RIS or RAS

Many thanks again, i can't find a king arms FF RAS like the one above anywhere at all, not even on the website, all i can find is a 7" version with a dead straight barrel.

Question, are G&P m4 barrels one or two piece?

And if i do need a one piece outer barrel which one of these would you recommend? Steel or aluminium

Many thanks,

Lots of iffy info so here's the lowdown.

The RIS is Knight's Armaments first incarnation or 'Version 1', you could say, rail product and is held captive by the front 'End Cap' and the 'Delta Ring'. Internal protrusions lock into the star teeth of the 'Barrel Nut' and prevent it rotating.

ICS and Marui make these but they are not accurate since neither manufacturer utilises star type, real steel esque Barrel Nuts like other makers.

The RAS is Knight's second incarnation which improves on the RIS with a 'Claw Clamp' mounted into the inside, rear upper of the RAS unit. This claw(tightened from the outside, upper rear via an Allen bolt) clamps onto the inside surface of the 'Barrel Nut' holding the whole unit far more rigidly than a RIS.

CA, G&P, Guarder and Hurricane make these.

The RAS II is essentially the same as the RAS except for the extension that comes off the top rear of the unit and attaches to the upper receiver rail for greater integrity. It is also free float compatible.

G&P make these.

Finally you have the RAS free float systems. These do not use the original AR 'Barrel Nut' or 'Delta Ring' but instead have large 'Barrel Nut' with a thread on the inside. The inside thread is for the upper receiver and for retaining the barrel in the usual manner.

The 'Delta Ring', in this case, is a cup like nut, with an internal thread which is placed on the receiver thread prior to the 'Barrel Nut' being screwed down. It is then screwed down tight onto the external RAS thread once the RAS has been dropped into place and alligned properly.

G&P, G&G, VFC and King Arms make these.

It should also be noted that manufacturers havn't a clue what they are talking about and often call a RAS a RIS and vice versa. See CA and Hurrincane etc.

Well done, sir!

Respectfully,

PS There is a plethora of free-floating handguard rail systems on the market for "real" AR-15-type rifles. The Airsoft mfrs appear to have chosen to replicate only the Knight products, presumably because the Knights are commonly in use as a standard fitment on US M4 (and some M16) rifles.

Those that come with a G&P RAS FF are two piece.

Just to back track for a moment, what make of M4(?) do you have and from what you've said I take it you want to retain the original barrel and obviously the foresight?

I have a G&P m4 on order at the mo and yes you're right there mate, i would like to get a FF RAS like in the picture which can retain the standard foresight.

The only reason i thought about barrels is that Stealthbomber suggested getting a one piece barrel, and sadly as i don't have the rifle yet i can't check to see.

The G&P M4 comes, as standard, with a solid, one piece outer barrel so no need to change that. All you need to do is add the RAS FF.

My personal preference, if your slinging it, is to go for just a single point sling i.e. a sling plate replacement between the buffer/stock tube and the receiver.

The G&P RAS was, I think, identical to the one in your first post. I think I ordered it from Redwolf a few months back.

There wasn't anything wrong with it. The only thing not to like is that the finish is very matt and almost grey rather than black. A lot of metal stuff produced by G&P seems to be finished like this in my experience.

Anyway, it was a cracking item and the only reason I swapped it for the SIR was that I'd just bought an M14 EBR and I kind of like the way the EBR is sort of spindly at the back and then working up to a huge squared-off lump at the front. Sort of like a sliding-stock attached to a breeze block!

Anyway, as I say, I decided I like the way that looks and I wanted something that would give my M4 a similar appearance so the RAS got swapped for a SIR.

I seem to recall that the RAS was about $100 from RW whereas the DBoys SIR and ACM outer barrel were about $50 altogether.

DBoys accessories are great IMO. Just a shame they don't seem to be able to build decent complete guns.

Cheers for the info.

After checking the G&P and King Arms websites it appears you cant buy just the RAS on its own. You can either get RAS with the commando length barrel (which thinking about it should be removable therefore i can have the option of two barrel lengths, just expensive tho) or you can get a RAS with a m4 length barrel included.

As long as the barrel as shown on my 1st post is removable that seems like a good option, i can then swap over barrels for CQB/woodland etc.

EDIT - it seems the barrels are changable so i think i shall be getting this http://www.fire-support.co.uk/store/comers...?idProduct=1626

Its got a supressor as well so thats a plus.

Just to confirm though ^ that is a free float right?

Your going to need one of these. It's the peg spanner to allow you to tighten a conventional Barrel nut or a Free Float barrel nut. This one is a Classic Army but various other companies make more elaborate versions e.g. Guarder.

Better to have the proper tool than mash and scuff up the Barrel Nut with a pipe spanner etc.
