  1. hmmm, guiness could you give me the demensions of the shells. and how wide the breech is? im going to design a hard leather shell catcher that will both save shells and allow you to use stripper clips. i have tons of leather (bladesmithing is fun lol) and ill also design it to clip on and off to the rifle so it wont be permanent. im 50 bucks away from getting the rifle. my friend offered to buy me one for xmas, but i have to pay for hk shipping. lol. and im laid off. curses.

but yes if i perfect the design i will do my best to make it efficient lightwieght and as out of the way as possible. shouldnt be hard i have plenty of materials to work with. and if all goes well i can sell them at a fair price (like 25 bucks) and buy more shells once i get the rifle. :P

Well you can already use stripper clips,

but I will measure the shell casings this afternoon :)

  2. I wonder if you can get a black aftermarket bolt handle. :P

Hmmm I don't even know where you can buy a real K98 stock, but I'd love to fit one on.

Well the bolt handle is an integral part of the bolt itself- the only part that separates (other than stripping the bolt down to springs and parts etc) is the round knob-

...what I'm struggling to say is...the bolt handle don't be coming off! :P

Now...I have been toying with the idea of trying my 'bluing' technique on this gun over the coming weekend- maybe the barrel and receiver and all- I know already that the bolt itself being a very 'smooth' chrome-like aluminum or whatever it is, just isn't going to hold the paint that well- however, if you look at the pics of the real-steel guns and bolt I posted on the other page, they show 'silvering' also. My main concern is the bolt handle itself- as most of the remarks about the gun concern the color of the bolt handle, I have been thinking about trying to work on that, but as it is also the single most 'handled' (pun intended :P ) part of the gun, I want to try and decide if it will be worth the effort.

I think the bluing effect on the barrel itself and breech/receiver will look great, especially after I add some 'wear', I'm just not sure about the bolt yet. As those of you that have received yours can attest, the bolt handle and bot itself, while they are certainly shiny, they still have a darker, almost graphite cast to them. It just doesn't show that way very well on film.

  3. And Guinness I sent out those striper clips today. Sorry for the delay but I had to go buy stamps and I've been swamped for the past couple of days, enjoy.

    Thanks man!

EviliBoba, know that your earlier rifle pic was part of the inspiration when weathering the K98- Thanks!

  4. 5.45x39 ;) . all AK (and even the subsonic 9mms for the AS VAL, VSS and VSK-94) are 39mm long. probably the best way to remember what is chambered for what is to think that the 47 just used chopped 7.62 rifle rounds, the AKM was just an improved 47 so uses the same round. as for the AK74, the russians developed a small, high velocity round to compete with NATO's 5.56, just remember that the 74 uses a similar diameter to the 5.56 NATO. as for the AK100 series, theyre chmabered for EVERYTHING, 7.62 R, 5.45 R and 5.56 NATO.

you'll pick it all up eventually :)

    Roger- got all that

    Excellent gun IMHO iloveics!

  5. Ya I used a bit too much linseed oil on my AKS-74U's wood grips.... is there a way to get rid of the stickiness?

    Thanks,

    -Blink

    Wow, not sure-

I have always applied it, left it on for maybe 15 to 20 minutes then wiped it off.

Did you end up just leaving it til it dried?

  6. Ah, I'll have to get some. Thanks.

Unless your doing a lot of guns- make sure you get the smallest container-

That is of course unless you like the smell of linseed oil in your garage/apt and plan on keeping it around as a room freshener :P

A little goes a long way and I still have a 3/4 full can ;)

  7. Yep. "In the white" means bare steel. The bolt on WWII Mausers was blued though. Only post-war Yugos are white. The only parts "in the white" on a WWII K98 should be the butt plate and those large take-down discs in the side of the buttstock. Trust me, I've restored more genuine WWII mausers than you can shake a stick at :D

Ohhh so you're the guy in the UK with all the guns eh? :P

Cool- thanks again for the tips- I'll be going after the butt plate and discs this week- although I saw a real-steel plate on eBay... hmmmm

  8. Question. Do you have a hard time to pull the bolt forward wfter you pulled it back? mine wont do it when i have shells in it but whitout shells its easy as hell damn gun =)

Hey man- I saw your question on the other page, apologies for not responding yet-

It sounds to me as though you have something blocking your breech or receiver- I took these pics, VERY poor quality so please excuse them, but perhaps you should disassemble the gun and have a look to see if there is something blocking the shells from going fully into the breech- ?

    Hopupandbreech1.png

    Hopupandbreech.png

    receiverandbreech1.png

Again, apologies for quality of the images, I was trying to photograph the hop up and barrel, so the focus was not on the near side of the breech itself- It's almost painful for me to post these :o

Anyway, in the last photo thats a bit better, you see the ramp to the barrel itself where the shells are loaded into- that 'V' shaped mark there is the track the nose of the shells have made being loaded into the breech-

As I said I would tear the gun down to its components and see if there is something keeping the shells from going fully into the breech.

Also, this is the simple answer and I'm sure you have already looked, but the shells aren't bent are they?

    Let me know what happens!

    Slainte!

Also, when you guys say "White, you mean bare metal right?

  9. no, milled recievers are for AK47s which like the AKM are also chambered for 7.62x39, so it would still be the correct mag.

Ahhh gotcha- I thought that was an AK74 mag which is the smaller 5.somethingXsomethingelse size....right?

    Toleya I was a n00b still :P

    :withstupid:

  10. well, lets assume it's meant to be a romanian AIMS with a russian handguard. the reciever is an AK47 style milled type, the AKM (base gun for the AIMS) was stamped steel. the gas tube is ventilated al-la AK47, for the AKM it was changed to no ventilated. the pistol grip is an AK47 one, and while i think very early AKMs had wooden pistol grips the majority had plastic. the bolt also appears to be AK47 style rather than the AKM which had a sliver cut out toward the back (like the AK74).

regardless, its a very nice looking gun iloveics

    wow!

Thanks for the detail and lesson!

I need to spend more time at Tantals

Oh wait- and isn't that the wrong magazine for that receiver too? I think I remember a whole rant about that earlier in the year

  11. Hey, Guiness, you can take all the paint off the butt plate and the circular take down discs in the side of the butt. These were left in the white on the WWII K98s. Only the post-war Russian armoury refurbed captured weapons have these parts blued :)

    Cool! Thanks for the tip!

When you say "white" I assume you mean bare metal and not actual white paint or something right?

  12. Looking at what you did to your Chinese Mossberg, I was expecting you to have painted the bolt black... I don't think real Kar98K bolts are chrome like that. :-p

Well I didn't worry about that for a couple of reasons-

1st, I ran into a bunch of images like the following that showed me that with wear the K98s fade to grey, and the Chinese bolt while very shiny, still has a dark cast-

    pix1443430640.jpg

    pix1366421015.jpg

    pix1443431078.jpg

Granted, those are 60 years old, but still- that shows what color a bolt handle will become with use and abuse- I think it's splitting hairs to say 'Well those aren't shiny metal though'- It's a $80 dollar gun ;)

The second reason is the Shotgun has about 6 layers of paint on it- the K98 bolt and bolt handle are going to get a lot more use and wear than 99% of the surface of the shotgun, look at that last picture of the real-steel K98 bolt- no way paint would stay on there-

I think it's fine the way it is- now if the engineers at Boyi are listening, you could think about a darker black anodization- that would be welcomed :)

  13. NICE GUINNESS! That stock almost looks like real wood, it's very hard to tell between the real stuff on your M1 garand and the K98! Do you mind If I ask your take on it's function as well? It obviously looks great...

I really like it so far- I need to do some in-depth testing, I wasted the entire weekend indoors because of snow- But hopefully this week I can get out somewhere and set up a target and see what distance accuracy and power are like.

  14. Guiness,

What camera are you using to take the pictures? the quality is excellent.

    Thank you sir!

    I soldier on with an old Nikon D100 and a Tamron 17-50 2.8 ;)

And Puding, I bought the vented handguard from a place here in the states called "Blackjack Buffers"

    http://www.blackjackbuffers.com/

I'm not sure if they will ship internationally or not- let me know if you want one and perhaps I can help-

My Plague- Agreed, at first I was thinking maybe keeping her stock because well I think she is pretty that way too-

but then I thought "What the hell am I thinking??" so we'll see how she looks after I 'process-ize' her ;)

TBH though, I'm kinda digging the light shade of the vented- To me it looks like what will happen as that part gets heated from use.

Cheers to everyone for your kind comments!

  15. Wow, excellent tutorial. This is definitely going under my bookmarks to await the arrival of a wood-stock M14. Thanks for putting the time and effort into writing this up.

 Thank you sir! That means a lot :)

Here are a couple better images from this morning of the K98- I also took a bunch of the process of doing the stock that I will edit and add later.
