  1. All real AKM metal parts i have looks and "reacts" the same way with sand paper as my Inokatsu AKM...

presumably used parts right? where the paint has worn down through real use.

dont get me wrong, i'm not saying that your wear jobs are unrealistic, it's infinitely easier to get a decent looking heavily worn look with a blued AK than with a painted one. but no AK since the AK47 has actually been blued, no russian AK at least.

@cyclone TAW: with a magnesium reciever you'll have a very hard job to make it look real, as it wont 'dull' the same way as steel. odds are it will remain fairly bright. some sort of brown paint/ink wash might do the trick.

most importantly, focus on the raised areas and edges. using a scotch brite pad, these areas will likely get worn quickly while leaving the flatter parts less worn just by rubbing it over the surface of the gun. remember, real guns wont have random patches of paint scraped off the reciever. 90% of wear will be on corners or raised areas of the gun, the flatter areas will usually be less worn and show more random scratches/stone chips.

to be honest, i wouldnt even attempt something like GRIM's work with a G&G. first off, as i mentioned a heavily worn finish is really REALLY difficult to pull off with a painted gun (as opposed to a blued one, like GRIM's) and without a full steel gun it would just look wrong as the metal will never turn that dark, dirty gunmetal with a tint of brown sort of colour. in your case you'd best stick with soem light weathering and possibly experiment with some articicial darkening of the metal.

  2. I think its a matter of what paint is used on the gun, the Inokatsu is very well made and painted much like the real thing so i think its why it looks better when i sandpaper it.

ironically GRIM, inok/RMW/LCT are finished nothing like the real steel. they are all blued, while all real AKs from AKM onwards were parkerised and then painted.

however, it is very easy to get a convincing approximation of heavy wear with a blued finish as it's not actually paint, thus the wear is more subtle and you wont end up with bare patches like artificial jobs on painted AKs often end up with. technically, the likes of VFC who use a glossy paint should be the best base for a realistic job, but real wear is pretty damn hard to approximate on a painted gun.

@cyclone TAW: dont use sandpaper, use scotch brite pads (plastic pads for cleaning non stick pans) as they wont scratch as much. if your AK isnt steel you'll have a hard job getting it to look convincing full stop, however if yours is steel it will look much better once the metal has oxidised (essentially rusted) you dont want full on rust, but once the oxidisation has taken place the metal wont be as bright and will have the darker, duller colour seen on real guns. you could speed this up with some salt water, splash it with water, leave it until it rusts, then brush off the rust, you *should* have a nice oxidised finish.

another idea i toyed with was putting it in a sack with a load of rough sand, grit and small stones and shaking the hell out of it (maybe put it in a cement mixer or something) a bit of abuse like that should add some random damage to compliment the relatively tidy, uniform wear to the edges of the gun cased by rubbing.

  3. What is the best way, if any, for a DIY stippling?

soldering iron, then let your imagination run wild.

theres no wrong or right way to stipple, just do what you think will look good and increase grip.

  4. What's the deal with the front rail you have the optic mounted to? Everywhere I look the top cover is one solid piece, did you need to cut a hole yourself?

it's called a scout rail, M14 SOCOMs come with them stock

  5. meh. horses for courses i guess.

IMO an eotech or just about anything else would be too bulky, making the gun look overly front heavy. i think big sights like that mounted halfway along a gun's barrel makes it look like it's got a weird growth.

then again lots of people seem to do this, maybe i'm the only one who doesnt like it

  6. the m14 looks nice but the sight seems too small to me

if it was on a normal scope mount i'd agree. but larger sights on scout rails look stupid and unbalanced IMO. the T1 fits with the lines quite nicely.

  7. i hate that stock usually but i'm rather liking that setup. the AFG really looks at home.

i think black rails, possibly with tan/FDE ladder covers would look really good. possibly a contrasting butt pad and cheek rest too.

  8. Aye, the EoTech is too big - if I could afford a Kobra I would, but alas, I cannot. Until then, I work with what I have.

The front grip is a custom job from an ELEMENT AKSU grip set, which came with a pistol grip that I didn't need - so I dremeled out a hole in the bottom of the lower grip, fed the pistol grip in from the top till it sat perfectly straight and epoxied it into place, painted it over and soldered two holes in for the rail to be bolted on - there's a spacer (an extra bolt) in between the rail and the grip proper as the ribs and bumps on the grip stop anything from bolting onto the rail otherwise.

Tis' a bit rough and ready, but I think it works - keeping as many AKSU-specific parts in the build helps keep the lines looking good.

still think a small RDS on a small rail just in front of the rear sight would fit best with the overall look of the gun, but its your gun after all.

also, doesnt that VFG interfere a lot with the 7.62 mags? i would have thought 5.45 mags would be easier to use.

  9.

you chould have just said new mini or BMW mini. i dont think they look too bad, i wouldnt want one mind you, nor would i want an original mini or just about anything with retro modern styling.

The TT Cab is nice. The S2000 is *suitcase*, however.

visually or mechanically? VTEC engines are solid as can be and the S2000 topped the driver power survey survey (a survey of how satisfied car owners are with their motors) last year and has done well just about any other year.

as i said, i still wouldnt own one :P its a hairdresser's car and a civic type R will have similar get up and go while looking better.

  10. you know dark, for a raped AK, thats kinda nice.

the vert grip looks really well done.

just throwing a couple of ideas out here, i think the laser looks a bit mahoosive, might look better if you find a smaller unit and clamp it to the underside of the barrel (almost MGS2 style)

also i think the eotech makes it look a tad unbalanced, i think a short section of rail bolted on the area in front of the rear sight with either a doctor or aimpoint T1 would look pretty sweet.

  11. haha, i started weathering my VFC a couple of days after i got it. i was so worried i'd *fruitcage* it up. the trick is to go steady with a scotch brite pad, you have less chance of overdoing it.

i havent actually tried saltwater, no need to now as the wear on my AK has dulled naturally over a long time. but in theory it should give the same effect, just gently wipe/scrub off excess rust and the steel should have dulled nicely. i've seen people give their AK the far cry 2 treatment (i.e completely rusted) by leaving it in a tub of saltwater, but i reckon a light misting left overnight shouldn't produce stupid ammounts of rust and should do the trick nicely.

  12. Very nice mate :) However maybe give the reciever a bit of rub (the flat) in certain places?

disagree. why would there be patches missing on non protruding parts. looks pretty good as it is, maybe focus a bit on the bolt and the edges/raised areas on the sight block, it looks a bit fresh there.

flolito, if that's the steel one you might want to try a little bit of saltwater to add a bit of rust. not permanent, you can rub it off afterwards just do it to speed up the metal oxidisation. the bare steel will start to dull and change colour (oxidisation) on it's own accord, but this takes a long time. i did my AKS74 about a year and a half ago and it looks much more realistic now the metal has dulled. next weathering job i do i'll definitely give controlled rusting a go.

  13. 206 looks OK and if its anything like the 106 it handles pretty well.

R5x is just...ugh. Looks like a Mini with poorly done cosmetic surgery and on a very poor diet plan.

it's a typically girly car however you may think it looks. i quite like the S2000 and TT RS, but both are typical hairdressers cars nonetheless (maybe not so much the TT RS, but the TT is definitely)

    and whats an R5x?

  14. 206 isnt bad. They can be pretty sporty and fun machines. As long as its not pink or a Micra CC you are forgiven ;)

you *suitcasing* me? you think a 206CC is less girly and more fun than a cooper S?

206s are very girly indeed (no offence nicoli, although you seem to have come to terms with that :P), and you're implying that a mini cooper S is NOT fun or sporty? those things go like *suitcase* off a shovel! the standard model will do the 0-60 sprint in 7.4 seconds and the JCW even faster!

dont get me wrong, im no fan of the BMW mini (or even the original) but saying a cooper S is sad and girly in one breath and that a 206cc is a manly, fun and sporty in the next sounds pretty wrong. :P

edit: swear filter isnt very observant today

  15. I was just surfing over the forum and it suddenly dawned on I that I've never posted mine up here

    So, without further a do.....

What my G&G Veteran looked like at the 17th Jan game (with me holding it in a suitably actiony type pose :P )....

What she looks like now after her substancial rebuild.....

    Yup, a G&G Mk14 Mod0 Sage EBR DMR!! :D

urgh. how could you do that to a G&G veteran of all things! it had a nice wood stock, what more could you have wanted? :(
