HELP NEED to replace ICS L85 Piston and Gears

Hi

I need some technical help with my ICS L85.  Since I bought (second hand) a ICS L85 I have had nothing but problems with it!

The latest issue, that when I test fired the AEG on Tuesday the end of the piston snapped off (the opposite end of the piston head). The thick end tooth and a bit of the piston.

So, I need a new piston and I might as well replace the gears.

Now after searching the internet and even sending an email to ICS (no reply received) I am no closer in knowing what piston I should get.

eHobby Asia recommended 19 tooth piston and gears set upgrade for a R85.  I pointed out the piston in the ICS L85 is 15 (half-teeth) piston.

So, can anyone help me?  Which piston and gear set should I get?

Regards

Robert

My ICS L86 has eaten 3 pistons so far.

I've finally used the ICS re-enforced piston, but due to the way the gears are aligned I had to cut away at the teeth to give clearance for the spur gear, took about 30seconds with a craft drill. It's been going strong far longer than any other piston so I'm hoping that's a permanent fix now.

The gears are standard type gears. The GnG/Army saties do use different gears, but that is a completely different design to the ICS.

Email from ICS:

Dear Robert,

Thank you for your support to ICS.

For the gear set, you will need MC-14 Orignial Gear Set.

You may find on Firesupport’s website:

http://www.fire-support.co.uk/product/ics-gear-set-for-version-2--version-3

For the piston, you may use MC-01 Original Piston. You may find on Firesupport’s website: http://www.fire-support.co.uk/product/ics-plastic-piston-suitable-for-all-ics-aegs-inc-l85

For other parts, please refer to ICS’s catalogue:

Would you like us to pass your contact information to Firesupport?

Thank you.

Kind Regards,

From memory there is a 1-2mm difference in length between a stock ICS piston and TM spec (I used to see a lot of pick up tooth wear from preengagement putting anything other than ICS pistons in ICS guns). It looks like you had failure of the pick up tooth owing to the lack of material around it (I'm assuming that's an SHS piston).

Get yourself a TM piston (SHS 3 steel tooth, Lonex Blue/Red also acceptable depending on budget/availability), file down the first tooth after the pick up tooth, put the cylinder+cylinder head into the gearbox, install piston assembly (piston+piston head to be clear), install sector gear and check at what angle the first tooth of the sector and pick up tooth on the piston meet at (google/youtube angle of engagement. If all good (they meet flat or near as, crack on with reassembly.

Gears wise you can throw any V2/V3 gearset in there (I have KA standard ratio gears and a TM EG1000 short shaft motor) - ICS I believe have finally sorted out their pinion gears to be less retarded.

If you have standard gears there is no requirement for the half tooth piston set up, these are only required for double/triple torque sector gears/sets.
