Glossary of Airsoft Terms

Wondering what 'DPM' means, or need to know what a tracer is and how it works?  This is the most comprehensive Airsoft glossary on the web, and could help you understand the world of airsoft a whole lot better.

What is Airsoft?

If you're new to the world of airsoft and want to know what it's all about, this should help.

What is an Automatic Electric Gun (AEG)?

The AEG is the current standard for airsoft skirmishing and can be a surprisingly good short-range target shooting gun as well.  Powered by electricity, the mechanism of the AEG can provide accurate, reliable shooting.

What is a Gas Blow-Back (GBB)?

The Gas Blow Back mechanism is most often found in airsoft pistols and SMGs.  It allows an expanding gas to power a BB out of the barrel while simultaneously reloading the mechanism ready for the next shot.

What is a Electric Blow-Back
(EBB)?

The Electric Blow-Back is a cheap way of getting in to airsoft for many people. It operates in a similar way to an AEG, but with less complexity and a lower muzzle energy. Sold primarily to younger airsofters, this is not particularly suitable for skirmishing, but can be an inexpensive bit of fun.

What is a Non Blow-Back (NBB)?

The Non-Blow Back mechanism is more simple than that of the Gas Blow Back.  The same expanding gas is used to launch the BB, but the reloading of the gun is done either manually, or as the result of the trigger pull.

What is a 'Springer'?

'Springer' is the nick-name given to spring powered airsoft guns.  Quite simply, the mechanism relies on a spring powered piston to launch a BB.  All 'Springers' are single-shot and reloading must be done manually.  These are usually the least expensive of all airsoft guns.

Which one should I get?
(AEG vs GBB vs ...)?

Although there are all these different types of airsoft replica, there is a world of difference between them.  AEGs, GBBs, NBBs, EBBs and 'Springers' are all comparatively rated here.  See which one will suit you best.

What is Airsoft Skirmishing?

First, it was a collection of nice looking replicas, and then out of nowhere, a sport sprang up.  Here's the full story...

What is Mil-Sim?

Skirmishing - The Next Generation...
Not a natural progression by any means, mil-sim is short for Military Simulation and is about as close as you can get to being on the front lines, except you get a break for lunch.
