Got Wood?
So I spotted one of these on the AK picture thread, and was pointed to the M4 range there. Many thanks guys. Forever I’ve hated the fact that M4 grips were not real size. I couldn’t figure out why either no ones made a slimmer motor or a gearbox shell that’ll take a PTW motor. Finally, Area have made a slim motor, in high torque and super high torque variants. Below are comparisons, and this install was on a TM recoil. In all pictures the rightmost grip is the original TM one, centre the Ares slim, and leftmost is a PTW grip. When it came to installing, there are a couple of niggles. The bearings on the recoil gearbox protrude from the gearbox shell, and Area haven’t accommodated for this. You will have to dremel/file off some material to slip the grip on all the way. The other issue is that the slim motor is quite a lot longer than the original. It will go on, but you can’t tighten the motor base plate on fully without simply locking the motor and getting the clicking noise. All the adjustment on the motor has to be done by tightening the base plate into the grip, rather than using the motor plate as normal. Once it’s in, it’s performance is pretty much the same as the TM1000 motor. It’s not the fastest or greatest motor in the world, but since I was happy with the 1000 motor before I’m happy with the improvement in the grip area. The super high torque is probably a little better in performance. Here is a video, it sounds a little unhealthy but not in the flesh. The battery is a 7.4v 1300 stock tube sized battery, so the smallest you’ll use bar a peq box size. The finished article.
DarkLite
From the performance that people have been showing, I'm wondering if the 'High Torque' is actually a ferrous motor and the 'Super High Torque' is a neo motor. Could you see if you can pick up a standard claw hammer with the motor magnets?
Got Wood?
I’m a little hesitant to get it out again just yet if I’m honest, it was 3rd attempt I got it sitting just right so don’t want to upset that until it’s had a few uses really! But I am fairly confident it could pick up a small hammer, yes
jal3
High torque = normal motor (but quite fine) Super high torque = Neo and slightly faster. Roughly ASG 22K-30K equivelant. Only recommend using the super high torque.
Got Wood?
Mine seems to have died which is a shame. Moved it across to another gun, plugged it in, nothing but a click. Even out of the gun. Other motors work fine. What normally causes this?
DarkLite
Could have worn out the brushes or the springs for the brushes. Alternatively, a winding has burnt out
Got Wood?
Damn. That’s a shame. Used it flawlessly all of last weekend. One go in a new G&P that works with the stock motor, and nothing but click. Worth taking apart and having a look? Is it something that can be fixed?
Got Wood?
Never mind, false alarm, although does raise another very important note. Be very aware of what small screws and bits of metal fly onto the motor when on a work bench. Motor was jammed thanks to the little metal washer being able to get inside, due to the lack of casing...
