AK Woodworking Tutorial

So, what do we need to start?

a pencil an a piece of wood about the thickness of the barrel (a few mm thicker is ok) :-)

100_0422.th.jpg

Lay the wood parallell to the barrel , take your pencil and mark the parts that shall be removed

100_0423.th.jpg 100_0424.th.jpg

Then you take a saw (with small teeths) and remove the parts that should be removed...

the slot that will sleeve around the front of the reciver is made by doing a few parallell cuts...

100_0425.th.jpg 100_0426.th.jpg

Insert your knife in one of them and bend the wooden "chips" loose...

the surface doesnt have to be smooth since it will be obscured pu the wooden hump of the AKSU handguard (or the plastic retainer in case of a AK47)

Mark the with of the tab that will go inside the AK body.

100_0429.th.jpg

Take your knife and cut like the image show (0.5 -1mm deep)

then you cut against the main part of the wood to remove a piece, repeat until the tab is the right size.

The tab is probably a bit too big so gently make it smaller .

You should make it slightly wedge shaped too.

100_0431.th.jpg

Insert the piece of wood into the slot in the reciver.

Then you should have something that look like this:

mark out the lenght that the lower handguard should be.

if possible, use a existing lower, but you can also use the upper.

its a good idea to mark both the lenght of the visible part and the lenght of the part that should go inside the front retainer.

This was requested by Jules in my Ar SF thread

hope it will come in handy!

Off to take more pics!

lets cut and saw out the profile...

10004539va.th.jpg

i decided that i will add a rail on this grip, therefore i made the grip real slim...

time to begin with the sides.

mark a line that allow enough protrutions at the lower back corner.

lay the piece flush to the upper part and mark where the L shaped part should begin.

10004552sp.th.jpg

something like this:

10004577lj.th.jpg

sadly it was darn close to impossible and hold it while photoing :-P

now we can mark where we should cut off this wood piece too.

about 3mm in from where the retainer begins.

Mark the inner profile. This mark will make it easyer when you glue the pieces together.

10004586lx.th.jpg

to make a copy for the other side, lay your piece on another wood piece and draw the outline

10004595ve.th.jpg10004608uj.th.jpg

now its time to remove some material on the inside of our newly created side panels.

mark the minimum lenght of the slot we shall make:

10004610au.th.jpg

and the profile of our slot:

10004627jd.th.jpg

something like this:

fill in the lines , and start carving!

10004645cd.th.jpg10004658to.th.jpg10004663jg.th.jpg

But be careful!

10004687zm.th.jpg

when both sides are done the sidepanels sould lay flush with the center piece:

10004718wu.th.jpg

time to glue the pieces together...

i prefer to do them one by one, that way youll prevent the pieces sliding around.

and dont use too much glue, that will only make things tougher.

10004724ag.th.jpg10004730of.th.jpg

clamp the pieces together and let the glue dry.

(go and write a tutorial or something while you wait ;-)

Repeat on the other side:

Time to do some more carving...

first we carve down the sides ... some cutting with a saw will reduce your workload.

10004781qj.th.jpg10004795mh.th.jpg

when you carve the center of the piece , the easyest method is carving against yourself, but be careful...

10004812hg.th.jpg

lets mark how deep we can go...

place our piece as it should sit, and place the retainer the wrong way.

mark the outline

10004826tw.th.jpg

something like this:

10004840jk.th.jpg

then we can continue to carve away some wood.

10004857ii.th.jpg

when we have made the piece as thin as it should be in the front we can mark out how deep the part that the retainer should hold.

10004877sb.th.jpg

start by cutting against the fibers

10004889ta.th.jpg

then with the fibers

10004896lf.th.jpg

after a while it should look something like this:

if we did everything right the retainer should fit.

10004916jm.th.jpg10004938nd.th.jpg

then we can mark how deep we could go at the rear part:

10004947fd.th.jpg

so lets continue and work towards the shape we want...

10004976ua.th.jpg

be careful not to cut paralell to the fibres .. .then the knife will act as a wedge and pry loose wood... this is fine in the beginning , but leaves a ugly surface, and the chipping is hard to control...

try to always cut at a slight angle...

when we get the shape we want then we bring out the sanding paper:

10005004me.th.jpg

you should at least have 2 types. A fine grain and a rougher ...

follow the contoures and the fibres...

After a while it might look something like this:

10005013ub.th.jpg10005029wh.th.jpg10005037yj.th.jpg10005054hx.th.jpg

Cost: <$0,5

Time: ~6 h

Enjoy!
