WE AK-74UN MAGPUL Custom Build, The Beginning
A little over two and a half years ago (November 7th of 2015 to be exact) I posted a concept photo of a WE AK-74UN MAGPUL custom build on Instagram I was thinking about doing.

It looked like this:

Basically a WE AK-74UN with a MAGPUL MOE AK hand guard, MAGPUL MOE PMAG AK magazine shell, MAGPUL MOE AK pistol grip and a MAGPUL MOE AK stock. Also with an RMR sight and different muzzle brake.

There were several challenges with this concept. A major one being that the AK hand guard in the smallest size MAGPUL offer is too long for the WE AK-74UN model. The fixed AK stock also required the rear mounting trunnion that is on the WE AK-47 PMC receiver. My base gun was a WE AK-74UN model.

Also, the fact that, as far as I knew at the time, no one had attempted to fit any of these parts on a WE AK GBBR rifle so it was pretty much just hoping for the best in terms of if any of this would actually work, with or without mods.

So, I set out to get the parts to start the project.

I managed to source a WE AK-47 PMC receiver via special order from KIC Taiwan (http://kic.com.tw/).
NOTE: These days I would use KY Airsoft for extra, spare and replacement parts for WE guns (http://www.kyairsoft.com/)

MAGPUL MOE AK Pistol Grip
I managed rather quickly to install the pistol grip by just cutting out a slot in the front for the hand guard to go in to.

Successful installation of my first (out of two) MAGPUL MOE AK pistol grips.

http://i.imgur.com/TPzgBwi.png

However, on the WE OEM pistol grips there are nubs sticking out the top of the grip that go in to the receiver to keep it aligned and prevent it from twisting. I tried to solve this on my first attempt by drilling holes from the top side of the receiver, down into the grip, and then screwing in screws. Unfortunately I drilled a little too deep/close to the edge so I damaged my first pistol grip.
And because of my "mild" OCD, of course I had to get another one.

On this one I did a cleaner cut for fitting the trigger guard. I also took a different approach to the alignment issue. I melted in some left-over MAGPUL polymer (no shortage of that laying around by now 😛 ). Kind of like a cross-bar in the pistol grip. Then I drilled two holes where the holes in the receiver lined up, and cut down two M3 screws and super glued them in place, acting as alignment pins. Turned out real nice.

Here are the plain pictures of the final MAGPUL MOE AK pistol grip.

And now for the illustrations of the modifications I made to the pistol grip.

The legend for the all of mods are as follows:
R#, RED = MAGPUL polymer material removed.
A#, GREEN = MAGPUL polymer material added.
M#, BLUE = Metal reinforcements added.
MR#, ORANGE = Metal material removed.
PR#, YELLOW = Plastic material removed.

R1: I started out by cutting out a slot in the front of the grip for the trigger guard metal bar to go in to.
R2: I then had to square off the front face below the R1 cut out to get the trigger guard to fit flush against the grip.
R3: Trimmed down the side profiles of the pistol grip trigger guard "prongs" on the side for a more flush and ergonomic fit.
A1: Custom cut and melted in place the MAGPUL polymer cross-bar.
M1: Drilled corresponding holes for the pins, cut down some M3 screws to length and super glued them in place.
Additional: For the mounting hardware I custom cut an MC6S M6 socket head hex/allen screw and also custom fitted a washer.

MAGPUL MOE AK Stock
Next, I worked on fitting the stock. Some material had to be removed to make it fit in the WE receiver and I had to customize some of the mounting hardware to make it work. But overall it wasn't too bad. I did have to revise the fit a bit because it wasn't seating parallel to the back-end of the receiver when tightened down.

And the mods:
R1: Removed material on the left-hand side of the stock mounting "tang" to fit in the WE AK-47 PMC receiver. The inside of the receiver is a bit narrower and also has the rivets sticking in on the inside. I certainly could have done a better job with this mod, but it works and the installation is rock solid.
R2: Same as R1 but for the right-hand side.
R3: Adjustment of the perimeter profile interfacing with the rear face of the receiver to get a flush fit once installed and tightened down.
R4: Cut a hole in the center to allow for the rear trunnion mounting screw to be tightened down without flexing/damaging the MAGPUL material underneath.
Mounting hardware: Had to cut a new custom M3 hole in one of the retention plates and use an M3 screw to secure it. This was because the originally supplied MAGPUL mounting screw was too short and the threads in the plate were imperial spec. I also added a nut in between one of the open spaces to prevent material compression when tightened down.

MAGPUL MOE AK Hand Guard
Moving on the hand guard... I calculated that I had to reduce the overall length by about 30mm to make it fit. I used only hand tools to accomplish this. A saw, a mitre cut box, files, sand paper and a speed square to check angles. Initial dry-fit testing looked promising.

But, of course, just getting the length right doesn't cut it (harr hah). I had to figure out a way to align and secure the two halves back together. I came up with the idea to drill holes in both of the halves, insert and epoxy in metal rods (cut down nails), epoxy the interfacing surfaces, melt together the inside seams and finally add some additional metal nail reinforcements and MAGPUL polymer on top inside of the hand guard.

Instagram, 2016-01-02
Illustration of the pinning method used to secure the two halves of the hand guard together.

eSn7AUA.png

http://i.imgur.com/eSn7AUA.png

I have literally hammered this thing in place a dozen times during installation, wiggled it around and flexed it. It is not breaking under normal use :D

Holding the two halves in place and aligned while the epoxy cured was a bit of a struggle. There is a slight offset in alignment at the top of the joint on the left-hand side, and some jagged cuts from sawing it down on the bottom. But overall it turned out all right. But of course, again with my OCD, if I give it another (will be my fourth try, believe it or not), I think I can do even better still :D

Here are the plain pics of the hand guard:

And the mods:

R1: Cut down the overall length of the handguard by approximately 30mm. Squared up the two halves and made sure they were 99.9% correctly aligned...
R2: Access cut for installing the front sight retention grub screw. Ended up a little bit bigger than necessary because I got off-center while doing it and wanted it aligned and symmetrical.
R3: Access cut for removing the front sight retention roll pin.
R4: Trimmed down some material at the rear to make the hand guard fit on to the front of the WE AK-47 receiver.
R5: Partially removed material to embed the metal reinforcement nails (M2).
A1: Somewhere in the process I actually ended up removing a little too much of the overall length of the handguard. So to compensate for this and get a tight fit of the front sight hand guard retention plate I had to add on some MAGPUL polymer to the front of the hand guard. It would obviously be better to have some spare to remove than have to add on.
A2: Reinforcement MAGPUL polymer melted on top of embedded metal nails (M2) for additional strength.
M1: Perimeter pinning nails between the two halves.
M2: Embedded (R4) and melted in (A2) metal reinforcement nails for additional strength.
Additional: I also had to adjust the profile of the front sight hand guard mounting plate to make it fit against the MAGPUL AK hand guard front mounting face (not pictured).

Mods:

R1: Had to reduce the length of the hand guard top cover (front).
R2: Squared off and slightly reduced the profile of the retention ledge (front).
R3: Same as R1 but at the rear.
R4: Same as R2 but at the rear.
R5: Removed some material to make the top cover seat properly with the bottom of the hand guard.
R6: Reduced the inside thickness of the front retention ledge.

MAGPUL MOE AK-47 PMAG
So, now I had the magazine left to deal with. My build is originally an AK-74 base build, which meant I would like to use MAGPUL AK-74 PMAGs. However when I started this build, they had only released the AK-47 PMAGs. So that's what I started out trying to mod to accept the WE AK-47 PMC magazine internals. I managed to get a proof-of-concept fit of the PMAG shell in the WE AK but without internals.

Then, about two years down the road, the MAGPUL AK-74 PMAGs finally came out, and I bought some thinking it would work just fine. Well, I was disappointed :(

The RS MAGPUL AK-74 PMAGs are significantly shorter in overall length compared to the WE AK-74 magazines and their internals. So I had to revert back to the AK-47 PMAG shells.

Instagram, 2017-07-13
Complete and utter disappointment when I received the RS MAGPUL MOE AK-74 PMAGs :(

oFEZuiK.png

http://i.imgur.com/oFEZuiK.png

I think I used up about three or four RS MAGPUL AK-47 magazines trying different methods of modding and fitting the internals. But in the end I got it working. Not super pretty right now, my first working proof-of-concept RS MAGPUL AK-47 PMAG "shelled" WE AK-47 PMC internals magazine.

For future magazines I figure I want to do as little modifications as possible to the outside dimensions, and fit and seat the internals to the right position instead. But either way, because of the very precise fitment and many variables in fitting the internals in the PMAG shell, I doubt I will be able to come up with a solid method that can be replicated multiple times. So pretty much all magazines will need to be hand fitted. I was litterally chasing 0.1mm precision during fitment...

So, keep in mind, this is my first working prototype and not a sure-fire way to make it work.

But, in my research on the magazine fit of the original WE AK-47 PMC and WE AK-74UN magazines I found the key metric points that needed to be matched for the magazine to fit and function in the gun.

The metrics are these:

jFGHIuT.png

http://i.imgur.com/jFGHIuT.png

The bottom illustration refers to this measurement. Centerline of magazine to top of the lower receiver edge. Note that I had a metal ruler laid out on top of the receiver edge which offset the measurements by about 0.25-0.5mm.

With mods:

R1: I cut off the original feeding lips at the top of the magazine as tight as I could to the magazine body to get a flush edge.
R2: I cut out an opening slot in the rear of the magazine to allow for the internals to drop into the magazine.
R3: The rear locking tang had to be modified somewhat (Unclear).
R4: The front locking notch had to be modified somewhat (Unclear).
R5: I removed the internal magazine follower grooves using a chisel and a file to allow for the internals to slide in.
A1: To get positive lock up in the magazine well and I had to add material to the bottom of the rear locking tang.
A2: I added some additional MAGPUL polymer to close a gap between the front of the PMAG magazine lip and the bottom of the internals feeding lip edge.
A3: I added some MAGPUL polymer to the rear at the bottom of the magazine to wedge the internals in place.
A4: Same as A3 but for the front of the bottom of the magazine.
A5: I cut out a piece of spare MAGPUL polymer to fit inside the bottom of the magazine up against the internals, drilled a hole for the seating screw and melted it in place.
A6: Added some material to the front inside edge at the top of the magazine shell to align the fit of the internals as per specification.
A7: Same as A6 but at the rear of the top of the magazine.
A8: To secure the baseplate, in lack of space to retain any spring loaded mechanism, I simply stippled some dots on the perimeter of the magazine where the base plate slides on.
A9: Corresponding stippling dots to friction fit against A8.
A10: To get the bottom to look "clean" I cut out the tiny square of plum red polymer and melted it in place in the base plate and covered it up with some additional black MAGPUL polymer.

WE AK-47 PMC magazine internals with mods:

MR1: The rear metal tang/box of the original magazine was removed, leaving about a 2mm "stop" tang at the top. This helps the internals seat securely in the PMAG shell.
MR2: There is an angular edge at the top of the magazine below the flanges which were removed for a better fit.
M3: The rear "bump" at the top and the bottom of the magazine internals were removed to allow for greater flexibility of installation angle of the internals in the PMAG shell.
M4: Sanded down the rear edges of the magazine body because it was pinching at the back of the PMAG shell.
PR1: Plastic removed from the front of the magazine BB channel to allow for better and more flexible fit inside the PMAG shell.

I also made my bolt ambidextrous by drilling holes and installing some M6 threaded round bar with custom made charging handles. I had to cut off some material on the dust cover on the left-hand side of the receiver to allow for the charging handle to move freely.

Dude, this is a nice documentation of your project! Well done! :o I like the professionalism how do you handle this article and this build, I hope that WE will see this as possible next AK project from them - maybe 10 years later they will release something similar like this, after the AK74. :D

Did you calculated how many hours did you spend to make this beauty?

Haha, no, I have not. But it has been on and off again for the past two and a half years... Many many hours for sure :o

But this pretty much only came together in the last month when I was on vacation from work. Did lots of work in the last month.

  • 5 months later...

So I got a message from an airsoft builder/tech on my FB yesterday that actually did what I was thinking about. He made 3D model prints of MAGPUL AK 74 PMAGs for his WE AK :)

Not officially a product for sale/use or anything but maybe will be.

AFAIK he printer these himself at home and running it through an online 3D print service is anywhere between $60 USD to $185 USD so uhmmm :o

I don't think my OCD could accept that 3D printer surfcace finish and non PMAG material but certainly very cool and interesting :o

And I already have a dozen MAGPUL AK 47 PMAGs on hand for modding 😛

His FB is https://www.facebook.com/KineticActionAirsoft/ if anyone wants to get in touch or anything. I think he's on here as well :)
