  1. Mine vented the mag's worth of gas on the first trigger pull twice with the loop pressed forward this morning, where it didn't yesterday. Hold off on this one, further testing needed.
  2. Looks good. Just occured to me that most folks will be asking for a CQB length inner barrel. In that instance an M16 length inner is unnecessary - that was for guys like me that wanted an M4 length inner barrel. M4 length/363mm is plenty long for a 10.5" inner. Ironwolf - with the exception of the out of spec barrel nut (workaround in the original post), the gun will take real steel forearms. The OD of the barrel is correct for my samson low profile gas block but the front sight post pin cuts are the AEG dimension as opposed to real steel. I'd say you're in good shape mounting
  3. uscmCorps - I just grabbed one of my old stock barrels that's in my parts box. It's a 6.08 brass barrel. A tightbore would display even higher fps as you'd imagine. He lives up the hill from me, so I just asked him if the machine shop was open (code talk for 'HELP!') and he used the stock WA barrel as a basis for the cuts. Prom makes nice inner barrels but they're steel as opposed to brass, which is obviously harder to work with. I'd go brass, but that's cause I've seen him cuss at steel parts being a PITA to work with on his setup. Remember you want an M16 length barrel to start wit
  4. Called Mark, the gunsmith (real gunsmith, not pretend like me) who did the lathe/mill work to report the findings over the chrono. I could hear him rolling his eyes at the velocity pickup. I think he said, 'that thing better be as accurate as you say, looks like you've got yourself another damned DM gun!' He told me $50 bucks labor/machine time plus actual shipping. Customer sends the barrel to him, he'll do the work, return the barrel. PM me if you're interested and I'll provide bona fides and so on if a custom barrel is something you have to have before they start storming out of
  5. Great news! The machine work required to turn a stock AEG barrel into an M4 length WA barrel was worth it! Outside temp is 79 degrees F a moment ago. Gun does 411-417 fps on Propane (mag was fairly chilly, too) with black AE .25s. These were the same BBs with which I obtained the chrono readings in the initial review. No other changes to the gun. The partially jacked up hop up unit apparently does not interfere with the velocity imparted to the BB. Or, if it does, it does not detract substantially from the gain I am seeing with the longer barrel. Accuracy appears to be left i
  6. Remove pistol grip, remove hex screw in bottom of lower, remove bulkhead that holds buffer latch and selector detent, remove selector lever, reverse.
  7. Well, that's very kind, but I doubt it would happen. Back a ways in the news thread about this gun I mentioned emailing G&P about building reinforced parts. They said they planned to release parts in the future. Whatever that means. I don't mind paying to upgrade a gun like this. It'll be a few months (fingers crossed) before the whole guts of the gun are replicated in quality metal parts, though. I have other toys to play with in the meantime, hehe. As for a parts list, basically, any part that moves or suffers an impact with every pull of the trigger is a candidate of some m
  8. Update - Upper 160 or so degrees of the lip around the rear of the hop up unit are gone. My hop up looks like dogjumpjump's only the right half of the rear lip is gone, as well. I noticed the gun was jamming and couldn't really figure out why. BBs would fall out the end of the muzzle after a shot. I believe the core issue is having too much hop up dialed in and BBs not being able to feed past the hop up rubber, resulting in a jam. More reason to keep the rubber clean. I have to clean everything, install the M4 length barrel I got machined up yesterday (it's only a 6.08, n
  9. To get the hop up unit out: Remove Upper Receiver from Lower Remove RIS Remove Barrel Nut Slide Outer Barrel forward (not off, you'll damage the o-ring on the end of the inner barrel)) You will see the inner barrel going into the hop up unit. From here you can gently tug on the hop up unit to get it to slide forward and out of the upper receiver. Be VERY careful, there is a very small spring in the top/rear of the hop up that applies tension to the hop up arm. It will fly out if you aren't careful. Work in a very clean, small space if possible to keep the spring visible in
  10. *American Football Referee Voice, with stadium echo* Upon further review, the Buffer Tube is Metal. Oops. Haven't had a chance to sit down and do a thorough range test. From my observations, however, standing offhand 160 foot torso-sized targets are in range. See above. Hop up is very good. Keep the rubber clean. When it gets fouled, the vertical dispersion becomes affected as the hop up rubber isn't able to provide consistent spin. Side to side, there's not much dispersion.
  11. Ummmm...in the foreword I said 'mid-four figures' when describing the cost of an SP16. That's obviously WAYYYY incorrect. I intended to imply a pricetag of roughly 1500 USD including gun, rig and upgrades. Toldja guys I was going crosseyed proofreading it.
  12. Thank you for the compliments. I appreciate it. Good knowledge also with the buffer tube. Tumerboy already asked me if he could put a full stock receiver extension on one to add a full stock, so I'd be willing to bet that the HK guys are working on one. I was also very nervous about the G&P front end kit. So much so that I attempted to cancel the order before it shipped and wait for another guinea pig to try the sets out and report on the quality. Redwolf being Redwolf, however, they efficiently shipped out my package before the 'Enquiry' could be processed and the order stopped.
  13. double post. sorry bout that.
  14. One thing I'd like to add is the disassembly/reassembly process for the outer barrel. I'll work on that in the next little bit.
  15. Thanks gents. As for a primary, not yet. I'm sticking with the tried and true - my PTW still has yet to fail, my M14 is amazingly accurate, an Asahi M60 for support duty and a CA SA58 that's a friggin laser, although it's not quite skirmish proven (feeding issues). I love the potential, but until I'm really comfortable with it, it'll likely be a parking area and workbench gun for awhile: Show it off, shoot it a bit, put it back. Shoot it at the bench, see how reliable it is, etc. I don't like to field something that might fail at any time or that I don't trust. Done that too man
  16. Heck, the forward assist even works. That's a first for me. Usually the FA button is just that, a button. ICS's FA decompresses the spring, but this thing shoves the bolt forward. Pardon the blurriness, these were the best of the 6 or so photos I took of the assembly in the 'at rest' and 'forward' positions. You'll get the idea: I experienced a bit of trouble with the bolt stop on my M4. Namely, the reinforced steel part that is designed to absorb the impact of the bolt carrier slamming forward dislodged itself from the bolt stop lever. I noticed this only after many rou
  17. I replaced the front end with a G&P RIS M4 length front end kit. The G&P barrel nut is real steel spec, unlike the stock WA part. Pictured below is the stock WA RIS, end cap and front sight/gas tube below the G&P M4-length RIS front end kit. G&P kit at top, WA stock parts below: G&P Kit Photos: With kit installed: Notes: Flash hider on both stock outer barrel and G&P outer barrel are 14mm+ threaded. Front sight post is made to the AEG part specification, not the real steel dimension. This means that t
  18. Enter the Western Arms M4 CQB-R Now then, we turn our attention to the topic of this review – Western Arms’ highly anticipated release of the ‘next big thing’ in airsoft – a gas blowback carbine. Months of speculation on the efficiency of the gas-in-magazine system that Western Arms selected as the power source was over and guns began shipping in mid-April, 2008. Expensive magazines, plastic bodies, plastic front sight?! This will stink on ice! It’ll be a wall-hanger, it’ll be inaccurate, it’ll break, it’ll suck, magazine cooldown will kill the gun’s value as a skirmish piece! Despi
  19. Western Arms M4 CQB-R Review by Wupjak Foreword Gas Blowback Carbine. Those three words have been like smoke through airsofters fingers for quite awhile now. Until very recently, the options for a GBB carbine were limited to the Sun Projects route an externally powered, gas blowback M16A1 carbine. While this platform uses take AEG magazines, many players have rejected these guns because of several factors, chiefly surrounding performance. While the SP16s offer the blowback action, snappy recoil and sharp report of a gas gun, they can be cantankerous and sometimes impossible
  20. Ordered one in OD BTW I have a 4.0, not 3.0 jacket. Hopefully it'll come with no hood.
  21. Looks about right. I have the v 3.0 Stealth Jacket. IF that's a replica, they have the packaging and so on down to the gnat's *albartroth*. The label on the baggie in which the jacket arrived is exactly like that found on the genuine article.
  22. that absolutely sucks, dude.
  23. I use propane. Green Gas = propane plus a bit of silicone oil. It's very skirmishable, but it's not a BB hose. Fortunately for me, our field is semi only except for Squad Autos. In that context, it's a fine choice. I realize that's not the case everywhere, so your mileage may vary.
