Some background--

Japan's Studio Anima publicized its computer-animated adaptation ofMotofumi Kobayashi's Cat *suitcase* One manga at Tokyo International Anime Fair this week. ADV Manga released three volumes of the original Cat *suitcase* One manga under the title Apocalypse Meow in North America. The manga follows three American soldiers — Bota, Perky and Rats — during the Vietnam War. The trio just happen to be cute animals in the Cat *suitcase* Onerecon group.

Greatest Thing Harry Has Seen Today! CAT *suitcase* ONE!!!

Hey folks, Harry here... Johnny Wad just dropped me a link that literally has me being the happest schoolboy in town today! War films have gotten stale... So the Japanese invents CAT *suitcase* ONE... A film about quite fluffy bunnies fighting evil Camels in a desert with full on assault rifles, RPG, along with other lethal death *suitcase*! This has been known to horrify some, to the delight of many others. However, the main reason I'm posting this is that... well... I desperately need to know more about this! It really is the greatest thing I've seen today!

On Motofumi Kobayashi's "Apocalypse Meow," and preview of "Cat S--- One"

Don't let a glance fool you. This is serious work.

RogueScholar's diary :: ::

Thinking it was a joke, I checked a weird graphic novel named "Apocalypse Meow" out of the library last year. I found it to be an impeccably well researched and detailed war book of high academic calibur. Yesterday, I was stoked to see someone post a preview of the "Cat S--- One" series on reddit. The animated images in "Cat S--- One" are as photo-realistic as one could possibly get with rabbits dressed as US Marines. The terrain is undoubtably Afghanistan. One of the first sequences is a group of camels executing a bound rabbit, as seen through a sniper's scope. The violence is harsh, abrupt, and brutal. At 2:24: "Botas" and another rabbit are carrying a third on a stretcher, (probably "Packy,") when they hear an explosion, maybe five hundred meters behind them, and if you watch it, watch carefully, for the explosion is fully developed by the time the sound reaches them-which means the animators took the speed of sound into consideration. (Um. I'm an Iraqi Freedom Vet. Though the culture and terrain bear significant differences, little details like that are f-ing spooky.) So, if "Apocalypse Meow" is any indication, I expect "Cat S--- One" to be better technical combat footage replication than anything Hollywood put out since "Blackhawk Down." Only with rabbits. And you know Richard Adams' "Watership Down" was truly hardcore.

So why the anthropomorphism?

In a review of "Blackhawk Down," a critic whose name I wish I could remember said Ridley Scott didn't seem as interested in why people fight as how. Chances are, in viewing any war footage, the viewer's taken sides within and without. Are you an American? Are you for or against the war? You're on a side. You're on sides within and without. I wonder if Kobayashi's athropomorphic style didn't provide him with a kind of psychological blister that allowed him to focus on the technical action of the combat itself without bothering with the politics. The Americans in "Apocalypse Meow" are rabbits. The Vietnamese are Cats. The Chinese are Pandas. The Russians, bears. Does this make it possible for Kobayashi to crystalize combat behavior without all the political filters? It does with me. I can barely watch the news anymore, but I must've watched this little clip ten times. Don't let the premise fool you, "Cat S--- One" is a serious piece of work. There is actually a QUITE FUNNY REASON WHY the Americans are rabbits in the Cat *suitcase* One series. The Japanese word for rabbit is “うさぎ” which can be romanized as “USAGI.” Do you see where this is going? Yes. USA + GI = USAGI.

Anyway, I was actually very surprised at this video’s attention to detail, and I can see some hardcore Japanese gun-nuts are working on this one. The movements of the rabbits actually look very tactical, and the transition drill(switching to one’s sidearm and firing in case the primary is not operational) looks well done.

Which is hysterical. I mean, these are rabbits, armed with top-notch military hardware and looking well-trained and well disciplined. Rabbits!!!

You’re right about the gun nuts stuff. The subculture for it in Japan makes even the stereotypical NRA member look amateurish. Reminded me a lot of the Metal Gear Solid series in that respect. I can see SoF wannabes, Grognards, and Military Enthusiasts arguing over the tactical and weapon choices already…haha
