bankz5152
I practiced by making some fun shapes from some aluminium. Made all kinds of odd things..
renegadecow
Done with most of the inlay and nearly done on one side of the grip checkering. Lots of problems with checkering particularly when I hit a large-ish fiber the whole diamond comes off and requires patching with more brown goop using finer sawdust. TerranCmdr
Wow, really fantastic detailing. BTW, that grip totally looks like a Star Trek emblem.
TnL
BTW, that grip totally looks like a Star Trek emblem. Beam me up, Remington! And as was said, amazing detailing work
renegadecow
BTW, that grip totally looks like a Star Trek emblem. Indeed it does. However the XP came out in 63 while Star Trek first aired in 66.
jimmiroquai
That's some fiiiine work! Amazing!
renegadecow
Thanks! Moving on to staining now with a first coat of walnut. Will give it a second coat of mahogany to get it the right reddish tinge and add a bit of swirly touches. edit: I'll also be needing some snazzy looking retro holster for this, Raybans, sideburns, and a turtleneck sweater. My neighbor has a 69 Ford Mercury Cougar I could probably sneak to and get pictures with.
vergerdaf
I'm glad you're making good progress, my phones being poopy and won't load the pictures. Can't wait to see them
renegadecow
Ugh. Can't sleep so I did the mahogany stain and blackened the tip.
PureSilver
Looking good. How're you planning to do the white inlays? Paint?

renegadecow
white inlays? I've already cut out inserts from a plastic folder. Will glue them on before applying gloss lacquer.
GlockworkOrange
Looks great, can't wait to see this finished.
Kalashnikov_kid
great work dude
renegadecow
Kinda goofed a bit. After gluing in the inlay I decided to rub the sanding sealer on instead of brushing. This unfortunately picked up some of the wood stain making for a more marbleized color than I wanted. So I'm thrown back by at least a step, lightly sanded everything and reapplied wood stain for a more uniform color. While I wait for that to dry thoroughly before clear coat, I'll be working on modifying the rail mount to have a cutout (no real sense forking up $40 for the Laylax one) and proceed to painting the barrel. Trigger guard and magazine cover will have to come last. *images taken before applying sanding sealer

PureSilver
Looking VERY good. Doesn't have that nasty plastic shine the RS has just yet, but I imagine that'll come with the sealer?
Kenworth W900
Yeah, was thinking that it doesn't have that crazy shine yet and looks better for it. Personally, I would sacrifice a little realism for some extra awesome - I'd have it shinier than at present but not the full-gloss lacquer like the real-steel.
renegadecow
But, but I like that crazy gloss. Cheesy and swanky at the same time. Anyways, the sealer was just to fill in small nicks and scratches I failed to sand out. Problem was it's too strong and affects the finish. If I try and brush it on it's gonna get to thick in some ares I don't want it to fill in. With that I've started spraying it with clear lacquer and I'll need to fill in those little pits manually by lightly sanding the lacquer and going over it again for about 3 coats. renegadecow
Well they bloody owe me money which I was to spend on a shiny new motorcycle, so yeah. Now I have to break my back selling wooden ponies to get back the cash for it. edit: Really, that was just an honest typo. What you get trying to type with one hand, hold a cup of hot cocoa in the other while biting on a bagel.
