You can never have too many backups.

I have at least 3 on my system, one back up partition (not as stupid as they seem), a seperate plug in external hard drive and a USB pen for all my lighter files and documents and even that is going to have a second external hard drive and possibly a DVD backup added to it.

Never have i lost an important file but i always make sure the chance is as low as it can go.

Yes, sadly, I know that it's mostly my own fault.

Not least of all for not stopping the stupid chkdsk program from scanning the drive in the first place. I should have known no good would come of it.

I just can't believe it would have deleted 40 Gb of files that seemed perfectly functional the day before... <_<

Normally my laptop and desktop act as each others' backups, I kept most files synchronised between them. But I deliberately moved all the stuff off the desktop because I was going to be away. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but with hindsight it doesn't.

I don't really have enough time to redownload the stuff, and the internet access my parents have isn't the best or the fastest. I could get a bit back, I guess...

I've been trying a program called "recover my files" v4 - but so far no joy. I think chkdsk didn't actually delete the files themselves, but rather any reference to them in the MFT, FAT and so on. So you'd think it would be possible to recover the data. But whether they'll still work or not is another matter.

I'll try that program mattmaniac suggested, see if that's any better.

If not, I guess it's not the end of the world, it's just very, very annoying.

Yes, you take the list, tear it up, put the models on eBay and then buy an army that isn't a bunch of space pirates that look like a gay Link from Zelda :P

Hed the programme that Matt recommended is brilliant and free.

They also make C-cleaner and Defraggle which are equally great.

One thing, Piriform will kick Microsoft backside anyday, especially as you can delete and defrag what you want ranther than allowing the Windows versions to go bandit and do what they please. Also if you need at home support, get someone on here who knows what they are doing and use Team Viewer to help you search for any trace of the files.

It seems to be recovering some files - the filenames are all shot to hell, so now I have to watch a great number of video files to figure out which film is which and recreate the filenames and folder structure...

But it's not a total loss after all. I feel a bit happier now.

Prepare to see hours of cougar adult material then :P

How many full was that in 40gb, i would assume at standard definition i would assume about 55-60 unless they were compressed in which case a bit more.

Looks like it's recovered about 8-9 gb. Where the rest went, God only knows...

Better than nothing.

Quite a lot of the series episodes were taken from HD sources, so the files were quite large compared to the length of the episode.

And I guess I won't have to watch the whole thing each time to figure out what it is.

Cheers, matey, that's very good of you. I won't find out the BFPO address of where I'm going until I get there - mainly because I don't know where I'm going to end up yet!

There's a big no-drinking policy in Theatre, for some reason. I guess too many squaddies couldn't be trusted not to go too far... It's not a big thing, I'm no addict so I don't mind living without booze. As long as there's plenty of Coca Cola... :)

A lot of these recovered files seem to be duplicates or fragments or corrupted so the player can't read them. I'm down to about 6 gb of useable files. Oh well.

Backup? But I've never had any trou12-0ua;&^&_)&%(^$*%£$£ <_<

Goddamn computers. The worst part is I could have avoided the whole thing with the press of one button to skip the damn scan. :(

In other news.... The family dog has been sick and died today. :( Poor thing - liver and kidney failure at 13. Not a bad age for a dog, I guess, and Shetland Sheepdogs are prone to that when they get older (in the same way that Labradors are prone to hip dysplasia) Better to make a quick end, I guess.

Always true, can't bear to see a pet that is being forced to live out its time in pain as the owners wont put it down.

As for backing up all i can say is now that you have learned a lesson make sure you do it, i have had to use my backups twice now but like i say i have never lost a file that was important so the system does work. Plus an external hard drive that is around 80-160gb can be picked up for very little, especially when you can now get terabytes for cheap.

As for alcohol i have lived without it for 4yrs (though i never drunk much anyway) and it isn't that hard at all, in fact it is easy.

If you have a Region 2 DVD player i have some items i can 'donate'. At least that way they are going to a needy soldier if we can class you as that :P

And don't worry they aren't porn (well not all of them, i sure you guys could use some ;))

I'm going to be taking my laptop with me, which has a built-in blu-ray player (not that I have any blu-ray discs).

I'm pretty sure I don't count as "needy" and barely a soldier given what I'm going to be doing, but even so.

I don't know what kind of 'net access I'll have, I'm hoping to be able to get on at least a couple of times a week, but it all depends on what facilities will be available where I end up and how many other people want to use it and so on...

I'll try to PM interested parties with information when I know it - but if you don't hear from me for a while it will just be because I don't have access. Worry not, I will return to the forums as soon as possible.

But yes, it's definitely true that any parcels sent to the listed BFPO addresses in Theatre are free as long as they're sent by "a relative or friend" to a named person and are under 2 kg. Please see the links I posted before for more information.
