The scout mount is built to fit over the stock outer barrel. The short one is thicker (looking at the provided photo, stock outer barrel diameter is shown at top right where the tube mounts inside the trunion). The wood stock looks fantastic on it, and gives it more of a "Ranch gun" look. I think it looks great without the aimpoint actually, it still keeps the smooth, sleek lines of the M14 that way.
