  1. Piano,

Excellent review. It's nice to see people actually tearing down their AEGs and giving us a look at the insides.

In comparison to other MP5s you've handled (if any) how does the plastic of the SRC compare? It looks quite nice in your photographs, rather like the plastic on the PTW. I recently picked up a CA MP5 and my one issue with the gun is the creaky, plasticy foregrip.

  2. The problem there is though, that's all wild theory based with nothing other than magpul's statement saying it wasn't Ares. and since they refuse to say who actually does make it, few people will take their statement as fact.

With more and more evidence pointing to this being an Ares, the "denial theory" is nothing more than repetitive motion now, until they come out and put people straight and say who did make it.

This strikes at the heart of the issue here. The real "problem" is that PTS refuses to state who builds/supplies the components for their ACR gearboxes. This, in my mind, is a bit disingenuous given they are expecting customers to pay $450 for something with no/little knowledge about a critical component of the rifle.

I think you've really summed it up here. From a practical perspective, it really doesn't matter as long as it works, and it works reliably. If players are truly deciding to buy (or not to buy) this product depending on who manufactures the mechbox; sorry to say, they are very short sighted. They're better off not buying and move on.

I have to disagree here. A major factor of why people select something like an ICS MP5 over a Cyma MP5 or a G&P M4 over a Classic Army M4 is the reliability/durability of the gearbox. Obviously externals play a significant role. Airsoft is, afterall, a giant fashion show, but nonetheless players do select their rifles based on the purported reliability of the gun's gearbox. Everyone has harped on about how CA's reliability has gone downhill over the years. We're able to do that because the Classic Army (reportedly) builds and installs their own gearbox into their own guns. They do not (again reportedly) outsource their gearboxes to some other, unknown company and just concentrate on building a pretty shell (a la PTS).

The whole furor over this issue stems from the fact that people are attempting to assess the potential reliability of this rifle. If PTS had come out and said "our gearboxes are made by systema" there would be a huge debate over the quality of systema boxes, their reliability, their expense, etc. At least then people would be able to assess the reliability of the gearbox based on other platforms that have those gearboxes in them. Since PTS has hinted/denied (?) that their gearbox manufacturer is Ares, people are, naturally, trying to gauge the potential reliability of the ACR off of other rifles with similar gearboxes. If PTS would definitively say who their gearbox manufacturer is or at least give customers an idea of how the gearbox construction process for the ACR works (i.e. "we order such and such parts from so and so and then so and so assembles and QC checks them, etc) this whole debate would go away or could have been avoided.

To be honest, I (if I had the cash) wouldn't hesitate to pick up an ACR. Gearboxes are easy enough to fix and I'd simply play with the gun until something broken. Despite this, I do like to know who actually produced the parts in my gearbox. Otherwise it is sort of like buying an AEG off of the classifieds where the seller has stated "Oh, well, it's upgraded, but I don't remember with what..."

Personally I'd rather hear more about reviews/issues/capabilities of PTS' ACR in this thread instead of bickering of who manufactured the mechbox.

This I think we both can agree on.

EDIT: AnakChan and I have taken this to PMs

  3. Howdy,

I've been using mine for the last year and have not encountered any issues. Aside from the magazines being a tight fit, the rig performs perfectly. None of the stitching has torn or come out and it basically looks the same (with the addition of some mud) as when I bought it. I'd love to buy a second one in OD, but, as you mentioned, EA doesn't appear to be re-stocking it.

Despite its low price-tag, it is my favorite piece of kit. A great investment!

edit: ICS L85A2 creepin' in there at the bottom. Great gun, too!

  5. What is the feasibility of doing that CASV mod to an ICS L85A2. From what I understand, the ICS L85A2 handguards mount different than "normal" and as a result the CASV mod might not work...

    Anyone have any feedback?

  6. Sort of a ghetto-mod really.

I bought a CAA Triple Rail set for my M4 a long time ago (have sold the M4 since). The Triple Rail accessory has two fixed rails and one rail that can be attached using bolts to the top of the unit.

In this photo below you can see the CAA Triple Rail. The top rail isn't attach, but you can see where it threads into the unit. Here is a link which shows the top rail actually attached to the unit. (Note: the Triple Rail I linked to appears to only have attachment points at the front and rear... Mine, which must be older (?), has three attachment points, forward, back and middle).

    IMG_0911.jpg

The top rail has three protusions that jut out from the bottom. When attached to an M4 the protusions go through the handguard and the bolts attach through them to nuts that are sunk into the top of the Triple Rail itself. You can see where the nuts sink into the Triple Rail in the photos.

The slots on the L85A2 handguard were not the correct distance apart for all three protrusions to slide in. Therefore, I sanded down the center protrusion which allowed the front and rear protusions to slide through the slots in the handguard. I then used the included screws from the Triple Rail set to lock it all into place.

Similar, situation with the foregrip rail (shown below). Because of the spacing of the cutouts in the bottom of the L85A2 handguard I had to sand down two of the protrusions on the polymer rail that I had lying around. I sanded down the rearmost and the forward most, leaving the central protrusion intact. I then drilled small holes in the front and rear and used nuts and bolts to attach the rail. The central protrusion that I did not sand down I slid through one of the handguard cutouts and used a larger washer to keep the nut (which of course was smaller than the cutout) from sliding through.

I know that the purest are cursing me right now, but until ICS makes an LLM unit and the DD rail system, this is about as close as I can get.

  7. Why are people becoming so butthurt about airsoft accessories and colors? Geez-Lois guys, it ain't a big deal.

Blasphemy! The real operators are always color-coordinated! You can't go on an OP without your matching stock, handguards and magazine!

  8. is a video showing how to separate the upper from the lower.

The barrel assembly can be disassembled by unscrewing the large screws in front of the magazine well. Take those screws out and the entire barrel assembly can be slide forward and out of the gun. The "gas tubes" have holes that they slide into front and rear that add stability to the barrel. When reassembling the gun you've got to make sure that they seat properly. If they aren't slid into their appropriate holes at both the front and back end the barrel assembly can't be properly seated.

The wire assembly is two pieces with quick disconnects in between. The quick disconnects sit in front of the magazine well, but slightly before the actual rail system. When you separate the lower from the upper (as shown in the above video) the quick disconnects will probably pull out on their own accord.

  9. I have found that there is a very, very small amount of side to side wobble between upper and lower. In addition, there is also front and back movement. For example, when I shoulder the gun and press forward on the rail system I can feel the entire upper shift forward maybe a mm.

It could just me my gun specifically. I've noticed that the front receiver pin is not quite short of vertical in its hole. This tiny bit of misalignment (not my fault, has been this way since I received the gun) could be the cause of the trouble.

That said it isn't really a huge deal. In general fiddling with the gun it is, of course, noticeable. During actual skirmishes (and CQBing around my house :D) it isn't noticeable.

  10. In an earlier post I wrote that the

QD sling mount pulls out really easily of the rear, left mount hole...

Does anyone else have this problem?

Is the problem with the actual QD fitting? Or is it with the actual QD mount hole built into the gun?

  11. Beast, I suggest you take your questions over to the Dboys KAC PDW thread.

Possible solution: Look up into the magazine well. See the wires? Make sure they are positioned so that they aren't being crushed by the magazine and preventing it from locking into place.

  12. Question:

When opening the stock, returning it to its full extension, is it important to depress the locking button? Does not doing this wear out the catch on the rear of the receiver?
