I Too have one of the initial production run UBACS with the green torso, bought it at the end of 2007. I prefer the brown torso ones.
@solid Snake: first thing i do when i get a new UBACS is remove all the padding, that ###### is too hot.

Thanks all for your advice, looks like i will steer clear of CA for now! anyone have any experience with the ARES G36C?
Darkchild

thought i'd post this here rather than start a thread. After my disappointment at being unable to purchase an SA80 from z1 i've decided to go full circle and buy a G36C (my first AEG was a TM G36C in 2002).
My question is simply, who makes the best one?
I appreciate any response.
EDIT: I'm only asking because i was going to go for a CA model but after the "CA quality" thread im not so sure...

i've been waiting 12 weeks for my Ares sa80 from zero one now.
they said it would take 3 weeks.
I'm going to cancel my order.

yep, it's MOLLE. It also comes with 2 straps to attach it to a belt should you wish to stabilise it, but as i throw it off and on a lot in the field, i took these off.

It's good, got it from Blackhawk, i dont wear it on the front so i wouldnt know, but it is comfy on my back.

@MinAmmo: Ross takes some pretty good shots doesn't he!

You wouldn't go to all the effort of filling a sandbag to use as a shooting rest (unless one happens to be there already) snipers carry beanbags for this purpose.
As for the defence thing, each man carries 1 sandbag, this is not enough by any stretch of the imagination to provide cover for anybody.
If you have time to shovel sand for sandbags, you have time to dig a trench.

What a REMFy response!
The reason we carry sandbags on our webbing is so the Reserve section in a platoon attack can ferry fresh mags to the firesupport section and take their empties back to be refilled.
Everyone carries one so anybody can be tasked to do this on short notice. Another common use for the sandbag is for the Section 2-ic to collect everybody's waterbottles up for replen when in a harbour area.

Looks great
But no water?
My water bottle is in my utility pouch (r/hand side)
Darkchild - Nice kit and loving the dpm. Were is your sa80? thought you were pimping it out with the all the stuff you could get your hands on.
matt
p.s By the way you have a realy scary eyes (the death stare).
Zeroone STILL have not got my SA80 yet
And i have scary eyes because im a scary person.
Never thought I'd see the day where Magpul and tropicals would be in the same picture. Really must get myself some one of these days, see what all the fuss is about, they surely must work quite well for summer skirmishing.
TBH im only wearing them because one of my SF buddies got them for me (trops are their working dress)
Darkchild, were those pics taken just before Private Hudson speech? And how accessible are those back mounted bandoleer pouches? Looks good for crawling about with.
I really need to get to a skirmish...I refuse to play dress up in the back garden.
the pouches are completely inaccessible. I have to take the bandoleer off to get to them. the point is, i can re-plen myself in the field with essentials like mags, ammo, batteries, without leaving the playing area and without carrying a daysack. It has exactly what i need in it.
I just switch stuff around when there's a lull in the battle.
WTF is the Private Hudson speech? the only Hudson i know off was in Aliens!

Alliness saves lives Brother!! There are more pics of me today in the "in the field at a game" thread (shameless plug)
Thanks for the compliment, i thought i'd mix it up a bit old school with the MOLLE gear, pleased at how it turned out.
I should have taken the shots at the end of the day when i was sweaty and covered in dirt though, would've looked much better!
EDIT: here's another one i like.
This is not posed by the way.

you people dont understand kit procurement. A UOR is a one of contract negotiated to sate a particular need, ie the need for better optics ala the ACOG. this was purchased with no doctrine in place, no pamphlet being written, no training package, no spare parts, no spare sights to train troops outside of theatre and no promise to Trijicon to purchase anything more.
the Elcan is the replacement for the SUSAT, it is a MUCH bigger contract, being developed with full support to completely replace SUSAT. (FYI, the Specters are more expensive than the ACOGs) The MOD have not spared expense in this case. It is a gleaming weapon sight, i wish i could get my hands on one.
As for the Picatinny top rail adaptor, i has an issue one that will be part of my L85 build when it finally arrives...

I'll put this here so people stop PM'ing me about it.
The British ACOG was supplied as you see it in pictures. The "mount" is fixed and is not removable, and was bought from Trijicon exactly how you see it. If you want a source on the mount, your only option is to ask trijicon themselves as we in the trials world dont care, as long as the kit meets its requirements.

Darkchild, would it be possible for you to get a few pictures of the Acog scope mount for me?
Just a thought .
Sorry bud, i dont readily have access to issued ACOGS, as they are not on trial and as they are UOR kit, they are in theatre or with operational units (ITDU only has 2 of them). My personal weapon at ITDU has a SUSAT on it.
@Panoptes: looking good there! I'm still waiting for mine

I work in the one place that ALL gucci infantry kit comes through, it'd be rude not to!!
EDIT: do you have any pics of your new ARES? Are they any different to the old ones?
Darkchild

^ darkchild when you get the sa80 post some pictures please.
I will do but be warned, mine's gonna be a little different.
Darkchild
-
Darkchild, i asked everyone publicly . I know the Acog is UOR but i prefer it to the look of the ACOG+ doctor, plus the fact that if i went with an elcan i would still have the same blody problem in that the model the Britarmy are procuring does not have an airsoft replica!!!
Back to square one.
Buy specter, put doctor sight on top. This is literally what the MOD are doing. The specter model is the older one with a fixed x4 mag (we didnt go for the variable magnification variant as it failed the cold weather trial and the adjusting levers snapped off on some examples).
As for the Doctor red dot, its screwed in top with a little machined bracket (and not very well machined, i might add), would still be easier to achieve than getting an ACOG sight mount.
When i get my Airsoft L85 (still waiting for ARES to send it) im just getting an specter and not bothering with the red dot.

nobody asked me. On a lighter note, if you want to be ahead of the curve, get an Elcan Specter, as its the next issue scope being phased in starting end of this year.
ACOGs were always a UOR (urgent operational requirement) and were never going to be fully supported.

My current setup, a mixture of old and new, the new pouches should hopefully look battered after a few skirmishes.
the rig is an old Warrior assault systems TMV in TAN that i sprayed and modified, the pouches are a mix of WAS, 5.11 and blackhawk.
As with all my loadouts, its all about practicality as opposed to looking pretty (except the patch )
