  1. Additional review of Spectrum Pyrotechnic products

Arnie-Geddon 2005 has just finished and I was the pyrotechnic expert for the event. All pyrotechnics we used were supplied by Spectrum and here's how they went.

First off, EVERY SINGLE ONE detonated as planned. I had a 100% success rate with the pyrotechnics supplied and considering I used up to 200 grenades, maroons and smokes, that is an excellent record. About 100 additional grenades (the green bodied "dry pea-filled" grenades) were given to players free of charge and a few did actually fail to go off. On inspection of one or two of them, it appears they were struk far too hard and the sulphur tip was torn off before the secondary fuse ignighted properly. Still, it is a very good success record.

The in-game pyrotechnic maroons were supplied in 2.5 gram, 5 gram, and 25 gram versions. The "gram" value refers to the number of grams of flash-powder contained inside the device. The 2.5 gram model was equivalent to a Mk5 Thunderflash, the 5 gram model was equivalent to a Mk9 grenade, and the 25 gram devices were just massively loud. Due to restrictions put on us by the local SAS regiment after Thursday's heightened Terror Alert status, we were unable to detonate any 25 gram maroons - they would have been just too loud. Even the 5 gram devices were pushing the limits somewhat. However, the 25 gram versions were used underground to cause an amazing explosion that threw dirt a good 20 feet in to the air, with minimum noise. The 5 gram models were also used to create an "Air-Strike" (my own invention). Basically, 10 of these maroons were buried in the ground in a staggered line and hooked up to a custom built 10-way rotary detonator. Once the Airstrike was called, all 10 maroons were detonated one after another, moving up the line and throwing dirt in to the air. The sound resembled a silenced M60 HMG, and visually, the effect created was a realistic small-scale airstrike. Done right, it is a very safe effect and can REALLY produce a great atmosphere for players in the game. I certainly had a lot of comments about how great it was.

Spectrum have also started making some small smoke grenades. About the same size as smoke grenades you have used before, they throw out a good covering layer of smoke and last noticably longer than competetive devices produced by other companies. They are great value for money.

The two most notable grenades that Spectrum produce are their large smoke grenades (large green canisters with the cosmetic pin and ring), and their revolutionary "Stun Grenade". The smokes throw out an outstanding amount of smoke that will fill almost any room, and the weight allows accurate deployment of the device.

The stun grenade again has a perfect weight for accurate use, and it is an excellent "Base-Clearance" grenade. Picture the setting: A base is covered with scrim netting and has 3 enemy players inside. You throw the grenade accurately on to the roof, which then falls through the netting. The players inside shout "GRENADE!!!" and rush out of the structure. Smoke fills the base and then 4 bangs occur, knocking any nearby players out of the game. As the base is still filled with smoke, the base is unusable by the enemy for a few minutes after, as they would not be able to see accurately enough to use it as a fire-base. This is a very handy grenade and all of the ones used at the event went off perfectly.

Congratulations to Spectrum for making some excellent pyrotechnics, for sponsoring the pyrotechnic presence at Arnie-Geddon 2005, and for supplying them to players at breakthrough prices.

NOTE: Do NOT try to use electric maroons yourself unless you have the relevant training and experience necessary to do it safely. Static electricty generated by your body, vehicles, and other factors can prematurely detonate, leading to potentially devastating injuries. While these devices are exciting when used professionally, they are very dangerous, even to those who have used them before.

  2. Yeah, this one is a good 'un. Top tweaking :)

Suggestion: Can the rep reminder be bumped to the left of the PM reminder (so the "x new messages" text is far right again)? It's just that I haven't noticed I have had new PMs a few times, and the "My reputation" text would read better next to the "My Assistant" text.

Just a thought, not essential ;)

  3. Banned users aren't searchable usually because they were banned for a reason - usually pointless posting, abusing behaviour or dishonest trading. Why would anyone want to seek out their contributions???

Locked threads are still searchable, but not specifically by the fact that they have been locked. Again, searching JUST for locked threads is pointless because threads also usually get locked for a purpose - be it abusive content, pointless spam, or arguments that just go round in circles until everyone is annoyed - kinda like this one ;)

  4. Ummmm, yes. Well, it's a good point in theory, but we all make mistakes from time to time. A couple of days ago, I gave a warning point to the wrong user, then tried to reverse it, but didn't notice that the "Increase Warn" option was still selected. The new warn stated my apology, but increased the innocent user's warn another point. I then had 2 to remove. Did I feel stupid (sorry "The Bushman") :D

This error on editing has existed since the system was added. It is just something that Arnie has not got round to fixing so far, but I am pretty sure it is on his extensive "To-Do" list ;)

  5. R22- if you had the choice of another pfc or an airsoft gun, which would it be?

Im after an armalite but i cant decide whether to get a marushin m16a1 or a 6mm airsoft. Suppose you cant hit anything with a pfc....

It depends on what I was doing. As it is a couple of months before AG05 and I have no filming requirements at the moment, I would go for an Airsoft gun. If I was maiking a film however, it would be another PFC gun.

  6. Personally, (and just to balance Crazy_Harry's point of view), I like the reputation system.

When a user makes the effort to post useful information, it gives them a nice feeling when they see that someone thought enough of that post to give them a rep point. They then make that same effort on more occasions and the community benefits. All the time, the users getting the valued rep points feel better and better, further enjoying the Arnie's experience. Everyone benefits - everyone has more fun here.

People who gain points without putting in the effort are only kidding themselves. They get little to no enjoyment from the points they get because they engineered their acquisition.

True, some people abuse the system by neg-repping people to retaliate or get one over on another user. Well, I say that we as mods should be tougher on these people - don't let them ruin a perfectly good system for the rest of us. I would be happy saying that if anyone is caught abusing the rep system or giving un-deserved points (either positive or negative), then from this day forth, they get a 5 day account suspension and 10% warning points. After all, abuse of the rep system is specifically mentioned as a no-no in the forum rules.

Let's not be beaten down by the thoughtless and angry people - we stand, we fight, and we keep our rep system.

    *gets off soap box* :D

  7. Odd kind of observation, but here we go.

The PM system is pretty reliable, granted. However, I have had several PMs get "lost" in the system after sending (i.e. they never arrive). The vast majority of these "lost" PMs have happened when I have requested a copy be saved in my Sent Items folder. Is this a coincidence, or just a freak occurence?

Just thought I'd mention it ;)

  8. Yup, rep points can still be seen in people's profiles - ergo, the database is still there. It seems the rep-point engine is merely unavailable.

I doubt it was 100% intentional though, as The "Find Me" function is ALSO broken. Click the "Find Me" link next to people's post and you will see that THAT engine is also off-line.

I think a server software upgrade has been done that has reset the links to these two features (or something). It WILL be looked at soon. ;)

  9. There is a shed-load of html-code in Rob's signature. I have spoken with him about it, but neither he, nor the moderators have the ability to fix it, as the same code that is screwing up the pages are also screwing up the settings screen.

I have reported this post to Arnie as important, but he is a very busy chap at the moment. He will most likely have to alter the database manually to fix this so it may take a little while.

However, this problem does NOT affect Internet Explorer Browesrs, so you will not notice a problem unless you are using Firefox or some other browsers that use the same display coding as Firefox.

Motto: Upgrading your browser is all well and good, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it ;)

IE has always worked nicely for me and the new versions are pretty darned good.
