A US Marine with his M14

A quick history on the M14 courtesy of wikipedia:

The M14 rifle, formally the United States Rifle, Caliber 7.62 mm, M14, is an American selective fire automatic rifle firing 7.62x51mm NATO ammunition. It was the standard issue US rifle until 1970. The M14 was used for US Army and Marine Corps basic and advanced individual training, and was the standard issue infantry rifle in CONUS, Europe, and South Korea, until replaced by the M16 rifle in 1970. It remains in limited front line service with the United States Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard, and remains in use as a ceremonial weapon. The M14 also provides the basis for the M21 and M25 sniper rifles. It was the last so-called "battle rifle" (a term applied to weapons firing full-power rifle ammunition) issued in quantity to U.S. troops.

Now, I bought this rifle because I was always obsessed with range but was driven mad when I fired my L96 and would miss the target by a cm for them to then turn around and spray. And I had heard plenty of good things about the M14 even from stock so I decided to get one for myself. Luckily I was able to pick one up second hand for a reasonable price.

Ok, so when I collected my M14 it came in the original box and was neatly packaged.

Inside the box was:

TM M14

1x 70 round Low cap

1x Loading rod

1x Cleaning rod

Small Bag of bbs

All of this was neatly mounted on a black cloth background over Styrofoam.

On picking up the rifle it is very solid and well constructed with Tokyo Marui trade marks on it and adjustable iron sights. The only slight annoyance for me was that I find the front heat shield creaks slightly as it is made out of low quality plastic. The stock can hold a large type 8.4v battery and has a flip up base which holds the rifle in your shoulder.

So working from the front of the rifle back it has one of the longest flash hiders I have ever seen which adds to the length of this rifle.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm192/S...an/PA180053.jpg

It has a one piece outer barrel and the hop up is located on the underside of the rifle and clicks into place so you can adjust it quickly and accurately and don't need to worry about it moving during a skirmish.

The safety for this rifle is located in front of the trigger and just needs to be pushed forward before you can fire.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm192/S...an/PA180037.jpg

The selector switch is on the right hand side of the rifle but has been removed in this picture as my rifle is locked to semi.

Then the iron sights can be adjusted for windage and elevation by a considerable amount so that you don't need to have optics for this rifle although personally I find the rear iron sight slightly narrow and prefer to have a red dot or scope mounted.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm192/S...an/PA180050.jpg

The grip is then textured and feels sturdy and comfortable under your hand (this is only on the O.D Version)

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm192/S...an/PA180036.jpg

Then moving to the stock, it has a flip up peice at the back which sits on top of your shoulder so even at the end of a skirmish its easy to hold it up.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm192/S...an/PA180041.jpg

Then behind this peice there is the battery compartment, it is able to take a large type 8.4v battery but it can be difficult, I find that the easiest way to get the battery in is to pull the wire and fuse all the way out, put the battery in and they place the wiring on top. But this can mean that a rapid battery change is an issue. At the moment I have opted for a 9.6v crane stock battery which slides in perfectly on top of the fuse.

Then finally, just behind the rear iron sight there are the trade marks which read:

U.S. RIFLE / 7.62-MM M14 / SPRINGFIELD ARMOURY and then a unique serial number below that.

The fps of this rifle when you get it stock will be at 280fps which is a bit low for most sites so you may want to get that upgraded and it also doesn't come with a battery so that will need to be bought separately. But this is all made up for when you rack the bolt back and let it go .

At stock level this is a decent rifle which is very accurate, has a decent rate of fire and good attention to detail, although it does need the fps upgrading. They are also quite pricey at £330 in the UK

So its final scores at stock level are:

Looks: 85%

Build Quality: 85%

Firing (as stock): 80% (Due to low fps)

Upgrade ability: 90%

Price:70%

Overall I would give this gun 9/10, its a great rifle

The M14 can be upgraded to a great extent as I have done with amazing performance. I will list the new parts fitted to my rifle and then go over its results and groupings at 10, 20 and 30 metres.

At the moment my M14 is firing at 425fps and has the following parts added.

External:

Scope Mount

Bushnell 2-6x32 red and green illuminated sight.

G&P Aimpoint

Deep Fire Metal Heatsheild

So all that is left inside is the original TM hop unit. This is probably close to if not as good as your going to get the M14, but the grouping might be a little tighter with a 6.01 or a systema FTK instead of guarder but I'm happy with mine.

Ok, now on to the shooting. I decided to use the aimpoint for this as it wasn't over a huge distance. and was firing from prone using a support to make sure the rifle didn't sway. I was also using 0.28g Madbull bbs

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm192/S...an/PA180026.jpg

Note that before each distance I zeroed the scope and hop. The target was 14cm x 14cm and there was a 3-4mph wind across the direction I was firing in.

So at 10m the rifle was very consistent as I had hoped with a grouping of 2.5cm with 5 rounds every time.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm192/S...an/PA180031.jpg

When I was satisfied with this I moved the target back to 20m.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm192/S...an/PA180027.jpg

After zeroing the aimpoint for this distance I decided to conduct 2 groupings of 5 rounds each. The first lot gave a grouping of 6.5cm

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm192/S...an/PA180032.jpg

Whilst the second gave a grouping of 7cm although both grouping were slightly up and to the right of the centre of the target, this may have been to do with the wind.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm192/S...an/PA180033.jpg

Then I thought it would be a good idea to test the rifle at 30m as this is what its minimum engagement distance is. So after moving the shooting position so I had more room and the wind was then behind me I fired 10 rounds at one target so you could see the spread more easily. 9 rounds hit the target and 1 was a flyer. But with those 9 rounds they had an overall grouping of 10.5cm

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm192/S...an/PA180054.jpg

Quick summary of results

Distance Spread

10m 2.5cm

20m 6.5-7cm

30m 10.5cm

Overall I am very pleased with this rifle and with the right upgrades it can be the perfect sniper. And still get you those perfect head shots 9 times out of 10. 10/10

Good review, although the barrel is not a true "one peice" barrel. the part that holds it into the reciever is not attached to the barrel permanetly, but is held in by four screws. Not a true one peice but relatively stable. Considering the rest of the barrel is supported by the long stock, it's not as much of an issue as it would be for an AR type gun.

And 111849 is the same serial that I had on mine, as well as many others :(

I actually went back and read my original TM M14 review... I was such a noob back then, I couldnt even spell Accuracy =|

Those results are very impressive indeed. But do keep in mind that those grouping can only be achieved if you use semi.

Full auto would throw things off quite a bit since the inner barrel so long and you will get lots of vibrations from the inner barrel against the metal outer barrel.

An easy way to eliminate this problem is by dampening the vibrations with teflon tape. Just tape sections of the barrel so that when you put slide the inner barrel in, the fit should be absolutely tight, no wobble. Make sure the sections of tape are NOT spaced evenly along the length of the barrel. If you space them evenly, you will create vibration nodes, and actually amplify the vibration.

2 more tips:

1. Wash your hopup rubber with warm soap water, then rinse with cold bottled mineral water (has to be mineral, regular distilled water will not take the soap off). Dry, and reinstall.

2. The Guarder air nozzle is plastic if I am not mistaken. Plastic air nozzles will leak some air when inserted into the hopup chamber. Upgrade to a metal air nozzle. I can almost guarantee you that you will have more consistent and higher FPS and thus better accuracy.
