AG1212
I'm doing what I'd consider a 'light' upgrade and just need to sort out what piston head and piston combo would work best. It's an old JG ver.2 6mm gearbox that's going to be running on an m90. I'm going to leave the standard gears as their quite decent, and I'm not really going for a high speed set-up per se. I'm ordering from ehobby so both items need to come from there; I've singled out the madbull pistons but I heard that they are cac from semi-reliable sources, any truth to that? and I also found this piston head which looks Interesting, any thoughts? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
ctres94
That's a pretty interesting piston head, but you probably want to go with a polycarb or POM one for overall durability of the gearbox shell. The aluminum is simply not needed, so the difference in weight would only have negative effects. Depending on whether you already have a bearing spring guide, you may or may not need a bearing piston head. If you have a bearing spring guide, the bearing on the piston head is really not that necessary, and often just adds weight. As for which one to get from ehobby, it probably dosen't really matter since your setup is very gentle anyways, so a cheap element or action one would probably be just fine. If you do go with the aluminum one for whatever reason, you may want to add sorbo to the cylinder head for increased durability. As far as your options for pistons from ehobby, the shs/super shooter brand pistons are said to be pretty great. Something like this would probably be perfect for you setup. It is a clone of the highly praised azimuth piston. http://shop.ehobbyasia.com/super-shooter-full-steel-1-teeth-piston-clear-blue.html There are also other versions with more steel teeth, but they really wouldn't be necessary in your setup, but here are some links. http://shop.ehobbyasia.com/super-shooter-full-steel-7-teeth-piston-clear-blue.html http://shop.ehobbyasia.com/super-shooter-full-steel-14-teeth-piston-clear-blue.html shs also makes a supercore clone, but all of the shs pistons appear to be out of stock. http://shop.ehobbyasia.com/shs-15-teeth-7-steel-teeth-piston-blue.html
AG1212
@ctres94 Very much appreciated! I was a bit put off by the luminance and transparency but it actually seems quite decent! Thing is, I am using a standard gear set which isn't necessarily industrial grade steel, so maybe it would be best going with as few metal teeth as possible or do you think its a non-issue? I think it is a non-issue. JG make some really strong, powerful gears. I also want to say that I really like JG's pistons, if it doesn't have too much wear, and it's cream colored, I'd just keep that. They are very strong and will hold up for a long time with an M90 spring. The piston heads are also decent. However, I love modify polycarb piston heads. But, like ctres said, just get a polycarb piston head. Your set up isn't all that strenuous, and it should hold up just fine.
AG1212
Cool! good to know, yeah the original piston/piston head aren't exactly in the best shape. Thanks for the help.
