My eye! Sweet Jesus, Ouch!

I can't believe how goddamm stupid I've just been....

I just dropped a really important letter - with receipts for my medical and dental bills for reimbursement - into the post box...

Without sticking a damn stamp on it!!!!!

Now what the hell am I supposed to do? 30 seconds of stupidity - it's not like I don't even HAVE any stamps, I've got plenty right in my wallet right now - and I can't do anything about it.

As soon as I let go of the letter I went "NO! why the hell did I do that???" but, of course, it was too late by then - and post boxes are specifically designed so that you can't get things out of them again without the key to open the door up.

Should I camp out next to it to wait for the post man to empty it? Would he even let me put a stamp on the letter even if I did? Or am I just going to get screwed over by Royal Mail trying to send a letter to my new employer (Yeah, great impression that'll be!) without any postage on it? Will they send it back to me instead (the 'From' address is right there on the envelope) of sending it where it's supposed to go? Will they charge me for that, too?

Gah! I'm kicking myself now...

Most likely event is the recipient will get a notification that the postage is due, be asked to pay the postage cost and a further fee ontop. As you say, not a great impression to make on a new employer. Camp out, call the local depot and see when collection is, or cross your fingers.

While on the subject of laptops.

I hate Fujitsu Siemens.

They release the Amilo range of laptops, which had an inherent flaw in the screen cable causing it to work loose and the screen flicker.

Then they flat out deny that it was a flaw, despite the overwhelming feedback on their forums.

It can just be plugged back in, but that means dismantling it, which takes time, and when done repeatedly isn't great for the laptop.

Some people may just be able to get a new one, but being at college I don't have the dough to just drop on a new one, meaning I'm fixing it pretty much weekly. <_<

I'll go for some of that too.

Toshiba

Who deliberatley design the power port on the side of the laptop so that the one load bearing part is made of plastic with a shelf life of 18 months.

Once it breaks, you can't charge the laptop and it's (according to my PC repair chap) either £90 for the tiniest piece of plastic, or a new laptop.

(or in my case, slightly less for a repair job from said PC repair friend but which is only temporary...and a year later is on the verge of going again)

grrrr

I think I will glue the cable.

Maybe not glue the plug in, but give it a bit of slack and glue the bit near the hinge. Shouldn't work loose after that.

When I'm done with college and it comes time to buy a new laptop I will certainly get a tried and tested model.

I really fancy one of those rugged military grade ones.

In OD, to match pretty much all of my gear.

And as a bonus, it would feel epic playing C&C on one of those.

Yes, it says 1730. Of course, there might have been other collections before that - but I don't know if they still do multiple collections any more.

I think I'll go loiter around the post box at about 1720, hope to catch the postie. With any luck he'll let me put a stamp on the envelope if it's there.

If not, I'll just have to send an email to the recipient to explain that I've been stupid and if they have to pay extra charges, could they please just take the cost out of the expenses money that I'm writing to claim? Hopefully it'll be okay....

Dear Students,

Get a clue.

Hopefully you have entered higher eduction with the aim of bettering yourselves academically, socially and financially, which in turn will benefit you when seeking employment. This level of further education will allow you, once employed, to earn a better wage and pay back the loans you've taken while studying many times over. As a long term plan, higher education yields undeniable benefits.

You do not "deserve" free higher eduction. It pays for itself over time. Now shut up and go back to class.

Regards,

Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells

A bloody men. I'm going back for my MA in January so technically still a student, but today's demonstrations have put a massive sour taste in my mouth. I know half a dozen people who are doing a degree just to drink and loaf around for three years before getting a job, and strangely enough they're the most vocal about their right to 'free higher education'.

They can f*ck right off. The idea that everyone should go to university regardless of intelligence or qualification is bullsh*t. If you're thick as pig manure and you go off to the university of skullf*ck nowhere and do a degree in David Beckham studies you're just going to end up with a pointless scrap of paper, thirty grands worth of debt for no reason, and probably worse job prospects than you had than if you'd gone into employment straight from school because any prospective interviewer is going to look at your degree course and see that you've set out to do a degree for as little effort as possible.

The £9 000 a year is just a recommended number by that report anyway isn't it? I can't imagine it'll stay that high by the time it's actually implemented by 2012. Lot of fuss over nothing.

On the plus side, we'll hopefully get to see some of the braindead che-guevara wannabes who've attacked the convservative HQ get beaten by riot police this evening. Could do with a laugh.

I have a Sony Laptop that's pretty much the same thing, a real powerhouse machine with a wobbly plastic plug. I'm not a real fan of the Apple OS but the way their power plug hooks on with a magnet is pretty slick.

Jason & Dave, I agree that there are a lot of students out there who do stupid degrees and can't pay off their debt, but there are also those who are coming out with good degrees in subjects like engineering and they cannot get jobs either!

I am going to be in approx £20k+ of debt by the time I leave, if I don't get a job (quite likely atm) then how am I supposed to pay it off with the interest rate rising as I am no longer in further education.

If I was to pay £9k a year in tuition then I would be looking at over £30k in tuition fees alone, let alone living costs. Yes some students get jobs to help fund themselves but that is not always possible, I personally cannot juggle a job and coursework because the volume varies throughout the year from nothing to 4-5 pieces at the same time.

Where I am studying, there is a huge volume of international students, some of whom stun me as to how they pass each year. However the universities will let them through purely because they bring in so much more money, approx £6-9k per annum.

Watching the footage of the rioting it amazed me how the police did just stand there as a group of "students" kicked a window in. Allowing destruction of property. I'm guessing they had to because stopping them would infringe on their human right to expression or some other bull.

Yeah but under the proposals students wouldn't actually need to pay in advance at all, they only repay the cost of their tuition after they graduate and earn more than 21k a year.

Anyone else see the dumb twats who occupied Conservative HQ had misspelt their sign?

This is all Labours fault - their plan to have 50%+ of school leavers going on to get degrees competely watered down the point of having a degree.

While I'm not for elitism, university used to mean something when fewer people went, now it means nothing and the post grad job market is bare while the number of graduates is artificially inflated.

In a strange way I think that increasing the costs may actually redress the balance, even though it will be an unfair percentage of children of higher earners who are able to go to uni, perhaps it will reduce the numbers sufficiently to allow teaching/qualification standards to rise again.

Also far far less foreign students would help.

For people that are supposedly off to get degrees, they're all surprisingly stupid and lacking in common sense. The government will change what they'll change, how many tens of thousands marched against going to war in Iraq? Didn't stop us going. If a few adolescent *rickrolls* go around smashing up the place in 'protest' against changes as minor as these, it's bleeding obvious they're going to achieve the sum total of sweet *fruitcage* all. So all they've done is made a *fruitcage* big mess and destroyed a few good, hard working people's businesses. Utter, morons...

They've also managed to massively reinforced negative stereotypes of students that were only just starting to change in the positive...

Yep. All my mates from school who went off to uni at the same time I joined up have mostly finished their courses now, and I know a fair few who put in plenty of work for their degree, but this sort of thing will just give the entire nation a totally negative view on the entire student community; and justifiably it seems from today's events. It's just sooo *fruitcage* ridiculous the whole thing makes my brain hurt. There is no logic in it at all, who the *fruitcage* came up with the whole idea, and what the hell did they ever think they might possibly achieve by it? They were sorely *fruitcage* mistaken that's for sure, gang mentality at it's finest.

I have to say, I've actually had some quite intimate encounters with CS Gas in my time, and I feel confident in saying that that stuff was made for these sorts of events. When they're all crying on the floor feeling like they're suffocating with every patch of exposed skin burning and nose and eyes streaming like taps, then maybe they'd think twice, but I'm sure there's some regulation/publication/set of orders that prevents any discomfort being caused to the poor darlings. The fun you could have with all the non-lethal and riot control systems that are out there... someone needs to make a video game about the mixture of 40mm rubber slugs and protesters like these.

Making the mistake of going to a rifle club last Sunday and blatting away with a .22 semi auto m4, Winchester .44, straight pull 5.56 AR, great war smle, AI and numerous other lovely rifles, then going home and looking at my expensive airsoft toys and wondering why I made the mistake of giving up RS target shooting in the first place.

Guess it'll be a FAC then perhaps a straight pull L1a1 for me!!

What narks me about the student protests is that the ones doing the rioting probably weren't even students. I gave up on NUS demos when I was at uni as they just seemed to get hijacked by the communist hippies socialist worker party who did all the trouble making

And Ian Tomlinson had it coming didn't he?

I think its a shame that a forum I used to enjoy reading has been populated by a bunch of Jeremy Clarkson-Alan Partridge hybrids.

And that has what to do with either these protests or the tactial response options CKinnerley mentioned, was Ian Tomlinson CS'd or baton gunned etc? No

Should these protesters have been CS'd or baton gunned, er well yes, it would have been a legitimate use of force against their actions.

You're point may be valid, however its not a perfect world, gas tends to disperse, nor does it only go down the throats of those who are being violent, breezing over those who are protesting peacefully and have no connection to the crime other then proximity.
