  1. I read today that DBoyi is releasing the stock as a separate item. DBoyi seems to make all their component parts available at some point, its surprising to me that they are making the stock available separately from the gun before marketing the full wood-stock version though.

  2. Guinness: I NEED that snowy pic in higher rez!

I have a pic thats old and unedited, but I kinda like it :>

  4. any developments guinness? i want a KAR98, but dont really want to buy a complete POS.

I cleaned all of the thick white lithium out and gave it a nice silicone spray wipe down, and repositioned the hop up rubber.

I just haven't had an opportunity to get outside and shoot it.

We got about a ft of snow between Christmas and yesterday here.

  5. that looks awesome guinness. i always thought those '47 pics on tantal looked beautiful. just get some proper laminated AK47 (not 74 like you have) wood (just laminated if not real steel) and re-stain and laquer it. maybe something like this re stained/laquered to that orangey colour in tantal's photos.

is that the same painting technique you used on your M500?

odd how IMO the oldest AK model looks the best in factory fresh condition. everything else looks better beat up a bit :P

    Thanks guys!

Actually, both the '47 and the '74 have had the steel wool treatment to cut the chalky oxidized layer of paint down, then rubbed with a clean cloth for a shine. So they both have had some 'aging' done to them. On the '47, it's no special painting technique, just a liberal use of silicone spray ;)

As for the furniture, I received the gun from my buddy that way, all I have done so far is to add the G&P MBK. I have been looking for RS stuff, but so far cannot find matching pieces- just the lower handguard.

  6. :P

So I wanted to get as close as possible to this:

  7. Guinness, have you had any problems with the gas unit leaking? Mine is leaking terribly, and I was wondering if it's something anybody else had a problem with. The leak is inside the gas unit, near where the barrel connects to the internals.

Negative, mine is not leaking. Sorry!

  8. It's a '72. Last year of the early baywindow body style but first year of the more powerful Type 4 pancake engine. I really love it. The bug is a '66 incase anyone was wondering.

Man Florida to Colorado... That must have been quite the adventure in a Volkswagen.

Yep- she carried all my worldly possessions too- A futon bed, 2 duffel bags full of clothes, and three cases full of cameras and photography equipment :D

It took three days to get from Jacksonville to Denver taking the 'northern route' up through Atlanta then over to St. Louis and through Kansas, the only problem I ever had with the van was the floor of the space in the back end where the battery sits was rusted out being a Florida car- so I would have to stop every now and then and check to make sure the battery wasn't about to fall out onto the highway lol

The only reason I sold it was my girlfriend was 4'8 and couldn't reach the pedals and shift the gears lol

....plus it didn't do so well in the mountains

  9. Ok, I have had mine for a little over a week now. I get perfect accuracy up to about 80-100 ft then 1 in every 3 shots hit the mark. So mine is on the money. Also took it to the local field and chrono'd it at a constant 334fps. Another thing about the striper clips, I can only ship them inside the US! I took them to the post office and tried to get an estimate for shipping for a guy in France and was told I couldn't ship gun parts outside of the country.

Well that is good news about the gun- I'm going to have my techie look at mine this weekend, so it will most likely be back up and running in no time! I Was hoping to get feedback from someone else with one.

    Thanks!

  10. it would definitely detract from the realism. and personally on that gun i would say the beefy AK74 muzzle break would look a LOT better than the AKM slant.

in the end it's up to you, but personally i would stick with the mean AK74 brake and add a few more small modifications, match up the finish, make it look weathered all over (with an overall sandblasted desert look), get a tourniquet and go for a minorly customised '80s afghan look. plus the whole loadout is pretty cheap and cool looking.

I appreciate it, but I'm not into the afgan and Russian do-rag look, sorry!

  11. Took some pix of my AIMS today to show how you should use a AK^^ And for those who wanted to see how the steelveted upper handguard looked on :)

Ok, here is where I ask for an education again-

GRIM!'s gun is a AIMS- It's his weapon that I got the inspiration for the vented handguard. I obviously don't have the 'Coat Hanger' folding stock or the 'Equus Asinus Phalus' front grip, but my n00bish eyes see the receiver as the same- so what makes his an AIMS and what makes mine an AK74? where are the differences in the receiver so I will know in the future?

    ...And beautiful weapon GRIM! :)

    Thanks!

  12. nice work guinness. the wood is looking awesome, not wonderfully authentic as the russians used dark red plywood (that looks like a solid lump to me) but it still looks great and is a great improvment on the Dboys' frankly plasticy looking wood.

as for varnishing the mag, i'd buy a couple of boxes of MAG midcaps first. a. because theyre cheap, effective mids. and b. because theyre more authentic that that hicap, since the reinforcement ridges at the front didnt appear until plum was starting to be used.

i still say you should make the finish on the heatsheild and semi gloss parts match up with the gloss effect of the reciver. after that heavily weather the lot, get a soviet tourniquet, make the tourniquet look nice and used then wrap it around the stock for a custom soviet afghan style gun :)

    Thanks man!

Question: If I replaced the '74 muzzle break with a slant, what if anything, would that make the gun? In other words is it acceptable to have a slant muzzle instead of that big honkin' AK74 break?

  13. http://www.copesdist.com/ak47.htm

the vented upper handguard/ gas tube like guiness' and grim's are 9/10ths down the page on the right hand column. 29.99 USD not bad, makes the rifle look sick.

how hard is it to install?

    Literally 1 minute-

On a Inokatsu or DBoyi (Since its a IKnowKetchup copy ;) ) just flip the take down lever on the gas block, remove the wooden top handguard, punch out the two pins holding the forward gas tube on the barrel to loosen it, install the new vented handguard with gas tube, replace the pins, return the take down lever to its correct position, wash, rinse, repeat!

I would not try it on a CYMA or other brand- they will require a lot of modification to the handguard- I had to do absolutely nothing to it to put it on the AKS74, and as a matter of fact, the forward lever on the barrel that helps hold the bottom handguard in now works better with the new gas tube than it did with the original wooden top handguard.
