Murdoc
Hi there! Before responding anything... this project started two years ago, when I bought my JG SA58... No sure plan of future Ares L1A1 existed that time (as I know...). On the other side I wont ever spend 500 USD on that... plus the woodparts... So that's all started with that: Then I added a CASV (I liked the half retro-half modern long L1A1 idea, but wanted a half CASV-half wood shortie instead): Now I'm at this point: The main target (beside wood-RAS version) is this (but also with short handguard and no foregrip, or both... I don't know at the moment): I'm great Vietnam ANZAC-fan, and it will be the pair of my M14: In the afternoon I'll post the how-to pictures...
Murdoc
The butt-end-plate and the caps of the handguard are casted from zinc: The FAL-L1A1 stock adapter is made from two "L"-shaped aluminium parts: Trigger guard fully custom made: The rear sling mount is the original FAL one, but has a custom cilindical root... The front grip is simply fixed on a cheapo ACM barrel rail: Forward assist (?) already modified: All woodparts are custom made from hickory. No stain will be applied, just lindseen oil and, if finished, beeswax... Future plans: -L1A1 rear sight (King Arms, in transit from frien in NZ) -custom, 3 mm higher front sight -custom or Ares fire selector (Ares must be modified, to be able to work) -custom or Ares flash hinder (this looks similar to the photo, but looks ugly IMO) -custom charging handle -custom top cover -cutsom magazine catch -custom bolt catch-release -front hanguard (half finished, I'll use it with or without the foregrip)
Gunnman
I love it, really nice! Good job on the cast parts.
Murdoc
Handguard on the finish line: There will be front grip (full auto VC buster), or handguard (general SAS shortie).
Murdoc
Painted... And oiled:
chas
Looks really cool, but I would lose the optic and rail.
Murdoc
Rail: of course no rail! I planned simple retro top cover... Optic: no optic because of no rail... BTW Thanx!!!
DarkLite
Looks great so far!Personally, I'd stain the wood to look like walnut, but to each his own. Will you be reshaping the trigger guard? It looks a little 'fat'.
Murdoc
Yup, the trigger guard has it's stomack both front and lower part, but it must have on front part. But no dark stain this time... all of my ones M14, SV98, AKSU have dark coloration, so light color this time. (will be bit darker after some more oiling and beeswax)
paranoiddroid
Wow... This makes me feel like the barrel extension on mine is a halfarsed job to make it sorta kinda L1a1 ish.... I'd be real interested in some.of those parts if you could cast them again. I really would like to put the proper stock on but... Dad's issue rifle was the polymer stock even though the wood is prettier.
Murdoc
Sadly no: On one hand the mold of the front handguard cap went wrong because I used too many times. On the other hand if you're in the UK much better tp get RS parts. You can get plastic too...
paranoiddroid
True but I'm not sure how easy modifying real parts will be based on your stock mount design. The actual furniture isn't going to be too hard to source the mounting hardware may take some tinkering though. As for the gun have you ended up hollowing out the stock and left it rear wired or did you rewire the gun? Are you going to try and mount the carry handle at all or is that something that the version you're replicating didn't have?
Murdoc
Stock has a hole indside, but it's age of LiPos, so no huge cavity needed. Im using a 1000 MAh lipo with size of only about two cigarettes. No, no carry handle. Trust me, working with RS parts much more easy.
Murdoc
Top cover finished, and trigger guard reshaped:

Corbeau
How did you make that top cover?
Murdoc
Hi! Sorry for late reply, I used various types of pipes welded together to form the thin steel plate. I also used wood hammer, beacuse at fist the top cover was too thin.
Corbeau
Thanks! I bought a real steel one that's a bit too small for the job, it seems
