Cyber Soldier
I know a lot of Marines ditch their L85s as soon as they get to Afghanistan because AKs are so much better and they obviously aren't going to have ammo supply problems.

starburst
The no shaving thing is to do with being more friendly with the locals (local custom is no shaving, its a sign of respect thing)
Cyber Soldier
That's the official line but most squaddies I know say it's because they don't want to waste the clean water they have on shaving.

Kipper
They dont shave because in Islam a beard is a sign of adult-hood. Men wont speak to you if you dont have a beard, at least thats what i was told.
Belladonna
that i can imagine to be quite true... our hearts and minds campaign to a next level... next the british army will wear robes and carry AKs.. we want them to feel comfortalbe with us... what utter PC bs has reached the army... Cyber Soldier
what utter *beep* are you talking? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The *beep* I was told by a serving marine who got back from his tour of duty. Kipper: Don't make broad generalisations about Islam but you are right about certain cultures seeing a beard as the sign of being adult male.

I did not alledge anything about Islam, I was merely passing on a comment said to me.
starburst
Kipper is right, I checked with my girlfriend after I posted my post about the shaving deal, as she had been telling me about her cousin sending over photos from Afganistan with a pretty big beard and long hair (Im told this guy has nearly always been clean shaven). I dont see how you could say that kipper was generalizing, as he is right in what he said its just some people think differently than others (yes even in Islamic communities and about Islamic beliefs)
Cyber Soldier
I meant that his comment seemed to suggest that all people of the islamic faith would not talk to you if you didn't have a beard where as there a plenty of muslims with no facial hair at all and so that plainly isn't true. starburst
Yeah there are about 6 or 7 in most of my uni classes with no or little facial hair
