-FIDO-
ok so first for everyone who doesn't know what exactly a m70ab2 is: (credit for the pictures goes to stottman - thank you for sharing this great pics!) as you can see its a much improved kalashnikov variant, from former eastbloc jugoslavija its still in use there, there is also a full stock model (m70b1) http://www.zastava-arms.co.yu/srpski/vojni.htm so here we go: first step was to find a base gun for my project. i decided to use a guarder akm kit as base rest is from the good old marui ak second step: order as much rs parts as possible (and legal) for the conversion (BIG thank you krazny) i have the complete rs m70 frontset (but not the barrel of course) the underfolder stock will be a polish one, which is very similar to the jugo one with a tm folding mechanism bolt is a guarder non blowback one and then new smooth topcover, and of course selector and other small bits for now i have everything except a hand guard retainer and the rear trunnion (which are on its way) 3rd step was a lot of brainstorming and measuring/calculating/comparing with pictures i have and then finally go to work..... i will post pics of the progress, don't worry

RPK
Why the AKM kit? You'd save money by just buying a metal body and outer barrel.
Cyber Soldier
Fido If you do a run of these or can get me the parts to make one I will have your babies
The Crunchy Bunny
You got that Guarder wood laying around? I'll take it if you don't want it. And, that gun will be pretty nice. Was it easy fitting those grips? I would imagine it would be a little hard.
-FIDO-
day 1 and 2 ( i started 3 days ago, but didnt have a cam and now i just took my phone cam - so sry for the bad quality) first step was to insert the rear sight into the rear sigh post, very hard if you use the rs spring leaf... then i had to cut the body like in this pic: as you can see the yugo rear sight post is more backwards then the normal ak one i also slimmed a bit the barrel where to post sits finnaly then drilled 2 holes and threaded them (M3, so i can use the guarder screws) fitting the wooden lower handguard was a drop in fit then i fitted the unmodified upper gas tube with wood handguard to get the position for the gas tube/grenade launcher sight: again the same like above: drill a hole make a thread fit the part the little silver spot is to prevent it from moving around, maybe 0,5mm drilled out ok so that was easy, but as i want to make a underfolder version the battery has to go under the topcver and inside the gas tube.. the tube was way to narrow to fit the stick battery, so i decided to make it the VFC way i cut up 2/3 of the tube and filed it and testfit and file... at the end after some work the batt fitted inside the tube (i have only a blurry pic, but i will make one better to show you) so the battery fitted inside the gastube, but couldnt pass the rear sight post - damn i had to grind down really much of the inside so that the stick batt fits, but finnaly i did it next day i started to convert the guarder non blowback bolt as the rear sight post sits more backwards, i first wanted to cut it the shape of the post, but then i just thinned again the inside of the post and cut up the top and sides of the bolt for a perfect fit as you can see there is not much left from the bolt hehe next i had to shorten the topcover (upper is the cut one for the M70) now i inserted (hammered) the threading for the flashhider inside the front sight post i also had to thin the pin for the flashhider the outer diameter of the barrel is like 0,5mm thicker then the inside diameter of the post so i have to grind really much and hammer it finnaly onto the barrel and make a thread for maximum security thats why i didnt install the front sight yet as i dont have the handgaurd retainer ok so enough for the first days, i didnt thought i would make that much in so short time but the hardest part imo will be the underfolderstock... note that it still has the akm front sight Why the AKM kit? You'd save money by just buying a metal body and outer barrel. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> well why not? its my money... Fido If you do a run of these or can get me the parts to make one I will have your babies <{POST_SNAPBACK}> i dont think i will make more, but i post this making off so everybody can make one themself (maybe even better then i) You got that Guarder wood laying around? I'll take it if you don't want it. And, that gun will be pretty nice. Was it easy fitting those grips? I would imagine it would be a little hard. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> all the leftover parts from the akm kit are as good as sold, sry
DanDan
Wow, it's looking seriously good already, very authentic! I did see a tutorial somewhere on how to mod a full stock reciever into a underfolder... And I know someone else on this forum has done it too, so its possible at least. Cyber Soldier
Why make the AB2? When you can make an AB1 without having to worry about the folding stock. You can't hit someone properly with a folding stock
-FIDO-
as promised some better pics: heres the gas tube, you can easy see what has to be cut to fit a stick battery: and here a better pic of the m70: Why make the AB2? When you can make an AB1 without having to worry about the folding stock. You can't hit someone properly with a folding stock <{POST_SNAPBACK}> lol i dont want to hit anybody with the stock its just more challenging, and i served first with the ab2, gone trough the whole basic training with it.... then i got the b1 and the underfolder version just looks much better then the wooden stock one in my eyes
TerranCmdr
Wow that looks great dude! I love how it's so unique. Mad mad props.
-FIDO-
day 3 adding the underfolder stock ok so first thing was to remove the rear trunnion and this damn rail... it was really harder then i thought, but finally i managed it and had success after that i took the stock and a marker and drawed where the holes have to go for the folding mechanism ok next i drilled and filed and shaped the first hole then the second hole... and then i had to mod the stock and the marui folding mechanism.. now i screwed everything together, secured all screws with wood glue (i use it instead of loctite hehe) and put everything together next i will cover the hole in the rear with the rs trunnion, i didn't finish it today, it was just to late and i was satisfied with the work, the underfolder is done =) i still didn't add the zastava front sight as i don't have the hand guard retainer till now but i will do this, now as the underfolder is done its almost finished in my eyes... rest will be easy i hope now some pics, enjoy

-FIDO-
day 4 adding the front sight i couldn't wait anymore for the retainer to arrive and added the front sight will add the retainer when it arrives... i had to file down the front of the barrel as its ~0,5mm to big in diameter after that i hammered the frontsight onto the barrel then i drilled a hole at the bottom trough the sight on the barrel made a thread and inserted the screw important is also to make sure the sight is correctly aligned later i will pin the sight and gasblock for max security and strengh here a pic with the grenade attachment and sight: you can also see the integrated nightsight which flips up after that i picked up the gearbox at the postal office i tuned it slightly above forum limits and fitted it inside sits snugly and nearly a drop in fit =) then a problem: after screwing on the grip the fire selector hangs...oh noes! a bit of troubleshooting then i found it... because i had removed a little cylinder in the back end of the receiver it blocked the selector mechanism inside when the grip is tightened too much! now i know for what this cylinder was inside the body.... after some filling i solved this problem and assembled everything works good - looks good i still didn't cover the hole in the rear..will pin and glue it.... close the holes from the siderail, some pins, the retainer and some other small cosmetic things... full view: You managed to attach the under folder stock, very cool! It's a lot of work heh? Same with my akms <{POST_SNAPBACK}> yeah A LOT of work *fruitcage* ACE! I'm sorry about the retainer, I'm gonna get you one I promise! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> no problemo, and again thank you!

-FIDO-
ok so after a loooong time some updates i did some improvements and now its perfect imo added some detail to the bolt: now it reassembles the m70 bolt a bit more i pinned everything to the barrel and its also holded by the original screw design that i made: drilled out the pin hole that locks the muzzle and added a new one i shaved off a bit on one side of the pin, now its holded just like the real one when i remove the muzzle and wont pop out the rear is closed: i used a epoxy putty that holds everything rock solid in place and acts also as a holder for the gb finally i got a proper jugo sling, now im happy even if it smells like sh*** and here fully field stripped: you can see that i also added the real handguard retainer, perfect! as much as im happy with my build, i will get one of the nice akms bodies for the more correct look and full steel folding mech although i got machined the lock for the stock from steel the remainder is marui pot... so last update to come will be akms stock installed and then its über perfect =D
