to accept my MAG midcaps, but I think I still need to take of a hair more. There isn't a satisfying "click" yet. Also, the MAGs did not feed. BBs made it up the feed tube, but never quite made it to the chamber, so I was stuck using the hicap

I got a lot of comments about how awesome it sounded, as well as quite a few jaw-drops when I mentioned the price ($700 + S/H from HK)--many of them were first or second timers who thought the $150 they paid was a lot.

I didn't have a single jam, something that was always a problem with my Sun Project M16 (same blowback system).

Also, I didn't mess with the hop up at all, and was getting good range. I would say about what a good 350fps AEG would shoot. I would imagine that that is about what this is shooting.

Draco - Where are you located? Im in Layton!

TWO DG AK's in one place - Fantastic!

I chronoed my DG 105 and obtained 330 FPS with 100 PSI (CO2 at room temperature at WeaponBlender SLC). This is with the stock recoil spring - the high rate spring is currently on order from Sparrow and with it on 120 PSI should be shooting 390. The guns (as pictured) come with the entire mizzle brake caked in red paint. This was easily recitifed with a little bit of brake cleaner in my case. They also come with the standard Kalash mag seating problems - again easily cured.

The recoil is stout - and on par or better than a GHK. I won't say it is the same ammount of recoil as my real steel 5.45, but it is the closest thing I have felt in an airsoft gun.

The CYMA Ultimak I purchased at The WB was a breeze to install. Retro-Cow and I had it installed in about 2 mins of tinkering. I also modified a real steel grip so that I can have a proper thin AK grip. I intend for this to be a near exact clone of my real steel, and so far it is awesome.

I hope to see you on the field Draco!

I decided to go with an AKS-74 since I can have the long barrel for woodland and fold the stock for CQC.

MAN, I love this freakin' gun. I hook it up to my rig and dry-fire it multiple times throughout the day, just cause it's so damn fun. I've already spent my 20 oz Co2 tank (about 1/4 was left when the AK arrived) so I'm stuck just staring at this beautiful piece.

I ordered a plethora of accessories for the AK, since this is going to be my new primary skirmish gun.

BTW, do you guys know how to adjust the hop-up? There were no instructions or anything in the box.

Also, what kind of recoil springs do DG/Sparrow offer? Are there any other things they sell for it other than hopup buckings?

Oh yeah, I was running at 120psi.

Horse: I'm in Provo. I don't get to go to too many Saturday games because of work, but when I do, I usually play with TAC-4.

gamefreak: The hop is adjusted via a 1.5mm set screw. It is on the top of the chamber. Take of the top cover and pull the bolt back. There is a little hole in the top of the bolt and in the gas tube that will allow you to adjust the hop. Make sure you do it in small incriments (like 1/8th turns), otherwise you may do too much at once and tear up the hop rubber.

edit: I removed my orange with brake fulid. It took off some of the black finish too, but gives it a more used look. I'll get some pictures up later today.

I played again, this time with the MAGs. They still aren't feeding 100%. I don't know if I need to take more off, or what. It seems like they are just a hair too tight, because when I put pressure on the mag (down, left, right, or back) then I can hear the bbs shoot up the feed tube. I must need to take off little more from the catch...

I have a set of MAG midcaps, as well. They had an issue feeding at first. It seemed like the feed tube wasn't depressing the BB stay hard enough to disengage it. I took a look at the feed tube and realized that it was wobbling. So, I was fiddling with it and realized that it's just a small metal tube that's threaded into the hopup assembly, thus not being one whole piece as I had imagined. After tightening the feed tube, the MAG midcaps feed and fit very well for me.

So, what kind of range are you guys getting at ~1J with this new hopup?

I read on ca.org that it was not sufficient to really create backspin for heavier BB's, like .28g and suck, is this true for yours too?

I have Daytona working on a 416 for me (it's been delayed, but it's getting there) and I'd really like to use .3's in it like with my AEG's and Shoei MG, or .25 if I really have to. But having to stick to .2's is not really desirable for me...

Well, damn, I use .28 BBs. I'm going to a game in another week and a half so I should have some experience with the hop and .28 soon enough.

I'm going to a game on Sat and plan on trying .2's .25's and .3's.

I will post results.

I finally got my MAG brand mids to feed correctly - it took a hand file and CAREFUL filing of the latch to even it out accross the latch and bring it down a smidge more. The 2 I tried yesterday fed like champs on both single and FA.

Just got back from the range.

Full bottle of CO2, 120psi, about 80*F

60 feet

7 1/2 inch target.

Airsoft Elite .25g and Matrix .25g

The AEs were causing the gun to stall a lot. It was chopping almost every other bb.

I switched to the Matrix bbs, and everything was fine again.

Unfortunately, I think the hop might have a tear in it from one of the chopped bb fragments, because I was getting a lot of random fly-away bbs. I will tear the gun down later tonight.

On semi, taking less than one second between shots, I shot 12 rounds. The result was all of the bbs landing in a 4"x4" area. Not bad. I then adjusted the hop a little more and tested range. I could reach 140' easily, and they were still dropping off. A little more hop and I am sure 180+ is completely reasonable.

I don't have a chrono, so I can't give FPS results. At 60', the bbs were going through one side of the box I was shooting at and embedding into the other. I don't know what that means :P

The MAG mags are still not 100% but they are almost there.

  • 2 weeks later...

So, I attempted to skirmish yesterday with the DG AK. After about an hour of skirmishing, a BB shattered in the chamber and the gun would not fire. Anyone know how to disassemble this gun? I'm afraid to just jump in on my own.

Also, my MAG midcaps were not feeding as well as I had thought. Maybe 1 of them feeds at all. Where do you guys shave them down? Someone told me to shave down the sides, then someone else said the mag catch, while a 3rd person told me to shave down a part on the mag itself. Mucho confusing. When I tested the midcaps, I had just tested that 1 mag that seems to feed at all and that was on a short burst and semi-auto.

I was very disappointed in having to sit out the rest of the game due to the fact that I didn't know how to disassemble the gun to fix it. Oh well, I'm sure it'll be an awesome gun once I get it sorted out.

Lastly, The gun seems to top out at ~350 FPS at 140 PSI. Any way I can get it to 400 FPS without voiding the 140 PSI warranty limit?

Thanks in advance for any and all help, guys.

Hello,

There is a full takedown guide on Classicairsoft, if you are not a member yet I would suggest that you join their ASAP, as it's the best resource for all types of classic airsoft guns.

http://classicairsoft.org/forum/viewtopic....=50&t=11222

I had to shave a little from my mags. I took some material off the mag where it engages the mag catch. You should be able to see it when you insert the mag into the gun, see how much you will need to take off.

The last point, about fps, I can help you with. On the Escort style guns, the max fps is controlled by the spring, not the input PSI. You have reached the limit of your spring. Sparrow sells upgrade springs which should take your fps nearer to the 400 mark.

Thanks a ton, happy.al. I'm going to dig into it tonight and see how everything is inside. I'm assuming there's a tear in the hop rubber, since there were some extreme fly-aways right before the BB shattered. I'm assuming another BB shattered before that one and did some damage.

I'm stuck....

I was disassembling the AK, trying to clear the chamber with the smashed BB as well as install a tightbore, but I can't for the life of me get past this part:

IMAG0030.jpg

How do I get the hop-up housing off?! I removed the hop-up adjustment screw as well as 2 set screws on either side of the assembly, but nothing happens after that. I can't twist or pull it off.
