News section - Restrict retailers

Recommended Posts

Just in the last week or so it seems that a couple of the big retailers have started putting threads up in News announcing sales etc, much as I don't want to hurt anybody's business, I think if this is allowed to continue it'll quite likely grow and increase in rate to the point where that whole section is just a big mess of capital letters and "buy our stuff!!!!".

All these types of purely commercial items had been limited to the news front page in the past which I believe is where they should stay in honesty The good thing about the news section of the forum is that pretty much everybody knows it is only to be used for posting of significant new product releases and developments within the community. This keeps it interesting and sustains a high quality standard in the section, which will obviously help to maintain traffic to (what I find to be) a very good part of the forum overall. I think it'd be ruined very quickly if the various retailers are allowed to do whatever they please.

Can't be certain everyone will agree with me of course, but from seeing the news sections of other forums where it's happened.. well it doesn't benefit the members. Especially some of the HK stores that purely stock ACM goods, they tend to be a lot more invasive and persistent with their self-promotion.

As a starting point I'd suggest if you see posts which are not announcing something new but simply 'we have x back in stock' being made, report them and we will aim to take down. If after that the consensus is that the news section is still being abused, I'll start to tighten up posting restrictions.

I'm apprehensive to initiate a heavy-handed lockdown immediately as many smaller commercial organisations (usually the one-man businesses which are highly specialised) find it much more preferable to post in the news section where they can offer more personable responses to queries. I'll happily take the counsel and views of everyone on the matter though - if nobody bothers with news as they see it as just a spam section then it'll be redundant anyway.

Thanks. :)

The small guys I'm fine with, like if a member has started making custom mag pouches or the sorts of things Rob15 does, they tend to be more reasonable in their methods of advertising anyway. Also they really deserve the extra business from other members

I don't think redwolf or ehobby really need to be advertising with forum threads though, they're big, well-established businesses already and I don't think it's fair on the little guys to have the big players over-shadowing them.

 Also as a rule I only post new threads in the news section if I have a new product on the way or released since that's what the news section is intended for, any offers and such I post in the existing thread of the product in question.

If retailers want to post threads advertising sales, new stock etc they should be doing it in their own subforums although as Marlowe quite rightly said the retailer subforums are pretty much unused generally, nearly 1/3 of them have just been identified as inactive again and will be cleared out once time is available for it and I'm not aware of any that were removed a while ago re-requesting them to be setup again so it doesn't seem like they miss them....
