amateurstuntman
The Thales Lucie night vision goggle has been adopted by the UK's plant operators for night driving and digging. Despite the fact that is is a mono vision system and the dual Monie system is designed for driving and doing tasks that require a better depth perception we haven't got that system. Can't think why. Oh yes. Money, all the feedback so far is that depth perception is a problem but why bother sending people out to war with the right gear? The wrong gear will still look cool and make the papers leave them alone. http://www.angenieux.fr/index.php?rub=31&art=61 I am going to be teaching the use of the system and I have received a "train the trainer" package from a guy who had never seen the equipment until the day before he taught me. I had a few questions for him but he was unable to answer them or put me in contact with anyone who could answer them. So, here are the questions. 1) What does Lucie stand for, if anything? It's not as important as operation or care but if I get asked by a student and can't answer I'm going to look like a knob. In the technical specs it says the objective lens can be fitted with a cover that has a "central ND filter" this is a little hole in the cover with a piece of dark glass so that you can use the goggle in daylight. You put the cover over the lens and the little hole cuts out most of the light and the tube isn't overloaded. 2) What does ND stand for in this context? Same reason, I just need to be able to put together a lesson plan. Thanks for looking guys...
amateurstuntman
Hang on. I found what ND stands for: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neutral_density_filter I had all my searches in strings that were inclusive of <+night +vision> or <+thales +lucie> my last search of just <"nd filter"> pulled it up. Now I just need to know what (if anything) Lucie stands for.

In camera speak a ND filter is Neutral Density and LUCIE = Light and compact intensifier goggle according to their website...http://www.thalesgroup.com/Portfolio/Defence/LandJoint_Products_Mobility_NightVisionGoggles/
amateurstuntman
So it's an acronym that isn't even an acronym. Light and (U?) Compact Intensifier GogglE Unless it's in French? LUnettes Compact Intensifier Équipements? Bah. Bloody Thales. Thanks Eng.
Corrigan
No, that's probably not what it stands for. Here is the full paragraph: - MINIE - Light and compact Intensifier goggle with data display - LUCIE - Light and compact intensifier goggle - MONIE - Monocular intensifier equipment See what I mean? amateurstuntman
Yeah. All the best types of night vision equipment have girls' names. That way you can say you were stalking Kylie with Lucie...
