So a few months ago I asked DB Customs to cut me a tight bore for my Tanaka Hi Power. Not the shortest route for a few FPs, but the accuracy results more than made up for it. Here are the full results.

Here are the full results for the Tanaka Hi Power:

Chrono results: Toytec .20s, XCortech Chronograph, 70 degrees, room temperature magazine, full

    Stock:
    1 - 290.6
    2 - 297.9
    3 - 295.5
    4 - 294.5
    5 - 296
    6 - 294.1
    7 - 291.5
    8 - 295.5
    9 - 293
    10 - 293.2

    Average: 294.18

    DB Custom
    1 - 301.8
    2 - 304.9
    3 - 306.6
    4 - 303.9
    5 - 302.9
    6 - 298.6
    7 - 302.7
    8 - 302.4
    9 - 304.8
    10 - 300.7

    Average: 302.93

So power wise there was a gain of almost 6 fps on average. It also leads me to believe that the stock barrel is probably a 6.03 or tighter, not the "normal" 6.08 inner diameter. I believe this due to the smaller jump in fps and the consistency of the shot to shot changes on the stock barrel.

Accuracy wise it went a lot better. 6 shots where taken from a rest at 20ft, using green gas, on a full mag and .25 KSC bbs.

    Stock:

6 shot spread was 3 1/2". If we throw out one shot it does drop down to 2".

    With the DB Customs barrel:

The 6 shot spread was a much tighter 1.75", and if we throw out a flier, it drops down to 1.25". So in terms of accuracy it is certainly a winner by far.

Tanaka revolvers are the king of fps, but man do they take work to get shooting correctly. All three of mine require me to add a lot of hop, and then raise the rear sight. Man I wish they would fire closer to the point of aim. One more reason I prefer GBBs, the Tanaka and Marushin hop ups are bunk. I actually care about accuracy now, and it is a bit depressing.

Almost completely fixed the irregular fps. Had to crank down hard on the trigger spring screw. Now it shoots consistently from the second shot on. Almost always the first shot is low. With the addition of the KM tight bore, it clocks a pretty consistent 320-330fps. I think that's pretty good since the inner barrel is just about as long as my little finger. The KM didn't really boost fps as much as I would have liked (only about 10fps on the top) but it did make the shot to shot consistency tighter. Good, cheap upgrade, but I wonder what a 6.01mm would do. I think I am going to have Dwayne Dees cut me one for my Red Hawk, no real reason to spend the time and money with how short the M500 barrel is. Does make me wonder how a 8.3" would shoot. I wish I didn't think the 10.5" was so ridiculously ugly. Of course the ulginess od the Detonics didn't stop me from pre-ordering it.

Speaking of the Detonics, I really need to tear it down to send the barrel out. Just too lazy these days. I also need to run the comparison testing with the TM 1911, see what parts can be swapped around. Maybe tomorrow night.

Other than working on the M500 (only about an hour's worth of work) I spent most of the night answering PMs about custom builds. I have been doing a lot of research for not that many jobs. It gets a bit old, but if I don't put the work in, then there will be no new projects for people. If you are reading, and want a custom GBB built, drop me a PM. We can work something out.

My aeg builder swung by today to pick up my VFC. Soon enough I will be completely out of the aeg business. AEGs are fun to think about, but just not my cup of tea. One day I will build a high ROF aeg, but I am sure I will just sell it too.

It has been a great two days in terms of airsoft for me, both in terms of client work and with my own collection.

The final pieces arrive for a client's gun. Got to button down the hatches and finish the build. With some light tuning and my current favorite internal bits, the gun has really come around. It is nice to find that what I think to be true, continues to be the right choices. I like certain companies for certain parts. PDI for barrels (but DB Customs might be a better option as he will custom cut barrels). PGC for metal bodies, especially for TM bodies. KM for Hi Flow valves. And the king, Shooters Design for slides, springs and internals. I really think that SD parts are the standard, some will be better, but they are the bare minimum when it comes to fitting and function.

I also swapped in a Proud buffer set up into my Hi Capa 6.0. Man did it liven up the action. Before it had a monstrous kick, heavier than my old DE Hard Kick, but the return was just a little off. The big heavy slide just lagged that tiny little bit, just enough to make it seem slow. The buffer has really livened the return to the point that it still kicks (obviously not as much as before) but enough to feel solid, but the cycle time is drastically shortened. The action actually feels close to how the gun shoots with the ABS slide and a recoil spring. Snappy, and now it is really accurate. I managed to put six shots in under an inch at 5m. Well worth it, there really is something to short stroking a slide.

My next GBB project just might be another TM Hi Capa 5.1, but with a short stroked recoil guide and an ABS slide. Man that set up is going to fly. I might look into removing as much recoil force as possible, but part of me wonders if that will make it too bland in terms of shooting fun. I am going to try and find a Tanio Koba six inch slide so I can run the same recoil and barrel set up as in my SVI, for maximum accuracy and power, but with the super cycles speed from using the ABS slide. I could also opt for a Nine Ball 5 inch slide and run a PDI Comp. We shall see what I end up doing. Before then there are a number of little bits and pieces I need to buy to finish a few of my current guns.

I also received my second hand cannon, and I must say I am really impressed. The Marushin Ruger Super Black Hawk 10.5" is a monstrous gun in just about every way. Huge in the hand, but surprisingly balanced, the gun manages to feel correct. For some reason my hands fit the single action army grip. On top of that it shoots awfully straight for a Marushin. I don't know if it is a LD-2 gun, but I suspect it is, but this particular model shoots where you aim it. Pretty close to the point of aim, but it does throw out a flier now and again, and I mean a true flier. I can live with that. My Constrictor won't shoot anything but fliers, my P210 is worse. Seems more than strong enough to handle propane, it is a monster in terms of power as well. When I first chrono'd it I actually didn't believe the numbers since Snowman had such low numbers. Mine, in sunny CA, with .27 8mms will shoot consistently over 440fps. That is huge.

Not half bad looking either. With the Marushin wood grips, the gun looks the part. The stock grips were awfully plastic, like all Marushin grips, but the new wood grips really up the look. They also look much nicer than my Constrictor grips, even the Ruger medallions look nicer.

Never blogged before, but it is nice to have a place to log the work I am doing on my own guns as well as some client projects.

Right now in the works is finishing my TM Hi Capa 6.0. I just need to finalize my hammer choice and it will be completed. Swapped to a 6.01mm PDI tight bore and saw a jump of 15 fps on average, with less variation between shots. I still believe the tighter the barrel, the better the power, accuracy and it really helps stabilizes fps fluctuations. I have also found that Hi Flow valves help in this as well.

Still waiting on finishing details for my Maruzen PPK/S. Nice Carom Shot Pearl grips to finish the look. I am seriously considering having DB Customs cut me a tight bore for this gun as well. I need to receive my first set of custom barrels though, going on three weeks. I really hope they exhibit the same performance characteristics as the PDI barrels, it will be nice to have another avenue for true custom barrels in the future.

I am also going to help him mock up a TM Detonics barrel. Once I shoot it enough to be able to leave it in pieces while he mocks it up. Seems to be a bit more complicated than TMs of the past, but should be a good future product for him, and a good piece of work for myself.

Completely obsessed with Tanaka revolvers right now. Funny how I tried them out in the past and found them lacking, but now I have a better appreciation for them. I still prefer a GBB, but the power, fit and finish on them is amazing. Marushin revolvers are a blast as well, a Tanaka that used shells would be my dream revolver. I can't seem to decide what to acquire next. I want either a Tanaka M500 3+1 or a Marushin Ruger Super Black Hawk. I really wish Marushin guns shot straight, then the choice would be clearer.

I have a few client guns I am working on. I have a Guarder 1911 that I am fixing, since Evike managed to make a mess of the install. I can't believe how poor their work was. Maybe they just didn't like this guy, but man I would raise hell if it was my gun. Got all the functionality and cycling problems worked out. Now I just need to test the various hop up rubbers he has. Find the best option for his gun, and hopefully figure out what I will be using in the future for long range accuracy.

I also got to finish building a Hi Capa 4.3 for someone. Arrived about 75% done, but once I sorted it all out, fixed the blowback unit and smoothed out the trigger, even with minimal upgrades the gun is a blast to shoot. I can't say enough about the actual performance of the latest Maruis. I do find it amazing that through the interweb I have managed to build up enough trust to have people send me their expensive replicas and beyond that, have them pay me to work on them! Funny how these things work out. I hope I continue to have this good fortune and good will.

I have a few things arriving soon. A new Tanaka Super Redhawk, the DB Custom barrels (custom cut Tanaka Browning Hi Power, Proto-type WA SCW2 and SCW3 tight bores), and then whatever I choose for my next project. I am still kicking around jumping back into Glocks. I want to build a straight frame G34, but swap the slide for a BoomArms Custom Glock 17 slide so I can run the FireFly Accuracy barrel/hop up. I hate Glocks (bought, built and then promptly sold 5 of them) and generally dislike KSC guns in general, but this new barrel/hop up combo is just fascinating to me. I might need to jump in and try it.

Otherwise I don't really know what other GBB there is that strikes my fancy to build. I may just have to buy another Hi Capa and work on that. I have a few ideas left for an interesting Hi Capa. I want to build a Limcat Custom, but with a straight outer barrel. I also want to build a speed gun utilizing either a Tanio Koba slide or a Nine Ball. I really want to see the performance of a fully tuned ABS slide. We shall see where I land. Until then I am hoping to finalize two more client projects, hopefully soon.

Got to take a few days off, booked out of town to spend some time with my Pops and his new house. It was nice not to be tied to the interweb or work for a few days, but man the PMs and orders just piled up. I was only gone for a few days, but I came home to like a million things to do. Thankfully I was able to button down everything I had already signed up to do before I left. Unfortunately I might have lagged on some communications that might have turned into customer work, oh well.

In client work news, I got the DE in and for once that thing is broken. I don't know if it is un-useable now, but man it is in fact broken. I think I am going to see if I can re-assemble it with the broken rear sub-frame. The safety won't work, but I hope the gun will still shoot. I also hope it won't just keep breaking parts.

I got the parts in for the IPSC gun, hopefully the base gun will show up tomorrow. I also might have to fit another Limcat Comp set-up which should be interesting. Funny how things just keep building up and up.

I got some parts in for myself as well and finally got to run some Hi Flow tests with both of my Glocks. If you ever wanted to check out results for Hi Flows, check em out here. It really goes to show that the only way to know for sure is to test, test and re-test. KM valves are great in some guns, Guarder valves work great in others. I keep hearing good things about the Tanio Koba valves, but I have yet to test them. I guess I really have to.

I also have been collecting barrels for a Hi Capa/1911 tight bore shoot off. I might be way too lazy to actually finish the test up, but who knows.
