ardrummer292
I've had reasonably good luck with Darn Tough socks. My SmartWool socks have all worn out after a couple months of use. US GI-issue wool socks, while cheap and hard-wearing, are too thin to provide any reasonable amount of insulation. I'm going to try RedHead Lifetime Guarantee socks from Bass Pro Shops, for the lifetime warranty if nothing else.
Dentonboy
I wear Ulvang merino wool socks (I paid £6 for 6 pairs on eBay) if it is dry - and SealSkinz 'Military issued' socks if it is wet. Fed up of cold and/or wet feet!
Revengeful_Lobster
Standard issue socks for me. Got 'em free with a purchase above __ at a local surplus shop.
Mike 8-{>
Aldi hiking socks and fishing socks. Dirt cheap and same cotton/tactel(lycra?) outer/inner sock construction as 1000mile socks. Seasonal availability but at something like gbp2.95 a pair can't go wrong. The fishing socks are in camo-ish browns and greens too if it matters. Wear them all the time last for ages.
BigAl
Another vote for the Smartwool Merino socks here, discovered them in the The *fruitcage* Face shop in Stratford whole working on the Olympics. Still wearing some of those same socks know, been machine washed all there life no problem.

ardrummer292
I had a couple pairs of the Fox River socks. They didn't last too long (about as long as my Smart Wools), so about 2-3 months of regular use with occasional skirmishing.
