Your 1st hand experiences with the WE Scar L&H

Got a couple of Ls and some Hs at the workshop. They are solid performers and super reliable, if you take care to fine-tune them as follows:

You'll see some reports of miss feeds, broken nozzles, failure to lock the bolt, poor performance and everything between... but 99% of the times all of those issues are caused by rattling magazines. The good news is that the only required mod is shimming of the mag well, sometimes a layer or 2 of tape, sometimes gluing a plastic piece to it.
Just make sure to do that if necessary and avoid over-loading the mags, and they'll be good to go forever.

Here's a vid on the issue

There are all sorts of aluminum and steel internal "upgrades" for it, but imho they only masks the real problem that is the one described above, and usually introduce a whole new array of problems if the initial issue is not addressed. So I would  stay away from them.

They shoot great just out of the box, but if you want the ultimate performance I'd install a Maple Leaf combo (6.02 inner barrel, Autobot 70º bucking, concave hop tensioner). Depending on your field rules it might be overpowered, specially if you follow those precision upgrades; so if a power downgrade is needed, go for FG-Airsoft's LFS discs and it will keep consistency.

All in all, a great platform if you do your part.

What Dimitri said is about it. Basically:

The gun will work pretty much indefinitely so long as:

- Stabilise the magazine well

- Loctite the screws which hold the bolt carrier to the cocking piece.  That will prevent the cocking piece from breaking at the rear.

- Loctite the the bushings that guide the cocking piece onto the top of the receiver.

There is only 2 critical points where the SCARs where it requires modification.

- Rear stock plate.  The rubber buffer is too hard and the stock plate can break if fired without the stock extended.  It cracks at the edges and also in the metal that holds the stock plate.  You can either buy reinforced parts OR you can soften the rubber buffer on the spring guide by swiss cheesing it with a drill bit.

- The screws that hold the barrel to the receiver.  Over years they will bend and deform from the impact.  You can replace with a bigger screw and rethreading them for the trunion.  Changing this out to 1mm thicker screw will make it last indefinitely.

Other note

- If the nozzle or bolt carrier breaks you can keep it working with stock nozzles and bolt carriers, do not upgrade to RA tech steel BCG or nozzles as you are asking for trouble.

- New hop rubbers will improve accuracy

- Steel triggers are good but not required until stock parts are worn.

- Can polish the bolt carrier for better cycling.

As above. Though I would add when the internal parts fail replace with standard WE bits, it will just keep working. I have found through (10+) WE GBBRs that the steel 'upgrades' tend to make everything worse where as fitting standard bits back saved me a fortune and kept it running for another 10k.

Make sure you buy the V3 split design magazines too (L version only), determined by a large phillips screw under the base plate.

I'll add my two cents:

What "V3" AR15 magazines meant for me is they have a small philips screw locking the mag lip assembly, preventing blow-outs in earlier versions. Just like the ones on SCAR H magazines.

And you really won't need "upgrades" in WE SCARs, do this mod instead and you'll be fine for years.

Hi All, thank you so much for your very informative and helpful replies, i will take them on all board and carry on doing research until the time comes, if i do buy one its not going to be until mid next year anyway, they are not cheap so i would have to save up lol, but the other problem im having is to i buy a scar or a well needed new 20 gauge shot gun..

If i buy the WE scar i will not be skirmishing with it, i would just be taking it to gun club for some fun fast action plinking and ipas sytle shooting too.

You guy have giving me a lot to think about, at christmas i will go back to one of my local gun shops and see if i can test one out as well, i must admit im leaning more towards the L because its nearly £100 cheaper. But time will tell..

I look forward to seeing some more very helpful replies to, thanks again.

Hi mate been looking closely at your pictures but can't really tell what your mod was? Could you please explain what you did?

Just switch out the screws for shorter ones, stock torx screws are tend to bend under stress from each shot you fired, causing whole chamber and barrel assembly to shift forward.

thank you mate. :)

to be honest im still in two minds about the rifle, im so used to having a big collection of reliable guns and if i get one thats not reliable i tend to get rid of it, and the more i research into the scar there seems to be a lot of problems with then and not seen one person yet saying theres has been fine, its a shame really WE has not properly addressed and fixed with issues as the scar's have been out for long enough to do so, im not a WE hatter or nothing its just a big shame.

But i dont want to buy a scar for £300 get sick of always replacing parts and then sell it a few months later for half the price, its too expensive to do that. I have seen reports that the nozzle bhas been breaking after every game/use, but as said above that could be down to the magazine not seating properly and is quite an easy fix..

lol im just  quite fussy and am unsure if i should go for it or not, ill not be using the scar that much to be honest, i would not be skirmishing with it i would just be taking it to gun club for so fast action shooting, plinking, fun target shooting and a bit of IPAS sytle shooting, so it would only be used about once a month and would see around 600 - 1000 rounds max at a time. As i like to use all my guns in my collection so i have to alternate between guns.

but to be honest there is no other assualt rifle on the market that takes my fancy, so its either this one or none. lol, i think a bit of thinking to do dont i..

You're getting it wrong. As we said before, just make sure you don't have rattle in your mag well, and this thing will probably outlast humanity.

Most of the problems people complain of are either derivatives from the alignment issue (which BTW is not present in all guns), the bad decisions people made trying to fix it (like going RA-Tech), or simply user errors. If I had a dime for every idiot breaking AR safeties trying to engage it without cocking the gun, or for any broken hammer and springs in AKs from people trying to charge it with the safety on, I'll probably have some more WE GBBRs.

I repaired and refurbished 5 WE SCAR-L and 2 WE SCAR-H. I had the following experiences:

WE SCAR-L, closed-bolt
- trigger box was weak because the firing-pin delayer was really weak, it often break appart

- the hopup unit not very effective, with Falcon VS-Z set it work great

- the gun was much more long-lasting if you have jams or miss-feeds

- the BBs often damaged or get scratches on the surface thanks the copper inner hopup chamber

- stock hinge is really weak, even with green gas

- stock-lenght locking button often don't hold its setup

- stock hinge locking button often break appart

- gas consumption is really-reaaly poor

- it looks like an Escort, old-school airsoftgun - not really realistic

- lot trouble with Gen1 magazines (leaking problems)

- weak bolt catch spring, it work randomly

WE SCAR-L, OB V1

- weak firing-pin delayer here (too), the FCG is the same as in the closed-bolt version

- the new hopup system is much better (better kick, better gas consumption, better colddown issue)

- stock lenght often can not keep its setup and the stock hinge locking button also often breaks

- stock hinge often break appart - haven't any rubber buffer yet

- with aluminium hinge the upper-stock parts break (imediatelly with CO2 mags)

- the new nozzle is really good, it keep really well the jams or the miss-feeds

- nozzle spring is often really weak, need to replace it

- the gen2 hopup system has really poor quality hopup rubber - need to replace it imediatelly (Modify TAN)

- I saw trigger breaks often (2-times)

- it has a lot trouble if the owner mixed the components (RAT bolt with TSC FCG parts, etc)

WE SCAR, OB V2

- finally it has rubber buffer at the recoil spring guide

- it has potmetal gaspiston on the bolt carrier (too as the OB V1)

- the bolt catch spring is weak in this series too

- stock hinge is reinforced but it breaks often

- firing-pin delayer is reinforced with steel insert

- the stock finally keeps its lenght-setup

- stock hinge locking button weak too

- the new V2 magazine lost its leaking-issues but it freezing much faster as the old design - tanks for one-chamber gastank

WE SCAR, OB V3

- the gas piston is replaced to an aluminium one (stock hinge breaking gone, better gas consumption, better coldown issues, better RoF)

- the piring-pin is reinforced with steel insert

- now the bolt catch spring is to strong - often don't work properly

WE SCAR, OB V4

- it has a new (shortened window) inner barrel and hopup rubber (it often can not hop over .25 BBs)

- it has much stronger nozzle-spring

WE SCAR-H

- it has shotened inner barrel with the new (trash-quality) hopup rubber

- the auto-sear bar holder often breaks (here is the drop-in replacement designed by myself: https://www.shapeways.com/product/XSM8J4TWJ/we-auto-sear-holder-v1-3?optionId=58880653)

- the magazine can not fixed in the lower receiver perfectly (magazine has a loot wooble, it can not feed perfectly, fixed with epoxy or with rubber insert)

- the gun has amazing good sound when it's working

- the new magazine seems to be really good and thanks the bigger gastank it can keep the colddown issues better (or you can use it in colder weather as the L-series)

SCAR-H is a bit problematic out-of-box but I think it better. The whoole SCAR-line is really realible, you need to fix the hopup issues (replacing hopup rubber, replacing nozzle-spring) and downgrade if you need it. The other parts can keep the using for years without big problems. Don't forget the WE GBBR basic rules, don't replace the FCG parts without any malfunction. Check the gaspiston holding screw after every game, clean the gun and use good quality BBs (as heavy as heavy the hopup unit can hop).

The other thing is not flustrating but you need to calculate with this issues:

- The outer barrel - upper receiver has a potmetal part which hold this two parts together. The gun owners often overtighten the screw that is why the screw thread it killed.

- Always push the stock hinge locker button when you close-open the stock.

- Always clean the barrel.

- If you have budget, replace the inner barrel. Nowdays the inner barrels much more worst as the older guns. The new hopup system is a big downfall.

- Use only quality hopup rubber - check it, always. Load BBs into the chamber, rack the bolt few times and after that keep the bolt at opened position, than raise the gun's muzzle to the sky and check the hopup rubber keeps the BB inside. If the BB can fall out, replace the rubber to a better one.

- Don't replace the FCG parts if your gun don't have broken part or malfunction.

- Check your FCG-parts, if you have the old firing-pin (without steel insert) replace it imediatelly!

- Steel bolt is long-lasting but it can break the stock hinge and it has worst gas consumption as the stock one!

- The stock bolt is good, just check the steel insert every year - if needed, replace it.

- Replace the magazine's bolt catch parts to a steel one - they often wear out.

- Sometime you need to add few epoxy to the bolt catch to work properly.

- Sometimes the bolt catch spring is too weak or too strong.

- etc, etc, etc

My teammate's SCAR that was bought a couple of months ago had some problems, I would put blue loctite on the nozzle guide screws right away.

The upper nozzle guide screws came loose and the movement of the nozzle guide caused the threads to strip.

If you buy a RA-Tech steel bolt to replace it, de-burr the edges of the nozzle cavity or else it will eat the nozzle o-ring after a couple of shots. The RA-Tech steel bolt requires fitting for the upper nozzle guide, this may be a good thing as it allows a very tight fitment of the nozzle guide.

ATB, Marc..

No you don't need to do more thinking.  You are Overthinking.

If you want it, get it, learn from it.  Reliability is like trust: picking a good platform construction is important, but it requires work to build trust.  Once you know the limitations of a platform you work to adapt to it and make it effective.

The SCAR is as robust as you can get so long as you can "tune once, and don't tweak again".
